    Having the trifecta of Harry Potter, Twilight, and Hunger Games happening at the same time is astonishing. We will never see a phenomenon like that again. Like what a time to be a teen in a YA fandom.

      i think it'd be a good thing if there was never a series like Twilight that gets popular again. I was so disappointed back in high school when that of all the YA fiction in the world was the one to get popular, when there was so many better written books going ignored while girls were obsessing over the cardboard cutout characters, and toxic messages of twilight.

    When i was a young teen i couldn't really appreciate what Hunger Games was doing. The comparison between it and Twilight also really bring it down when it comes to the "love triangle". The Hunger Games was never meant to be a love triangle (imo). but going into it as a teen thats what i expected and was let down.
    Now , upon reread, i can really enjoy and appreciate The Hunger Games story as a whole

    The reason The Games as a section starts prior to The Hunger Games themselves, and directly after Peeta's reveal, is because the games actually started when the tributes were selected and when they explain Peeta's move to Katniss is when she realizes she's already in the games.

  • @uprisingsun9105
    @uprisingsun9105 Před 2 měsíci +45

    No hate to the creator, but here are a couple mistakes I caught in case you noticed and were doubting your memory or confused.
    21:50 Daisies are also edible, but the book actually refers to dandelions, which are weeds and therefore more prevalent and earlier blooming.
    24:41 Haymitch is the mentor to the tributes, which means he trains them mentally and strategically for the Games. He gives them advice and guidance. A sponsor would be someone who sends him money to use to send gifts to the tributes while they are in the arena.
    52:26 While Katniss is indeed shorter and less muscular than the careers, it's not the only reason they can't follow her. She's spent her life climbing trees and is much better at choosing good branches, rather than *any* branches and is also much less clumsy about it due to practice. This allows her to climb into branches even she admits wouldn't typically make for safe climbing.
    1:15:15 It's the boy from 1, not the boy from 10, but she catches this

  • @minkevanderheide2572
    @minkevanderheide2572 Před 4 měsíci +34

    Actually, the climbing thing is very much true! Climbers prefer to be slender to be flexible, and the way we use our muscles isn't how careers would have trained theirs! I myself am also very skinny but have long limbs, which are good conditions

    36:33 I think she started part 2 of the Games there. Because that’s when the playing actually started. More specifically playing (and manipulating) the people in the Capitol. Even if Peeta was truthful in his confession of love for Katniss, that’s when he started playing the bigger game behind the Hunger Games. Getting people to root for both him and Katniss.

    in my personal opinion the end of YA as a genre/popular can be tied to the adultification of teenagers in general but also the trend thats been arising in general of not putting thought or care into the growth of children or the content they consume. i think there was a time period in the early 2000s where consumerism hadnt quite hit the broader book world and so care was still being put into the most consumed books, i think that period is also over. i think the 'fast fashion of books' that can be observed right now specifically in general romance/ romantasy is emblematic of that as well. i think generally the content that is being created right now and industries that produce content are focused so intensly on mediocrity- content that sells- that the idea that teenagers- or anybody - deserves good media, deserves things that are more than mediocre has gone mostly extinct. but i also think that this is a trend that will swing back around. we're already seeing a large number of people discussing the toxicity and consumerism that is controlling most content creation nowadays, so i expect public opinion to turn soon.

    I think Suzanne Collins starts "The Games" right after Peeta drops the "Love" bomb on the Capitol audience, because from that very moment on: Whether Katniss wanted to or not, she had already started playing the games.
    Prior to that, she wasn't thrilled on impressing the audience, didn't really care about showing off in training, she didn't even shoot the apple in the hog's mouth because she was showing off- She did that because they were disrespecting her time & they were wasting her effort when she was meant to be giving her all in that part of the training.
    The games for all the other tributes started on the very moment they were parading, they had started to try and rob each other of possible sponsors but not for Katniss, to her the games are to start when they're placed into the Arena. But when Peeta plays the crowd in his interview segment, Katniss has inadvertently started playing the game earlier than she had expected to.
    Edit: Nvm, she got it XD

    I read the Underland Chronicles books when I was like in 4th or 5th grade and you were spot on as to how they were made for slightly younger kids than Hunger Games was. I absolutely loved the Underland Chronicles when I read them and I can probably say it was the first book series that got me into reading as a kid and shaped my literature taste to this day. I remember being in shock when I found out Hunger Games was by the same author and was like no wonder I liked both series so much. I think limited world building is somewhat part of the point. Katniss has a restricted world view, and thats part of the capitol's method. Divide and conquer. Separate them, make them *feel* disconnected from each other. Thats why the connection between Rue and Katniss, 11 and 12. She's also sixteen and learning. So I do agree that limited world building is a good choice.
    Also, the hunger games has been a symbolic part of multiple protests and rebellions. Thats INSANE impact and more than any other novel I've heard of, let alone YA novel.

