I know CZcams and the algorithm don't like stuff like this but I wanted to do something different that I enjoy outside of computers and I hope this video will serve as some instructional content for those who love music and guitars or maybe those who wondered how a guitar comes together. I am very glad that I found this video on CZcams. Just recently I bought myself the same Epiphone for $ 120 in a rather deplorable condition. Now I'm repairing it a little. This is my first Les Paul type guitar. I've been dreaming of a vintage sunburst for a very long time, with a branded slightly yellowish plastic on the pickguard and the pickups frame. And so, recently I realized my dream, and at the same time I bought some missing spare parts along with plastic. But alas, I could not imagine what the result would be in the end. Your video literally showed everything I was hatching in my head. Now, however, I want to install a coil switch on top, like the classic Les Paul. I am insanely grateful to you, comrade! I wish you creative success and growth of your channel!

You'd be surprised how many people that are interested in PC Hardware also like guitars or even play themself, so keep at it. I personally also own multiple guitars, some of wich I completely customised myself. One is a noname Stratocaster that I originally bought for 60 Bucks and I only kept the body of that guitar and replaced everything else on it. It has a silver metallic paintjob on the body, C-Shape full maple neck with skunkstripe on the back, black tortoise tripplelayer pickguard and backplate, Fat Pole Singlecoils and all Gold Hardware, except for the volume and toneknobs wich are black anodized metal speed Knobs (with a white pearl inlay for the volume only). The other two are a Les Paul Studio lookalike from a company named Steiner, has Full Mahagony body with set Mahagony neck and curved Maple Top and has a flat red paintjob. I only changed the Stock Pickups for a set of higher output Bladebuckers with Red and Black covers. And last but not least a ESP LTD AX-50 that I completely stripped down and turned into my own interpretation of the Max Cavalera signature Model ESP AX from 2007.

One of these fell in my lap for $50. I swapped for Grover minis and a new bridge, and I love it, too.
One thing - I took some Scotchbrite to the back of the neck and I was really surprised at how much smoother it feels to play. Maybe it's just me, but the glossy factory finish had my hands sticking to the neck more than I imagined. The matte finish of just a few passes with Scotchbrite made a significant difference for me.

First time ever watching this guy. Seems like I am the only one, as I was specifically searching for this guitar model.
He seems very enthusiastic, as well as generally knowledgeable on the subject. The passion is encouraging. That said, he has a whole lot of work to do to even reach what I would consider intermediate level (I am nowhere near a pro myself).
*note: consider this constructive criticism, and completely in good faith*
I would recommend bumping up targeted/skill focused practice time to at least 30-45 min per day, 5-6 days per week on top of the warm-up exercises and noodling. Sounds like there is also a tremendous need for a metronome here as well; although they are very tedious work, they are incredibly effective at correcting issues with timing. This will go a lot further than buying more gear. Believe me, I’ve been there. Probably dropped $20-30k in guitars and amps (custom shop stratocaster and half-stack 100w Marshall was my go-to, but had many other MIA Fender/Gibson guitars and brand name amps) before I was good enough to even jam out with other musicians without sounding incompetent.
Also, is that LP out of tune? I’ve always preferred Tubescreamers with single coils, especially Strats. It would be interesting to hear one with a P90 setup. They also do better with only a small amount of overdrive/gain, if any, and pair with a fuzz really well.
    Anyway, love your channel!

  • @EvelynRoods
    @EvelynRoods Před 3 lety

Part of the reason they sound so trebly and bright is because of the pots. Single coil and single coil style pickups (Jazzmaster pickups and P90s) really like 250K pots rather than the 500k pots that this guitar most likely came stock with. Having the lower resistance causes more of a treble roll-off.

But now I am not so sure after watching your mods to this two pickup version , as you have a real rocker on the bridge pickup and that fifties sound at the neck pickup it is fantastic . I have already modded an Ibanez Gio from three pickups to two soapbar P90 pickups and it is great but does not have the same tone as your mods . I wonder if soapbar ,dogear or humbucker shape P90 pickups would all have similar or different tone if fitted to the same guitar

Get. 8mm. Tuners (Vintage spec). You will save yourself SUCH a headache from drilling new holes if you simply get tuners matched to spec. Epiphone tuner holes, especially on the LP special i and ii are vintage spec and have a diameter of 8mm. modern tuners have a bushing diameter of 10mm and will require you to drill new holes entirely

I'm not sure what the output on those P90s is, but from the sound of it, I don't think those Epiphone POTS are able to push them properly. Epi POTS are usually 250k and P90s are traditionally around 500-800k. It looks alright tho, ya dun good on the external mods!
Also, if you're looking for an all tube amp that's affordable, the Peavey Windsor amp is an incredible bargain. The sound signature is modeled after the Marshall JCM800 2203 specifically. They sell in a 100watt head and a 50watt combo. That VOX amp you have is good, but it only has a tube preamp section. I used to run the 100watt head through a Marshall 1960A cab (the JCM900 series with Celestion G12T-75 12' speakers) and it was all tube british distortion for DAYS!

The only thing the Epi LP Special needs by way of upgrade is the verbal part of their online reviews. They are top notch from out the box. Don't change the pups or nothing. They're Epiphone so no discernable "improvement" is gained by dumping cash into them. I've done some upgrades on pups but I got shanked. Just not worth it. No change. You want to change your guitar tone, get a pedal. By the way I like your review. If upgrading guitar stuff is important to you then gitter done! It's just that I find it's futile. Amps and pedals are where the noise comes from.

Honestly, a good set up, set of pickups, and upgraded hardware…. All in for like 300-500 ish… it’s a hell of a deal. mine is my stage guitar, thrown around and treated like dog shit. Don’t care because it was bought to be used as such, and just upgraded its reliability/tuning stability

Just got into guitars a month or so ago so it’s sick to see this type of content from you! PCs and guitars? Found the perfect channel 👍

Awesome video 😎 I have the transparent black version and love it! I plan on changing the nut and tuners out and plan on keeping the hum buckers in it.

If you can find someone to give this guitar a good set-up, and the Epiphone Special II is actually a pretty decent guitar. Bolt on neck isn't really a Les Paul feature, but it's the same as every Strat.

This guitar is good for lead and rythym you jus have to set up the pickup height and poil piece height. I personally like humbuckers better. You can set them up to sound like a p90 if you know what your doing

Nice one! Always saw a guitar in the background and was really interested. ;) This guitar looks far better now and the neck pickup sounds just awesome. Not sure about the bridge PU. I'd try getting the pickup closer to the strings in order to give it a bit more power and low end. Or maybe go back to the humbucker there (maybe put an open cover on it in order to give it a comparable look to the P90) and screw it down in order to lower the output level closer to the neck pickup and also get a more dynamic sound out of it. But don't touch the neck pickup - that's just great now. What about the string action? And congratulations to your AC10. I'd love to see a few more guitar related videos although a microphone in front of the amp would do a great job then.
Yeah, computers are my hobby but guitars are a part of my job. :D
