What we need to realize is that making a sim football game, or really any sim sports game, is VERY difficult.
Yeah ea and 2K kinda made that hard for other companies who want to give theirselves a shot.
@@_Nedmac It's not their fault that indie devs lack the experience and knowledge to pull off these titles.
There's a reason why Axis Football is taking a year break.
@@ThreeEyedPeaits not that indie studios lack experience or knowledge. Its all about finances. Indie studios dont have the budget to hire the people to with the necessary experience and knowledge.
Just to clarify here - Varsity is not made by the same team as the old maximum football at all. Old maximum football was created by one developer David Winters. Spear was a publisher, not a developer. Source is me, I’m a developer on Varsity 😁 - just wanted to clear this up!
Red my brother and favorite madden modder, didn’t know you were one of the ones working it. Now I’m super excited can’t wait to see what you guys create 🎉❤🎊💥🍺 cheers Brodie!
Maximum Football will also be on Xbox One and PS4, it was confirmed by the director in a discord call yesterday
same with all the drops at the end of a play. so the game is very broken feeling right now
I think we’ve gotten used to AAA “betas” so getting an actual playtesting beta is a little jarring. I think I had the same experience playing as you did. Very hopeful to see this game grow into a very good game.
Competition is the best way for sports games to improve in many of the areas they've been lacking in recent times. After all, sports in general are supposed to be competitive as teams, coaches and athletes are constantly going toe to toe to be the best. So why can't sports video games do the same?
Well said! Even if a sports game flops, if the competitor steps up their game because of a perceived alternative then surely the gamer is the winner as they're going to get better games. But that's just my take.
Because in America, the name of the game is Capitalism, not Law or Morality, so ultimately, both of those things can be bought. Including the License for the entire franchise of the NFL. Which it has been. Which is why the needle won't turn.
Like we’ve been saying has a ton of potential. Now that we have have it, they definitely need to tweak it to make it playable. I think ncaa 14 has better gameplay than this. In which that game is very outdated. Ton of potential, needs updates.
U think? NCAA 14 has far, far better gameplay compared to this in its current state lmao
The gameplay isn’t going to get much better, if it gets better at all. The underlying code that’s running this game is the same as the terrible originals. The same problems that were happening in those are happening in the new one. The new one definitely looks prettier and has better animations, but it will never be a “good” game because of how flawed the code is.
@@virkon6494 right that definitely was an insult. I don't see how people are hyping this up. PS2 NCAAs look and play better than this 😂
With College Football 25 not coming to PC, I don’t think this game is destined to fail. Well as long as they continue to polish it.
@@youngtrill9745 well yeah it’s not out yet. Of course no on is playing the game.
@youngtrill9745 I'd honestly play it because I can't get a new xbox model and the new ea games are only on xbox series x
@@youngtrill9745I’m on pc so I might get a ncaa mod for it since I can’t play ncaa 25
i just need 2k8 with a reskin
I want a APF 2k sequel. They blew it by not making another game stacked with more game modes, deep customization and more legends. 2k8 failed because it was bare bones.
It looks like it has potential. Just needs polish and a brand behind it like the UFL. That could actually work since they’re upcoming too.
What a great take. Of course the UFL licence wouldn't be cheap, or maybe, if they consider the move mutually beneficiary.
@@loicduchesne6891 It would be a smart move but UFL is working with the NFL I think. I might be wrong
Free to play makes it a no brainer to try it.
Hit the nail on the head. It looks incredible and they have a great foundation to work off of. One thing I loved about gameplay is that user DB movement and play is the closest to reality that we’ve EVER gotten. I’d love to see them bring in some coaches and players to help with the AI and in-game schemes (or to add a create-a-play). If they stick with this it’ll be an absolute market changer a year or two down the line 🔥
If 2k was smart they’d invest some developers into these projects and make an all pro football 2.0
Playing the beta for just a couple games, I was very impressed. A lot of your criticisms are valid (juking/spinning don't work, scrambling is too easy, holes in the line don't open, etc). But I gotta say, I enjoyed the gameplay more than I've enjoyed any Madden the last...decade?
It needs a lot of work, but as long as it has a franchise mode (which it will) and gameplay updates (which it hopefully will), I'll play Maximum over Madden any day of the week.
