#MusicAndLights #JustAnIllusion
Very great job, Claudio! Sounds awesome with the Distressor and Roland chorus, -- Per Sweeney, to make it really 100% we'll have to use the small BOSS chorus (the original CE-2) and dbx 160 VU ( SH-1000 --> Boss CE-2 --> dbx 160) - at some point I bought the SH-1000, the CE-2 and a pair of DBX 160 VU but promptly forgot to make an addendum to my original video :D - one of the best syn bass sounds ever for sure!
Hey man!! Great!!! But please tell me, how do you know?...
If there is an article about it I would LOVE to know :-) grove on Paolo, and thanks for the inspiration 🕺🤟❤️
@@Doctormix Tony Swain himself wrote on his blog a few years ago "Hi Frankie, There has been much speculation about this subject but as I also played and recorded the bass lines it is time to put the record straight! The Bass was played using an early Roland SH1000 made in the late 70's This was originally designed to sit on top of a Hammond organ so it looked like one! This was a monophonic synth but would play two octaves at once so using a combination of square and sine waves an octave apart combined with a lot of wrestling with a portamento switch to get the slides this is how the bass lines were done. No sequencer was used at all on the bass lines just a lot of sweat and keeping time which was helped by me also being a drummer! The synth was recorded through a Boss chorus guitar pedal (blue type) and then compressed a lot through a studio DBX160 a really great vintage compressor. The bass was very high in the mix but cut through because of the compression and the split octaves.Just an illusion bass was the best of two different lines recorded over two days on Analogue 24tk before digital came in. I hope this finally answers the question.
Best
Tony"

SynthMania oh wow!!! Thanks for sharing man!! Much appreciated 🙏
I have pretty bad depression and it's hitting hard right now, but you still manage to break through it and make me smile, thank you :-)
Keep your chin up
The “Just an Illusion” baseline was my ringtone about 10 years ago!
One of the best and most modern bass synth sounds ever, still today sounds modern, always wanted to know how they did it. Thank You!
You missed a pretty good chance to name your channel "Claudio Audio."
One of the most beautiful bass lines in my humble opinion.
100%
I love Imagination, part of my growing up years. I just don’t know why I do. He does know “why”. Seems some people have different ears to mine, no matter how hard I try to listen. Thanks Doctor Mix!
This is still one of my favourite songs, mostly because of that bass! Glad I’m not alone.
Such a blast from the past, the doctor is in the house
The prescription for everything is always BASS
SH-1000 massive ✊
I love 70's synths. You need to get more Alex.
@@dzod I've got 7 synths from the 70s and have featured dozens and dozens more on my channel...
But yeah, definitely need more. 😃
ASSEMBLE!
@@AlexBallMusic Yes Alex but when you feature these synths you treat us to some lovely funk. Not many others do that. Oh and nice video on the CS-15.
Thank You so much Dr. MIX. You are great.
Love you back!
Jolley&Swain productions seem to consist of only this synth-sound back in the 80s... But: very good adaption. Lovely !
My first impression was like: one more weird producer on youtube, but the more I am looking your video the more inspired I become, and see your professionalism. Good job
This song is criminally underrated
Just a small correction regarding the ADSR-envelope: In the manual of the SH-1000, Roland states that "As these envelope modifying tablets operate on the "right-side-tablet-take-precedence" system, the right end tablet alone works regardless of other tablets depression" (Page 8). In other words, if you press down the "Percussion" tablet on the VCA, then the manual ADSR-control is disengaged, and the Percussion-preset takes control of the VCA alone.
One of the classics tunes of the 80ies - will be interesting
Niow niow!!
Awesome!
That was too cool!! One of my all time favorite bass sounds!! Never could figure out how they created that bass sound. Outstanding! 😎🎵🎼🎵🎸
@1:57 they are both square wave PWM signals. The only thing that differs is the duty cycle, i.e. the time that signal stay high vs the time signal stays low. I hope that wasn't presumptuous! Many thanks to you for bringing your synths passion on CZcams. I always watch you.
