I always love it when I'm in the mood to watch this one because I always walk away feeling satisfied. I'm not sure, but I wonder if Ron Cobb worked on the set design for this film as well.

He was indeed inspired by Heavy Metal. Specifically by one artist in it: Moebius. The whole set design is pretty much from his "Incal" comic series. (actually Moebius himself worked on the movie as well).
Moebius (aka Girauld) also worked on Alien - he designed the spacesuits - and on Tron. He did a highly praised Silver Surfer album for Marvel and in the documentary about him ("Moebius Redux" - you can find it here on youtube) you'll hear Stan Lee load the highest praise upon his art.

That's pretty impressive, given that the woman who plays the Diva, Maiwenn Le Besco, and the woman who sang the song, Inva Mula-Tchako, are two totally different people. Even more impressive since the last part of the song was digitally strung together. It was thought that no human could sing those notes fluidly in such quick succession, so they had Inva sing the individual notes and then they were mixed for the song.
Not sure who told you this story, but the only performance they were hearing was the playback of the digital mix and the actress acting the song out. I imagine it's hard to disguise lip-syncing on a film set.

In terms of commercial, entertaining films, I think there's not much films better than this. A amazing film.
Fun fact: while in preproduction, Luc Besson had a year where he had some free time, so, insted of just take some vacations, he used those few months so write, shoot amd edit a much smaller movie, a more simple film, without big productions, big effects, and big budgets. The result was Leon - the Professional, one of the great masterpieces of movie history.

I so love this movie, great reaction you two. Funny bit of trivia, the costume designers who made the clothing told the Director Chris hated the first outfit he was first shown. So they were told by the Director to make ones that were seriously crazy, and when he said hell no, they could whip out these as less drastic outfits as a compromise. He then agreed to wear them which is what we ended up seeing. lol

And another funny little thing: none other than the fashion designer Jean-Paul Gaultier designed the around 300 film costumes himself and many professional Fashion Week models were hired as supporting actors for this film - a fact that of course also characterizes the style of this production and thus achieved cult status for many fans of the genre

  • @renzero9206

This films a masterclass in visual style. You have costumes designed by Jean-Paul Gaultier worn by supermodels (Mila Jovovich, who plays Leeloo, was at one time, the highest paid model in the world) and the set design was by legendary artists Jean Giraud (more famously known as Moebius) and Jean-Claude Mézières (another legendary artist who is famous for the graphic novel series Valérian and Laureline). Luc Besson, the director of Fifth Element, would go on to write and direct a Valarian film 20 years later.
This film was and is amazing to this day for those to aspect alone, and Chris Tucker's outstanding performance 😂
Originally, Luc Besson wanted Prince to play the role, but they couldn't get him. Tucker has also said he wanted to play the role differently, but was so happy that they told him to play it as they wanted. It remains one of his most favorite roles.

One of the craziest Sci Fi Action Adventure films ever made!
This movie is James Bond meets DIE HARD meets Star Wars meets Metropolis meets Indiana Jones meets Lawrence Of Arabia meets STARGATE!
Before Chris Tucker was cast as Ruby Rhod, David Bowie, Michael Jackson and Prince were considered for the role, but they all tuned it down as they feared that none would get a bigger paycheck. Even Jamie Foxx was considered for the part, but turned it down, as Foxx thought he was too buff to play th role.
Tucker's persona was based on all three of the late great artists.

This movie is very divisive in the US. Most people love it or think it’s dumb. I’ve always thought this was because the director is French and he brings a very different style of humor to what US sci-fi/action movies are like. I’m curious to see whether you two have a different perspective.