Hopefully I'll see some of you on the servers!
UE5 clearly holds its own in giving the look of a good sim football game. If the devs can just figure out the gameplay and physics, this game could go far.
I agree completely. Plus the team customization options and deep dynasty mode will hold people's attention.
I DO have a positive I want to add here. It's a small detail that was not talked about in the video. But I noticed it, and it made me smile : the camera flashes from the stands. It was SO cool to see that added in for an extra layer of emersion. And a reminder of era gone by that I long for to come back : cameras flashing at live sporting events from the stands. Makes the event feel so much bigger and makes it feel more important. Maximum Games? I say thank you for that small detail.
Now if you excuse me, I have a game to install and test myself.
It's weird seeing maximum football, Axis football from being a flash game to 3D game and all these indy games. I remember when gridiron champion creators scammed everyone crazy times we came from.
Also them Gameloft games back then they was on a generation run 🔥
I was waiting for your video on this!
All-Pro Football 2K8 & Backbreaker were my favorite football games ever back in the day!😊👍🏻
Im not going to lie playing the beta this game has so much potential if you played all of their past titles
I was not bored! Good job making this game playable
🎉🎉
Watching it doesn’t give it justice you have to play it
The graphics and on field mechanics are the biggest improvements
Replays cutscenes post game stats etc
The UI is great ( my opinion)
And It seems like you can customize your controls big plus 💪🏾 from the options menu
-I had no issue navigating through the routes or play-call screen its simple
The scoreboard looks good in my opinion
But it looks better when playing the game
Pre snap menu and defensive adjustments are good
On field arts looks better than EA not gone lie 🤔
Scoring a touchdown transition is solid
-You can celebrate they have the griddy and a cool backflip ( my go to celebrations)
The movement is fair the kickoffs are weird definitely need a better kicker animation
-Kickers just walk to the ball to kick 😅
Running is stiff but is not a big problem with a player who has speed
-different run animations are needed
-you can cut and juke decently (stick skills do matter)
-the stiff arm and spin is cool you can avoid defenders
If you know how to run the ball
handoffs and reading the holes is an issue
Drop backs need work
Throwing is good not unfair you can place it well
The d-line play is actually pretty good the swim and spin are responsive
the catching is good for this game
With a more physic base approach it could be better
tackling wise the quick hits need to be ironed out for smoother transition
More animations could be used 🤷🏾♂️ in the tackling department
Coverage is ok
In air adjustments decent hold Y to catch
press Y to deflect
Strafe is actually good 👀
Defense you need to be ready or you will get beat easy
But its not impossible tackle tracking seems tuned up
But overall I came in with no expectations and I was surprised
this game could be a solid play and build a bigger fan base in 2 years from this build
Lets go maximum football!
no way, somebody else played the old gameloft nfl games! i think the 2011 iteration was my first ever football game!
@@SOFTDRINKTVstill have 2 of them on an ipad. like ea did with madden, gameloft also ruined their nfl game series. after 2011 you had to pay a ridiculous amount of credits for almost everything. i remember reading somewhere that they made it free, but that was the trade off
@@SOFTDRINKTV the later iterations were pretty bad tho. you had to buy almost everything with in game currency. the earlier ones were fire
@@SOFTDRINKTVI freaking loved the Gameloft NFL Pro games. I still have the NFL Pro 2014 game in my downloads, although it's unplayable, sadly.
IN SOFTDRINK I TRUST🙏🏾
Hell even if this kind of project can't surpass Madden just yet, the fact it's an alternative is a start. All we need is teams/players fully editable and let community go ham!
Love your videos
I've been playing the open beta and remember the old maximum football videos and it does play better than I though it would. They need to remap the ball carrier layout so you don't need three hands to perform some of the moves. They need to work on player response. Especially the ball carriers and defensive linemen. Collision detection needs to be worked on. Like you said the running game is a toss up. I know on one play I just knew I was going to get a good run and I purposely ran towards a receiver blocking a defender so they could be in the way of another free defender trying to ran down my running back. That defender ran through those 2 players like they weren't even there and he tackled my running back. I stopped playing Madden when 2K football came out on the Dreamcast so you can call me a 2K fanboy all you want. I played the first Madden on the Xbox 360 for 2 days turned around and got screwed out of $40 by Gamestop. I really think they're making this free to play so it will cut down on some of the criticism it will surely get. Right as a 2K fan something is almost better than nothing. I refuse to play Madden. Unlike most people I do vote with my pocket.