    There are few things I wish the movies had done that upset me to this day. The big one is peeta's leg. It was such a bug thing and it would've been SO easy to implement. But also, I really wish for Rue they would have done the flowers more book accurate. The book describes katniss weaving a blanket of sorts and i believe she puts them in her hair as well, so that the flowers go with her. I just thought that for such and important scene they were pretty skimpy on it in the movie.

    coming from a guy that regularly climbs at indoor climbing gyms, being big and muscular literally means NOTHING when it comes to climbing. A nimble skinny little boy can easily climb higher than a big muscular person.
    I don’t think the books really mention her as a climber, so I’m not sure if she really had any experience or the technique that comes with climbing, but muscles ≠ climbing ability.

    I started this video last week and it took me until you talking about Gale and Katniss running away together for me to pause and reread the entire series and the newest book.
    I remember as a teenager, and especially now, really appreciating that this story wasn’t contingent on the love triangle. Any time Gale or Peeta laid on the guilt or inundated Katniss with expectations, I was so agitated. She’s going through so much, constantly, that it makes sense romance would be the last thing on her mind.
    One line that always really stuck out to me was in the third book when Gale and Peeta are taking a brief respite from war. They’ve lost some extremely important comrades, and they’re talking about who Katniss will choose when this is all over???? Gale says “she’ll pick whoever she can’t survive without.” And Katniss thinks to herself “I can survive just fine without either of them.”
    I do remember being strongly team Gale when I was a teenager, but now, I can hardly stand him. It could only ever be Peeta. Also??? This series was so traumatizing. I was in absolute shambles through Mockingjay and even though it ended on a nice little scene, the whole thing is so incredibly sad and broken. Anyway! I’m so excited to continue this series with you!

    I think the reason that the announcer is called Ceasar isn't because of literally stabbing someone in the back. It's a fitting name when you think of the two most famous emperors that had that name: Julius and Augustus.
    They were very focused on their own image and making themselves look good. So in that sense, it's fitting that the one doing interviews with these children is very focused on making the interviews look as good as possible. As entertaining as possible.
    And the fact that he is the announcer for all the parts of these games is fitting too. Once again for making these children look as good before they enter the arena. But also for managing their popularity in a way. Nobody is allowed to outshine or rebel against the ruler.
    Augustus was very clear about rebellion. The moment one of his generals seemed to outshine him, he sent him a dagger to kill himself with.
    Ceasar, in his interviews, tries to play nice and bubbly with the tributes. But the moment these tributes show any resentment or protest for the games, his walls go back up.
    Joanna telling the audience to f-bomb themselves is met with a disgusted look from Ceasar and a "well then, one women's opinion". As if to say "well, this one is a prick".
    He can charm you up with his charismatic behavior. But he can also figuratively backstab you by making you look bad if you don't play nice. I feel like that is why he is called Ceasar

    1:10:30 also the mocking jay pin was never mentioned but that’s really important because that symbol becomes associated with katniss and later the rebellion. And it becomes important to the plot in the second book that while the mockingjay in the districts meant rebellion, in the capital it became a fashion trend. The reason the mockingjay is so important as a spit in the face to the capital is because they weren’t supposed to be possible and the jabberjay was already a symbol of failure because how they were used by the rebellion. All jabberjays were male so they couldn’t reproduce, after the project failed they were all released to slowly die off, however the all male species was able to mate with female mockingbirds. So a symbol of failure on the part of the capital became compounded when mockingjays were accidentally made and couldn’t be eradicated.
    1:39:19 actually Cato had impenetrable body armor, katniss tried to shoot him but her arrow shattered. Cato then grabs peeta and katniss shoots Cato in the hand while peeta pushes back and Cato falls off. But again because of the body armor they couldn’t kill him until katniss shoots him in the head which wasn’t protected.

    Quick note, you say a few times that Katniss and Peeta are trauma-bonded, and a lot of people seem to get this term wrong. Trauma bonding is actually a psychological process where a *victim* creates an emotional bond with an *abuser* or similar person. Since that's not really something that was going on with those two, you might wanna try to find another way to word the point you're trying to get across :)

    • @arbyswitch5580
      @arbyswitch5580 Před 2 dny

      i mean, in terms of trauma bonding its not the victim attempting to create an emotional bond with an abuser, its the other way around and there's a very specific tactic involved. that being said, i really appreciate you mentioning this and calling it out because good lord do so many people misuse the term "trauma bonding" in this day and age

    As far as the part naming goes, it could be that that stuff is included in “The Games” because it’s when Peeta starts playing the Capitol’s game. He’s using the interview as a way to make him and Katniss interesting and get Capitol citizens to want to see more of them, so really, this is when the games actually start for them. Just my take though. (Editing later: looks like this isn’t a very unusual take lmao)

  • @maddie8728
    @maddie8728 Před 23 dny

    i think "the games" section starting immediately after peeta's confession could be a choice to draw the line in the metaphorical sense as to where the "games" really began for katniss and peeta. the star crossed lovers angle that they spin in order to win specifically begins here in peeta's interview. it could be that collins is referring to the beginning of the games (for peeta and later, katniss), which we know never really end for them once they leave the arena because of the façade they have to keep with that peeta originated within his interview.

