  • 40 years ago in the summer of 1984 one of the biggest influences on my musical tastes was born. The legendary radio station WHTG aka FM1063. Modern Rock at the Jersey Shore. If you know, you know. So sit back, relax, have a "Goooood Afternoooon" and listen to my memories.... Enjoy!

It was a joy to get up at 400each morning for a year or so to do morning drive there. I had the radio voice and they have the music education. Thanks to them (staff DJ's and music experts they were) I got to play a coupla new groups I never heard of before: Depeche Mode and U2 among many others. Faye's house challenged NEW, LIR and others for shore listeners. They opened up that whole genre of music to many people

Detroit's Rock Station WRIF FM 101 - When they added The Cars , The Clash , Elvis Costello & The Pretenders in 1979 it was a game changer.

I was a listener. Friends of mine worked there at the change from Beautiful Music to Modern Rock. I volunteered staging, lighting and sound to help out when needed. 1996 I was in the studio and Rich was complaining about having to come back at midnight and do the overnight. I volunteered, he thought for a minute, and gave me a shot! I would go on to host Saturday mornings. Made the change over to G1063. And Steve is right, Corporate. Press broadcasting bought it and from then on you were just a voice. No choice in selections or the order of the playlist. "Music never stops - hit the post - Click here - say this." It sucked the creative life out of the place. But they can't take away the memories! And yea... may car still has a sticker on it! - Mark Mistretta

I was right there with you! I lived in LB, and 20 y/o in 84. I listened to WHTG and WMCX back in the 80's and 90's. It was a sad day for me when they were sold, kinda like loosing a good friend.

I loved the station and I have a bunch of random memories of hearing Kate Bush, the Undertones... all kinds of great stuff. I didn't drive in the 80s, but all of my notebooks had FM 106.3 and/or U68 stickers on them. My favorite listening moment was hearing Goldfinger's Here in your Bedroom. It was the first whiff I caught of the ska revival that defined much of my show-going in the 90s. Thanks for bringing up the memories!

We had KJET in Seattle that was playing the cutting edge music that wasn't on rotation at the 'bigger' stations. Sounds like FM 106.3 had more colorful DJs than we had. Sean's basement, that's a good one!

Awesome video - I grew up listening to WNEW as well, what a list of DJ's. I don't know of FM 106.3 of course, but we on Long Island had WLIR which later became WDRE and I grew up with them as well. Similar to FM 106.3. So cool you still have the stickers - great video and AWESOME T-shirt.

Great video I also remember listening to certain radio stations my friend worked the night shift at our local radio station and would bring in his own albums to play don't listen to radio much anymore just not the same

WMCX (88.9 FM, The X 88.9) broadcasted out of Monmouth college, and the weekend DJ's played a lot of the newest obscure alt/punk music at the time on weekends, and occasionally during the week, depending on the DJ.. That was like 86-87. Then I found WSOU 89.5....but thats not in the Monmouth County area....all we have now is 95.9 WRAT that is local. Thanks for the memories...forgot about 106.3. 🙂 Oh you left out The Pogues, Black Flag, Meat Puppets, School of Fish, etc. and DAMN you mentioned the Green Parrot! Can't forget about the Brighton Bar in LB! Many of mosh pit nights spent there! Shame they tore it down to rebuild there. :( Green Parrot...Now part of Jersey Shore hospital.. Well done video Steve, enjoyed watching it! :) Brings back tons of memories!

This sounds like a station in Toronto that I loved, CFNY 102;1, The Spirit of Radio. It started in a house in the suburbs and then moved downtown, and was eventually destroyed by commercial interests. It still exists, but it is a weak shadow of its former glorious self. Some of the artists you mentioned were played an that station. That was back in the day when they took requests and DJs actually did the programming!
