  • After being told the engine was blown due to a timing chain failure we acquired this 2013 LR4 5.0L HSE LUX for $1,000 from a family member and rolled the dice to see if we could fix the issue with new timing chains or by other means other than engine rebuild or replacement. I recognize that I will probably get tons of laughs and comments but the prior ownership experience from our family member for 200k of the 240k miles on this car prove it was pretty good vehicle.
Based on our research and experience of repairs and deferred maintenance I strongly believe the Achilles heel of this engine is almost always 1) the timing chains (three total plus tensioners and spacers) AND/OR 2) the fuel system (one low pressure and two high pressure pumps) none of which are that complicated to fix. Most of the fuel system components could easily be done with limited tools and for under $1,500. I would however not recommend trying the timing chains without the help of a professional. This is not financial advice but after wrenching myself for nearly two dozen years I felt like it was probably worth the $3,500-$4,000 you could just pay someone else to replace. The key is that most folks do not do this preventatively until they experience breakage or severe slack/slapping.
I will post other videos in the future but with the exception of 8 NGK Spark Plugs purchased locally, all other parts were ordered through www.rockauto.com/. I will post a full parts list in a future video once I have time to combed through the invoices but by far I would recommend buying fuel injectors here compared to anywhere else.