Amazing work Claudio, this is by far the best recreation of this legendary bass sound. You´re the master.
the raw tone of that synth is insane
If you read Tony Swain blog, he confirms that he used the Roland SH1000 synth, recorded through a Boss chorus guitar pedal and then compressed a lot through a studio DBX160 vintage compressor
What synth did he use for the song Burnin Up and Body Talk?
Whatever happened to them? At one point we had so much quality music that a lot of amazing music got overlooked. Music today isn't even close to the creativity of the past imo.
Everyone needs some Imagination... and some Doctor Mix too...
Funk just hit a new level !!
Love it, those are some of my favourite synth bass lines of all time.
ahhh I can listen to any note from this synth all day
Big fan of Imagination here... sounds really great, Music and Lights is my favorite! Great Job!
Oh yes, oh yes, ohh YES!
Excellent video! I enjoy watching your happiness!
Well, I Dare you Dr MIx to recreate the most iconic synth song of all times: Rock IT by Herby Hancock.
Come on! You can do it!
According to a former group member, the synth used was SH-2000
oh i had a this sh1000.when i was junior high school.now i was lost it.nostalgic
Imgination...two GREAT records full of SOUL!!! Great great Music!!!!!
synthmaniacs gotta hang together. and man, I just missed the premier
Man, this sound got so drastically underrated, now played daily
I could listen to that bass line all day just loop it for me.
Your videos are a joy to watch.
So good. Love the Sound of this classic funky Band. Thank you so much, Claudio. Much appreciated.
Sounded great. Always thought Imagination’s baselines were absolutely wicked! You just needed to play it with the slow boom/clap of a drum machine to really groove though.
Bass that warms the soul, what an amazing song, good work on the remake, it brings me back to the 90s
Ok Doctor Mix!!!!!! :) I see you! Awesome. I love those two songs. Plus In the Heat of the Night.
Making me feel old!
The track was mixed on an old harrison 32 desk which I found in a London studio in a back room, the engineer told me it belonged to redbus records so it must of been the desk.
I'm gonna enjoy this. I once met Leee Johns and Ashley Ingram whilst working in a delicatessen in Leather Lane (Near Hatton Garden)
I always thought it was recorded using a TB303. Especially from the sound of those glide notes. I know that they were one of the only few bands who used the 303 to actually be their "bass guitarist" rather than messing with the cutoff and resonance knobs, and creating acid house.
Yes so did I. An actual standard use of a 303!
@@newtronix That's what I always thought to the real use of the 303 as a bass not the acid squeals
'Rip it Up' by Orange Juice uses a 303 for a 'normal' bassline
And Newcleus - although they were more electro.
@@annother3350 true, although I'd still say that was quite an acid-like bassline, as opposed to something an actual bass guitarist might play
Jolley and Swain are pure genius !!
Paolo is awesome, his JD-800 vid is the reason I picked one of those up a while back lol.
I have so got to fix my sh1000
Fantastic !! My favourite sound ...
Doc, you nailed it absolutely perfect 👍
I love “Imagination” and I love the synth bass in those two songs. ✌️☺️
Absolute genius. Gracias Dr Mix!
Nailed it Claudio!
Thanks a lot! I adore "Music & Lights", fantastic Discofunk track, in my favorite style.
Man, you have just made my day.
Yeahhhh!!! Great video, and great sound!! I like Imagination a lot... The sounds, the athmosphere... I liked your video. Nice work. Congratulations. Thanx👍🏻
One of the holy grail sounds. great job.
Yeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhyyyyyyeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeesssss!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Love just an illusion! Awesome!
Madonna! THE PERFECTION. I bloody adore the best line bass of the world
I originally bought the Imagination Just Dubbing album in Bari, during the summer of 1983 in August. I brought it back to Canada to let my friends here it and it never caught on. Sole Sonic Force, Dazz Band, Shannon, and Grandmaster Flash were the Funk super stars. The English band Imagination never caught on in North America.