Finally a review is here
Man I hope those boys in Lubbock are payed well. I can't imagine playing in that heat, wind, and mud-rain.
This game is like playing in quicksand very stiff needs a lot of work to be playable
It’s like playing in quick sand, but in fast forward. Nothing is fluid, but everything moves so fast. Players get sucked into animations they’re nowhere close to. Trying to throw over the middle is like trying to feed ducks. There’s so many bodies in one small area.
Cannot wait for this. Haven't played a console football game since Madden 17
woaaaaaaah this is sounding great... free to play, actually listening to the community cant wait to see where they take it
Thanks for this!
your video is so much better without constant background music . maybe using some for certain segments within the video can help add character but nice work man it is always appreciated
game noise from the game would have been nice in some places instead of music
I dont care what the adhd people think .
The Dougie Floutie name wasn't meant to be a flex, it was clever marketing. The dev were originally looking at Joe Montana for the namesake, seeing as they didn't have a pro license attached to the game. The addition of Canadian rules and total shift to Canadian Football first lead many to believe they were attempting to grab a CFL license, when that also fell threw, they contacted Doug, a CFL legend, to be the namesake for the same reasons they wanted Montana. They were trying to sell as many copies as possible.
The game wasn’t good enough to have any name attached. Any money spent on Doug Flutie’s name should have been spent on making gameplay better. Just my opinion
@@SOFTDRINKTV completely agree, but like me and Javo were talking about in his stream the other day, you'd have to invest millions in order to compete.
Been waiting YEARSSSSS
Good breakdown
been seeing a lot of Football Simulator clips lately, any plans to look at that in the future?
Definitely the same way I felt, the game honestly for what it is right now is in a playable state. It just needs a lot more polish in terms of gameplay fluidity and smoothness. Improving on graphics and visuals (outside of bugs and glitches) should be prioritized second.
But if these guys can focus on building on the criticisms we've given them, I think we'll have a competent and good alternative to Madden for sure.
That anti aliasing ghosting is killing meeeee lol
I participated in both play tests. I was surprised they put it in beta, considering how long it has to go before being playable
Need an "Undisputed boxing" video. Want to know your expectations
This looks legit 🔥
The idea of a high school football sim sounds exciting to me. I loved playing the High School Playoffs in NCAA Campus Legend mode, and a game dedicated to HS ball could be lot of fun if done well.
Man it's gonna be weird because my parents never let me play football irl growing up so I played ncaa and madden
I was honestly impressed in my short time with the game. I was expecting it to be a lot further behind where it is right now. And I wouldn't call what it is right now very good, but I thought it would be nearly to the point of unplayable. You can have some fun on this game already. If they keep working at this, it could be a competitor with EA in the future. Maybe a few years (probably more) off of that, but I do think they have a very solid base here. Hopefully the full release shows some big improvements though, that's the big moment for this game imo.
The best thing this franchise can do is focus on a high school football feel rather than pro
I played the beta and I got to say I was very nervous coming in that it was going to be awful... But it's not Yes the speed of the game in terms of transitions between animations needs work but that's just a smoothing out process This is legitimately a playtest beta This game isn't close to being done it's not even coming out until close to next year. But the gameplay is fun. And it really feels like a football game unlike Madden which feels like a targeting system with a lot of polish. It's hard butv over time you can learn the mechanics and how to make the run game work. Passing is a lot of fun, And I love that they made jumping for the ball a timing mechanic.. You can tell the game's going to have a steep learning curve once you start playing it but if you put in the time to really master the mechanics this game looks like it's going to be a lot of fun and the best part about it being free to play is that it has time to be patched and improve a lot even after launch. And if they make their money then in a few years we might have a real competitor to Madden. I walked away a lot more positive but thankful that the game is not right about to launch.
Maximum football just released a patch for the beta. The game especially running and defense feels a lot better.
