i remember watching it live with my dad in israel, it was the first time i've witnessed anything like that.
when sharp's shot went in you could hear screams from every apartment in the entire street.
perhaps one of the stronger childhood memories i have.

Thank you guys for that awesome video , this was a "where you were when it happened" moment in israel , that Zalgiris team was great and were kind of a kryptonite of Maccabi ,the size and rebounding of Sabonis and Beard together in the Frontline were hard to deal with.
I also remember Feeling bad for Sabonis , Such a Great player and a class act trying to bring his home club Zalgiris to a final four .

  • @MoranMTA
    @MoranMTA Před 3 měsíci +6

Definitely one of the best days of my life. I have witnesses to the moment when Sabonis made his 5th foul, I was saying to my friends standing around me at the stadium that we're going to win the game. People were crying, and prying, and yes someone offered his F4 tickets for half the price (I should have bought it🤣), but I was CERTAIN at this point that Maccabi will be in the F4. The atmosphere was incredible... and I got to live a real miracle😁
A great video! The Lithuanian point of view is really interesting and your comments are great!
Thanks for letting me relive these incredible memories!

I don't think we've ever had a more important minute in Euroleague history.
In Maccabi, it was clear that if the team didn't reach the Final Four in Tel-Aviv, they were headed for a rebuild.
If that minute had been normal: Zalgiris would've gone to the Final Four in 2004, Maccabi would've been mediocre in 2005, and either Baskonia or Panathinaikos would have won the title. The 2006 run to the final wouldn't have happened either.
But instead, in one minute, a bunch of very low probability events happened. Maccabi made it to the final four, won the final by a 44-point margin, started a dynasty, and built a team that became a fan favorite among many hardcore basketball fans.

I know it's also a heartbreaking game for Lithuanians but maybe you can do Eurobasket final 1995?
The three point showdown between Saša Đorđević and Šarunas Marčiulionis was amazing, and it was an amazing game historically for all the three medal winners of that tournament

Small fact about Dordzevic and Basketnews relating to that game.

I remember this game, because of the hosting of the Final Four in Tel Aviv and because Maccabi had great players and the expectations were to reach the Final Four. You could understand how much Zalgiris played at a high level, exhausted Maccabi and added more points and the dream seems finished. Sabonis was the best in this game, like a coach in the game he gave instructions and everything seemed finished. One of the moments I remember is when Zalgiris advanced to the Final Four in 2018 against Olympiacos. The camera was on Charas with focus, he was the coach, you could see the excitement on his face like a circle closing, and I really wanted to see him win this year with the team. He is one of the greatest in Europe, as a player and as a coach.

We call that game in israel the zalgiris miracle. It was the gam that the tone for maccabi as THE TEAM in the mid 2000's. Since then the most iconic moments from modern maccabi was 2014 playoffs & final four, with an underdog championship ran by tyrese rice. Since then maccabi got into a loop of impatient decisions with plenty of rebuild, and mediocre basketball, although they vegan showing mor consistency in roster and executive calls

I'm happy to hear how this game and this Maccabi team touched you as well.
As someone who lives in Tel-Aviv and was in my early 20s when this game happened, it is indeed a miracle and a legendary game. Its always great to watch this game :)
The commentator in the arena that you guys liked is named Raphi Ginat. He was a very big and known journalist in Israel, late in his carreer he was the editor of the biggest newspaper in Israel. He was always a huge maccabi fan and had a recognizable voices thats why they loved him as arena commentator and he continued to do this until his mid 60s. Later he was replaced by another crazy commentator called Shay Sidi, he's the voice of Maccabi both in Basketball and Football.
About Shelef, he passed a similar pass to Parker in Moscow when Maccabi beat CSKA in the last second in a similar scenerio shot. So he is good in those quarterback passes :)

Later I understood whose mistake really cost us the F4.

Guys, it's been so many years... it's time to start saying Beard's last name properly, unlike the boomer commentators of Lithuania back in the day? :D I know it was mispronounced back then, but it was Lithuania 20 years ago. Almost every foreigners last name was being mispronounced.
Tiesiogine to žodžio prasme "beard"(bierd)- barzda. Paklausykit ir kai pats jis sako savo pavardę ir Brandon Davies buvo Lietuvoje paklaustas apie "berd" ir jis paklausė "Oh, Beard(bierd)?*nusišypso* Yeah, I worked with Beard back in the day, he talked about his time in Lithuania" ir t.t...
