  • Hello and welcome back!
    In today's vlog I return to the Isle of May and Bass Rock which are both located off the South-East Coast of Scotland. I travelled from Dunbar harbour on this lovely adventure with a small sailing company called BlueWild (this is my second year sailing with them and they are fantastic).
    I have split this episode into two parts, the first one of gannets at Bass Rock and the second episode will be on the Isle of May.
    On the trip I took with me my Fujifilm X-H2s and X-H2, the Fujinon 150-600mm and the Fujinon 16-55mm. I hope you enjoy!

    Another video demonstrating that a talented photographer 😉 can get super results without using gear from one of the top 3 manufacturers (CNS…). Can you believe it ? 😂. I’m a happy owner of the 150/600 and I selected the X-H2 over the X-H2s because of the cropping capacities offered by the 40 Mpx sensor. I find it very needed when shooting at small birds. As you own the two bodies, when or why are you selecting one over the other?

    • @wildandfreevictoria
      @wildandfreevictoria  Před měsícem +1

      Hehe thank you so much! No CNorS on this channel! All Fuji 😄✌🏻 hehe can you believe it 😝 That is a wonderful set up that you have and completely understandable about the cropping element for the X-H2, it’s a wonderful camera! And definitely for small bird photography, I agree. My main reason for the two is that I use the X-H2s mainly for my filming - particularly shooting in high speed filming in 4K capabilities which the X-H2 does not have. For photography (and some normal speed filming) the X-H2 does work fantastically, i particularly love it for landscape photography as well, it’s been brilliant. So if I am out wanting to do a mixture of filming and photography I would usually pick up the X-H2s so I can do everything, then just photography I am happy with the X-H2 🙂

    • @gilleslast3561
      @gilleslast3561 Před měsícem

      @@wildandfreevictoria I was expected some reason related to better autofocusing capabilities of the X-H2s to justify your decision. May be I will try it again for birds in flight situations as I’m much more confident now with my set-up than I was when I did the upgrade from a X-T3+100/400.

    Very nice video. I’m just wondering have you notice Fuji tracking has gotten worse? They keep coming up with firmware that doesn’t really work. The original firmware actually works better than their latest, the previous one 6 was a mess.

  • @frankinblackpool
    @frankinblackpool Před měsícem +1

    Erik , what a hero sat on the rock!
    When you were filming in sunlight, did you use any ND filters, or did you want to keep the shutter speed high when filming at 120fps, please?
    Also that Fujifilm 150-600mm lens is awesome. I just wish that Panasonic, or even Olympus, did something as tac-sharp for my MFT cameras.

    • @wildandfreevictoria
      @wildandfreevictoria  Před měsícem +1

      I know bless him, proper cute little guy!
      I didn't have any filters attached on my telephoto, for the b-roll at Seacliff I had no filter on my 33mm but on the boat with the 16-55mm I had a CPL filter attached. I usually keep the shutter speed high anyway to match the 120p - it's usually x2 of what the frame rate is.
      I am actually really pleased with the 150-600mm, I thought the aperture would be a bit annoying but actually it has been ok so far. I hope Panasonic bring out something for you son 🙂

    • @frankinblackpool
      @frankinblackpool Před měsícem +1

      @@wildandfreevictoria Thanks for letting me know about your shutter speeds for high frame rates. My camera can be set to Shutter Angles which does all the maths for me, no matter what my frame rate is, to get the same equivalent of x2 of the frame rate without me having to work it out. I was wondering, if when you film anything with a high frame rate if you have used or experimented with different shutter speeds?
      I have not done this myself but I'm going to experiment with a x4 shutter speed of the frame rate in the hope of getting a more crispy slow motion image. Not all the time, just some times for variety. I was wondering if you'd experimented with this idea of a faster shutter speed than normal for high frame rates, and what your thought were if you had.
      This is all one big learning curve for me.

    • @wildandfreevictoria
      @wildandfreevictoria  Před měsícem

      So this is a great question and yes, I have experimented with shutter speeds. To be honest, it is usually over the x2 amount because I shoot in f-log which puts the ISO at a base of 640, then if I am shooting with a wider aperture (for example, on my primes i usually do) then the exposure is over-exposed so i have to either use a filter or crank up the shutter speed, so most of my stuff anyway is higher shutter speed. I probably should get an ND filter at some point but for now it is ok.
      I’m not too sure if that answers your question but definitely play around with your settings and see what you like best. It all gives it a different vibe 🙂

    • @frankinblackpool
      @frankinblackpool Před měsícem

      @@wildandfreevictoria Hello, your reply was indeed helpful. The lack of ND filters gave me a clue about what to do next with fast moving subjects that I want to keep crispy rather than have unintentional motion blur using the 180 degree shutter rule.
      I also swear by ND filters to keep my exposure to the x2 rule. My camera is set to the 180 degree rule, which like I mentioned before, does all the maths for me no matter what frame rate I choose.
      If you are in the market for some top quality ND filters with zero colour cast then I can highly recommend Breakthrough Filters based in San Francisco. They make excellent ND filters. I have found that a 3-Stop and 6-Stop are all that is needed for just about any lighting condition. Don't do what I did and buy filters for your current lenses. I did this and then bought new lenses with different diameter/threads. Buy the biggest circular ND filter that you think that you will need and then get Step-Up rings for all your lenses that are a bit too small. That way you will have an ND filter for every lens and you only had to buy two filters.
      Another great ND filter is made by Peter McKinnon of Polar Pro Filters. Its a variable ND filter from 2-Stop to 5-Stop. It does what it says on the tin, when the lighting changes then you spin the filter to adjust the light entering your camera. This filter is bolted to all my lenses because it is so quick to use. Rather than having to swap out single stop filters, which can eat valuable time when filming, the Variable ND filter has never let me down.
      There are pros and cons of variable ND and single stop ND filters. The down side to single stop filters is that they take time to swap out when lighting changes.
      The down side of variable ND filters only shows itself with wide angle lenses less that around 18mm on a full frame camera. Because the variable ND filter works the same as a Polarising filter then with a wide angle lens, you run the risk of x-banding in the sky in bright lighting. This only happens on the widest of lenses and you will never have this problem with zoom lenses.
      I have ND filters on all the time, however if I'm filming something high speed then I'll take a punt and use a higher frame rate, smaller shutter angle, and hope this will give me sharper subjects. This would mean ditching the ND filters if they don't let me stop down enough.
      I sincerely hope I did not type my fingers to the bone mansplaing all this if you knew before hand. If that's the case then this reply will vanish in the wind.😀