Here’s hoping this game turns out amazing. Wish I had a pc to play the beta. Hoping it’s great on console down the road.
Thanks for info
It's about damn time
David winters original vison was a cfl game and no license = maxium football
Thanks! I'll try it on Steam.
This game looks promising for a beta. I really wonder if we’ll ever see an engine that’s ideal for football sims. I hate Frostbite and really am willing to try any and all engines
For clarity, Pyramid Lake was only involved in the some of the dynasty mode development of Maximum Football 19/20 and Spear Interactive was involved in the marketing. The gameplay was entirely done by Canuck Play and we were not involved. The team on Varsity High School Football is not related to Doug Flutie's game in any way.
@@SOFTDRINKTV No not at all. We have our own gameplay developers, etc.
Good to know, will clear that up next time it’s relevant in a video, thanks!
@@SOFTDRINKTV Much appreciated. Max 19/20 gameplay was really the vision and execution of David Winter. We're doing our own thing and really happy with the progress we've made, and what we've begun showing this year.
Sunday Rivals shoutout‼️‼️‼️
I've played it throughout the testing cycle for over a year now and to be nice, it just isn't a very good football game. The glaring problems everybody could see right away were not fixed/patched which means there are significant fundamental issues they can't fix without starting from scratch.
I’ve been saying that the whole time. This game was supposed to fully release almost a year and a half ago. It’s very clear they tried their best to get the janky stuff out of the game, but it’s just not possible given what they started with and how much time they’ve spent on it. If the game was actually in a good state it would’ve released a long time ago
That would be cool if some developers are making a very detailed football game that can compete with Madden
I appreciate that it’s free. I don’t mind at all buying some content later. If Madden was free I would have no problem with it
I would absolutely love a high school football game.
You gotta review College Bowl bro!! I know you did legend bowl but I heard this college bowl game is worth it 👀
Can you throw to the outside shoulder of an X or Z receiver on a fade? Madden hasn’t had this capability in 20 years.
The beta ran like a potato on my pc. It looked like there was a button you have to press to catch every pass but I couldn't tell because I couldn't get the game to run higher than 20 FPS. I don't have the newest PC build but I've never had problems running games on the highest settings.
is there a CPU vs CPU option to watch in broadcast view??
I will say that it was jarring the speed of some animations. And how the 45 degree dive tackle happens quite a bit. But overall some polish and I really like this.
But the ball carrier controls really need a revamp, it feels like im driving a jet ski with a stalled motor.
If possible, can you make a retrospective video of those old mobile football games by gameloft? NFL 2010 was my childhood
Got a lot of hope for Max it has loads of potential
By the way do you plan on checking out college bowl once it releases?
I played only one game and since I'm no american football expert, I wasn't sure if the problem came from my skills or the game when running the ball.
It just felt totally random as you say and since it's not easy in the first place running with the ball (compared to passing, in old madden games for instance) I had absolutely no fun trying that.
there's potential but lots of work left to do.
It’s pretty rough, but I’m sure they’ll improve on in it because it’s difficult to put a product like that.
If the dynasty mode is solid. I’ll play it
i love your perspective and feedback to get this project rolling in the right direction but, what they need to understand is they dint have any timelines so what they should be doing is trying to make the best product, not steps toward being the best , just be the best or competitive otherwise dont even put out a product for that year, no more "steps in the right direction" from any company could be tollerated at this point. do they really need feedback? yes but first step is be better than madden or other top competiters
there is potential here, like you said.....just tweaking of gameplay/buttons and some updates will bode well for this game. just make it full customization and offer some things madden doesn't. any games that will make madden get better, i'm all for it. and varsity sounds interesting since a high school game hasn't been done before. hope that turns out well and i'll be keeping an eye on that one.
Could you make a video on the ea rugby series by chance?
Good shit. I’m on console, so can’t access the beta unfortunately but as soon as it releases I’ll be able supporting! I’m genuinely dying for a quality football game from *anyone* that isn’t the soulless & corrupted used car dealership that is EA Sports.
Bring back the Sarasota Seamen
Wtf why is the throwing motion of the QB in that Varsity game look so much better than the QB throwing motion in Madden? Everything from the footwork to the arm motion looks so much smoother.