But sounds better than anything on your radio nowadays.
I was lucky to attend their concert given in Algeria exactly at the dome on the occasion of the police feast on June 1, 1984, I was 14 years old ; thank you :)
Uuuuh I remember the time long long ago.... Imagination Illusion every day in the Radio. Cool and groovy music - Good times😎
I would like to see video with full track reconstructionn
Imagination albums are MASTERPIECES of soul-disco-funk!
Wonderful!
Good job. Sounded great
Add to that the Linndrum, a Fender Rhodes, real claps, ... and you almost have the complete sound of Imagination.
cool ! thank you very much !!!
It's so close to the real thing, it almost sounds like the isolated bass synth stem on the real multitrack!!
EL Distressor works like Magic
Came for the bass, stayed for the nyaw-nyaw
You can never have too much niow niow.
Awesome DrMix, you are THE legend 💋
Afterparty with DoktorMix must be great fun 😁😁😁
@9:10 = best moment !! ❤💚🧡💙💛💜🖤❤💚🧡💙💛💜🖤❤💚🧡💙💛💜🖤
I *LOOOOVE* this song, always have!!!
yeahhh man !!! Love u !!!
I’ve been into edm since the late 90’s (fat of the land, dig your own hole, and homework were what I cut my teeth on). I love how you find these classic instruments and break down sounds and how they are incorporated into the songs they are featured in. I love the warm, fat, sounds of these analog synths and bass line generators. It’s so good my son (he’s almost 11 now) asks “Dad, did Dr. Mix come out with any new videos?! Keep it up, you’re doing great!
Much love from the States!
Btw 4:31 direct quote “This is the way you play it on the keyboard, niow...” 😂
So glad to own a Sh and Distressor too..
Well done!! Bravo
Doctor Mix and SynthMania ,two of my favorite music channels on youtube. Espen Kraft is also great ,maybe you know him too ?
Awesome!
Tes, thanks! This is the sound for me! The synth! Love the SH-1000
I have dreamed of someone explaining how to build this bass sound. funnily enough, I asked a customer of mine who works in the music industry to replicate it.....he used just a Minimoog with essentially same settings - but - used the 3rd oscillator for a deep background tone.... somehow that seemed to be the magic ingredient. However you used effects and eq with just two oscillators.
It's such a legendary bass sound, thank you for tackling this ❤️🧡💛💚💜💙
Guy Wilkinson this is what was used on the record, along with a Roland chorus pedal.
Niaw Niaw - That´s why I hit the like button
Synthmania and Dr. Mix 🐐 of musicians 🎶 #thebest
I've been looking for this since forever. A huge THANK YOU from this happy dude.
You're we
lcome!!!
I keep coming back to this video. It sounds absolutely spot on! It also sounds really close to the same bass sound used in the song Bimbo by Yello
Doctor by Music= doctor mix
Doc is a genius and very talented man.
VERY GOOD MY DEAR FRIEND >>> YOU ARE SUPER STAR
Wow. Awesome. Love it Claudio. 😃👍🏻
Magic ears you've got Claudio. I didn't need headphones. Just a bottle of Barolo.
Is it just amazing!!
Yup, that's the stuff, but I've also done these sounds using a fretless bass, compression, a Roland octaver, a chorus and a touch of distortion and some judicious EQ-ing.. In that order. Oh, and to 'lock' the octaver, use a bass sound that has little bass to it, then cut the 'twang' out via the pedal and EQ... Believe me, with a Roland guitar Octaver pedal your bass can sound like an analogue synth..
Dr mix mixing entertainment and information like a boss Again!
SUPER !!!!!!!
His face ay 9:55 is priceless! You used to annoy me when I first saw your videos, now I love you!
I love this so much. Doctor Mix, you made my day yet again.
