That guy makes my grandfather appear normal. My grandfather was injured twice in war. The second time, he got knocked over by the blast of a bomb and he stood up and continued to fight. Later it turned out that he had been hit by multiple shrapnel. One of them was lodged inoperable in his brain!

I was very confused at first when you said he fought in wars dating back as far as the literal 19th century and as recently as the 2nd world war, but by the time you got to detailing his experience in ww2 it didnt surprise me in the least that at 61 he was rescuing comrades from plane crashes and escaping POW camps...

i had a great uncle who has a _similar_ story, although not nearly as remarkable. But he fought in 3 wars including ww1 and ww2. He was so injured after ww1 (losing a few body parts, including his _nether_ _region_ ) that they refused his enlistment for ww2 originally, but he persisted and was able to persuade himself into an officer position due to his experience. He fought in some very important battles for the Canadians, including Vimy Ridge in WW1 and Dieppe in WW2 (becoming a POW) and Korea but idk anything about his time there. He made it back though. Sadly I never met him, died long before I was born, I believe sometime in the late 70's, but we had a picture of him in a ww1 trench with his medals hanging in my house when I was growing up.... wtf have i ever done..

This reminds me of one of our a company commander adjacent to my unit back in 2005. I noticed his glass eye, but just thought it lazy. I asked a buddy who had been around a lot longer than me what was up with ol' crazy eye. Apparently he was shot, the round blew out his eye and when the medic was trying to patch him up he slapped him in the face and told him "tend to the wounded who need you." I wish to this day I had taken the opportunity to shake his hand.
