I like how honest you are about acquiring a foreign language. Its a complex task if one does not do it full time (like go to class 8 to 5 for 365 days) . When doing it and balancing other activites its tough.
I loved hearing about your learning journey of learning German. It sounds very similar to my experience of learning Spanish. I learnt it within a year when I lived there and was forced to use it for everyday interactions. I had also learnt french but in school but it just didn't stick because I didn't have this same immersive experience.

This is interesting I have a brother who lives in Coblentz. I went to visit him. I was there for like three months, I thought was beautiful and I wanted to move there, but I was like no way I’m going to learn this language I learn English, and I learn Spanish. I had German is hard, but I admire you and him for learning German Reading and writing in German it’s tough.
Yes twenty years ago my experience was of people not wanting to speak English. Glad to know I haven’t missed anything lol I’ll stick to south of France in Europe.