    When the narrative about the books focus too much on the love triangle, the author is actually pointing a mirror to the audience/reader. We distance ourselves from the people of the capitol thinking we would not watch these games as a entretaiment event, that its sick how they are forcing two children to have intimacy so they can be entretained by a love story. Isn't it a mirror reflecting back at us? Showing that we might be as oblivious to human suffering as the regular Citizen of the capitol is? Isn't Panam a reflection on how our current society lives in a world scale? How our conforts on 1st world countries are obtained by the suffering of 3rd world countries, for example? But we don't think twice about the trade off. We are not the cause of the problem, but could be part of the solution, but we are entretained, so we don't think about it too much. My point is, we are the Capitol.

    Edit: oop, spoke too soon
    Saw someone else say it but "the games" section starts after peeta's confession because thats when Katniss starts to get into the psychology of playing and being played. You left out a pretty big part there, that is her assuming he's trying to undermine her and lose sponsors for her. To basically use her to bolster himself to her detriment. Obviously thats not true, but this point is where Katniss realizes she is and starts acting like a contestant. Its where the games start *for her*.

    Not sure if it’s said but I believe the reason ‘the games’ starts there is cause the mental aspect of the games truly start there. Like the games started with the interviews because it’s all for sponsors. And that’s kinda when Katniss understands that’s the games have already started. At least that’s my interpretation

    Ok I kinda agree about the planed ending and how it gets bad when you go past it. Example Star Wars. I know some don’t like the prequel trilogy but it hands down better then the new Disney one. Why because they went back in time and didn’t mess with the original ending.

    Loved this analysis, but your audio is way quieter than the sounds you add during editing. I had to turn the volume way up to hear you during the arena portion, but then things like the arms of the angels sound was way too loud. I haven't seen the rest of the series, so idk if you fixed this, but if not, it might be worth adjusting your volume peaks so everything is in a similar range

    I really enjoyed your analysis of The Hunger Games. It’s been about half a year since the video was posted so I don’t know if you will read this, but if you do I just have one thing I would like to point out to you. The plural of the word “series” is the same as the singular. It is not “serieses’. I’m not telling you this with the intention of being a jerk, as it is a very small thing; but when I get things wrong I do like to be told, and I’m hoping you feel the same.

      this is kinda out of left field but have you been diagnosed with or suspect you may have autism spectrum disorder? i'm just asking because i noticed the people around me (who are generally pretty neurotypical) don't really share that opinion (about telling people about small mistakes because you'd want them to tell you) but i also haven't socialized enough (common homeschool kid L) to know if i have a good data pool haha. basically, i wanna know if this is one of those things i should keep to myself or if normal people (presumably you, youtube commenter) also have that viewpoint

    • @karenlp5867
      @karenlp5867 Před 19 dny +2

      @@toby1004 Wow. You are spot on Toby. Yes, I am autistic. I can’t stand it when I get things wrong and no one tells me. Even if it’s only very small things that shouldn’t really matter. I’ve found that there are some neurotypical people who like to be told when they get things wrong, but a lot don’t. So it probably is best to keep those things to yourself if you can. For me, even though I know it would be better not to say anything, I can’t help it. I NEED to let people know when they are wrong. It’s something that I haven’t found a way to overcome.

      I think Divergent truly killed the genre off in the broader cultural conscience, at least for a while. I was just aging out of the YA demographic when it came out and I remember feeling so disappointed by the end of the first book. I never even read the rest of the series. If a better series had been the next big thing, I genuinely believe the YA boom would have continued.

    • @hockeygrrlmuse
      @hockeygrrlmuse Před 5 měsíci +2

      It says a lot that so many of us were originally Gale stans but now with the series long over and with more life experience we have changed our minds. I don't know what it says exactly but I know it says a lot of it

    • @hockeygrrlmuse
      @hockeygrrlmuse Před 5 měsíci +2

      Katniss thinking of Gale a lot doesn't bother me too much as I think she does need to explore and resolve her feelings for him. Her relationship with Peeta is something she has to grow into, and part of that is her truly considering what Gale would be like as a romantic partner before she can fully choose to be with Peeta.

    I thought you analysis was insightful. However series is already plural so I think you are mispronouncing the word. I love the Hunger Games too but I could not get into Twilight until Cedric Diggerory played Edward Cullen. I disagree that the triangle was not there, I was Team Gal from the beginning while Peeta was nice and kind and literally save her life with the bread, I just not a fan. Ultimately your discussion immensely thoughtful.

    I'm so happy to have stumbled across these videos! I read them in high school right before seeing the first movie (because my English teacher mentioned it when we were studied dystopian novels), and I've finally decided to reread them as an adult with a master's degree in English lit. I'm loving getting the chance to hear someone else's analytic thoughts about the books!
