Nice comparison.
The side poles shouldn’t poke out of the top of the fabric pole tunnels. At the open end of each pole tunnel, there is a small piece of thick stitching. Push each side pole fully into its tunnel, then rest it against the stitching.
No more poking-out poles, and better tension. That may have been why one was less comfortable
