  • HOW TO TEST FRIDGE THERMOSTAT
    ► Multimeter: amzn.to/2BBXlsp
    ► Alligator Clips: amzn.to/2MvfZHk
    The fridge in our shop quit working the other day while we were taking an engine apart. We decided to try to diagnose it and see what causes that. Some of you will say it is not a car related video but we will dedicate this video to all of you that have fridge in their garage.
    We tested the thermostat and it did not work at all. This was causing our fridge not to work at all. The thermostats are usually super simple to replace. It takes only a few minutes. We shared with you the test procedure. Hopefully this video will help some of you.

    But this test doesn't test the actual function of a thermostat. You are just checking if it works as a switch but you have to check if it works on temperature also

    Let me tell you I've been all over google & youtube and I was pretty convinced my relay capacitor or compressor was broken since they weren't turning on (but the lights were) but I bought a multimeter and confirmed it was actually the THERMOSTAT that was broken. Thank you for this video.

    I always check the Tstat first by testing continuity through the power cord. Most of the times I have had Tstat issues are because it is fried (they're not temp accurate to any degree in the first place). First thing I do is turn on the tstat (any setting other than off) and then hold my probes to the ground prong on the plug (unplugged) and the paddle (pos) prong. If there is continuity, the tstat is sending a signal- if not, that is your problem 99% of the time. No need to test further until you replace the tstat. (*if the tstat is turned off, there will be no continuity at the end of the power cord)

    Thermostat might not be broken. There's a small adjustment screw that can come loose. Reset it and add a little hot glue to hold it.

    Thank you, Auto Repair Guys! My freezer buzzes second month, electricity bill went double. Your video is the first one I think is spot on for my problem. I just wander, could the thermostat be dead because we transported horizontal freezer from one place to another..at one point we had to turn it vertical...yes, you should not..we did. Could we kill it because of that?

    If you put your meter on OHMS instead of just testing for continuity, the resistance should change when you turn the knob.

    What if your thermostat tests OK (and you've also replaced it) but the temperature won't stay consistent? The vents are unblocked, the door seal is good, and the coils are clean.

    What causes a mini fridge to keep running and never stop? I was suspecting a bad thermostat or switch that is controlled by a thermostat. On the left side of the mini fridge, if you are facing it from the front, it gets hot. I have another mini fridge and this doesn't happen and the compressor doesn't run constantly. It does get cold inside after I repaired the leak and added Freon, but I can't get it to reach a certain temperature and then stop until it needs to run again. Could someone tell me what may be going on.

    an open switch means no continuity, IE 'off'. closed means continuity I.E. on, good video otherwise.

    The most common problems with no cooling would be in no particular order a bad defrost timer, bad thermostat, compressor capacitor. This would be besides the obvious of dirt/dust, or less obvious of bad compressor.

  • @CarlAnthonyTV
    @CarlAnthonyTV Před 2 lety

    Ugh.. I just replaced this part and am testing the old one for continuity and it's working fine! Why the fridge was cooling off but most of the time I had to manually twist the temp control to make it do so. But then by itself, it won't turn on to KEEP it cool, which is frosting my balls (pun).

    One doesn't have to be a genius to check the thermostat for the continuity. But what's wrong if the thermostat doesn't switch off and the everything in the fridge gets frozen? I've already turned the thermostat to the minimum, but it's the same. The coils are clean so this also isn't the reason. Dhe door is closing well. So, what's the problem? Do I need a new thermostat?

    • @pvuse6140
      @pvuse6140 Před 4 lety

      He said in the video that means the thermostat is stuck open and you need to replace it

    • @T-Man-T
      @T-Man-T Před 4 lety +1

      If its running closed circuit and its adjusted to its warmest setting then its just worth replacing - I thought I would fix it on a chiller unit on a job and spent hours trying to resolve it but I could only ever get it to work closed circuit all the time or open circuit all the time, they are quite delicate as in the pipe that you insert into your chilled area is full of gas and as it chills the gas produces less pressure causing the contact plate to lose connection thus stopping it chillong and when it warms up it will cause the gas to expand.All these manual thermostats are the same and work off the same principle so are interchangable