Gameloft Nfl pro 2013 mentioned 🗣
We all going to help help i like it
Just curious what's your opinion on Madden mobile? I'd be interested in your response on that
Anyone remember Backbreaker & All-Pro Football?
they should have CFL TEAMS
Exactly what i thought. Would be a good way to get real teams without infringing EAs rights.
But it wouldn't work because people would get angry about playing as cfl teams with nfl rules
Why is this game not as "fluid" in the movement and physics as the 2K8 football video game was that was produced almost 20 years ago? I just compared my 2K8 with this video and 2K8 "out shines" this game for the more fluid movement and physics.
I’m very excited for when this comes out. I’ve been getting hyped for this for the past 3 years. While EA’s College Football 25 will likely be the better game, Maximum Football has the potential to be better overtime. It’s the game with the higher ceiling. I just hope Maximum games has the budget to go the distance.
I currently still play MFB 2.0 despite the bugs with penalties and little glitches. I have a league with a 35-season history and the database has grown a lot. I WISH that this new version of the game would make it so that the old database files would be compatible with this new version. I know that is asking a lot. But it would be nice to be able to migrate the old league into this new version.
Same, I play it when I can, even though it barely chugs along on my Windows 10/11 machines and my Xbox controller only works several times a year. Love the customization, simplicity, and made plenty of high school and NCAA small and large college leagues to play and watch.
@@Daveybird I run it on an old WIndows7 machine that is no longer connected to the internet. Haven't tried the new beta yet. I'll probably have to recreate the same league in new format. Keep my old stats separate, gonna be a chore to recreate teams and existing players. to not lose any continuity.
Game looks good. Does it have an ultimate team mode?
They should add a "SD" graphics filter that downgrades the graphics from HD to SD, to give it a retro look like you are watching a game in the 1980s and 1990s. Then add logo creator options to allow us to create any logo we want.
I want Maximum Football with AFL, XFL, D-II and D-II leagues
This game is DOA, because NCAA. But it's free, so that's a plus. Still needs a ton of work with gameplay, the catch/drop thing is a big problem for me.
If only they would bring in the old blitz the league team logos or partner with the UFL
Hey, You should do a video on the UFC undisputed games and how bad the new games are compared to the old ones
At the end of the day, the biggest draw for any indie/AA football game is that its not Madden. If any of them released that played as well as a AAA game, it would have been the prophecied "madden killer"
I said it years ago when this game was announced, if it didnt beat NCAA25 to the punch it was dead on arrival and its not beating NCAA25 either to release or in gameplay, let alone in hype.
Let’s actually give this one a chance. There’s also a rumor about a high school varsity football game that’s being developed.
i wish they would add ragdoll physics like madden 18 or 16
I like it a little stiff on the running game but feels great
I will give this game the same grace I gave Undisputed. I am on board completely. Now we need a NBA 2k alternative.
They need to partner with backbreaker
Looks decent but they should work on some of the animations especially the players running which kind of looks awkward at times.
I got 19 for like less than $2 and played 3 downs, haven't toughed it since.
I think it’s pretty good i would not pay what i would pay for madden or cfb25 but I would pick this up $1-$30ish…much much much better than axis or any of the previous versions of maximum football
I think a lot of people have unrealistic expectations for football games. I think a lot of people have gone back and played the 2k games and compare everything to those when they should compare a game to itself. This game was never going to play as well as the 2k games or madden for that matter and that’s ok. It just needed to play well and it does. It has a lot of room to improve but honestly playing this game was a breath of fresh air. It’s fun to get away from all the animation based nonsense of madden and just play a game that’s smooth. I think we all should give it its props and not compare it to Madden at all.
Do you guys prefer no background music and just my voice, like in this video here, or do you guys prefer the videos with background music? Just curious.
I think it works, but my preferred thing is very quiet music under your voice since it seems to just make it easier to pay attention to the video to me, not music that's competing with your volume but just there enough to be noticeable.
It's also on PS4 as I get emails from my PS4 on each update on Maximum football
The background music is soothing, calming, and inviting. It fits your style of presentation. Wholesome to say the least
i still prefer background music in retrospectives, documentaries videos.
