Today I'll show you how to make an MDF jig that turns your circular saw into a fully functioning Track Saw. You don't need any expensive tools.. in fact all you need is a circular saw... duh, a thread tap, and some spring clamps. Let me know what you think about cool shop / woodworking jigs and if you're interesting in more of these shop - based projects.

Nice unit. I don't really see a need for the fence, though. The groove that your aluminum piece rides in should be all you need.

    • @Realism91
      @Realism91 Před 4 lety +2

Alternative instead of screwing the aluminum rail to the saw you could get thicker aluminum and cut a kerf in it and slide it on the side of the saw just have to wing bolts lock it from above after.

Ten elements of the perfect DIY track saw:
    1) Reduced track thickness for greater cut depth--especially with circular saws less than 7 1/4" as so many are today.
    2) No fence. Rout two tracks to make the track non-handed.
    3) HDPE runner, extended forward for saw alignment ahead of material engagement.
    4) Non-slip tape = no clamps
    5) Rout T-slot or dovetail groove in underside of track for those situations where clamping is desirable.
    6) Shorter interlocking tracks.
    7) Embedded tape measure on track edge.
    8) Spring for true plunge. (Would reduce runner length.)
    9) Butt parts to spaer blocks. Don't rely on measurements for precise alignment.
    10) Zero clearance base plate insert for zero tear out.
Thumbs up if you'd like a video tutorial. It's do two. One CNC. One standard power tools. Both would include comparisons to so-called universal track saws, including costs.

Video is great, especially the computer animation. Design of the track doesn’t seem that useful though, you had to move the clamps 3 times to make that cut at the end of the video. Maybe the “fence” that you used for clamping could have been made wider so the saw’s motor could clear the clamps without all that readjusting? Ain’t nobody got time fo’ dat!

Very good guide, but it still takes the circular saw baseplate above the guide, so that the saw loses maximum depth capacity... How about making a parallel aluminum guide that screws to the side of the saw base, so that the saw base glides directly on the material to be cut, and thus allows the original cutting depth to be conserved???

But give me some time to find it!!!

To get accurate cuts with a right-bladed saw, you had to set up your initial fence a lot further out, and then cut left-handed so the saw is supported by the piece being cut, NOT by the off-cut side! This is a very common mistake when using a circular saw and it results in the saw tilting left at the end of the cut - which lowers the quality of the cut dramatically.

Should have shown a micrometer reading on the cutoff to show how accurate it was.

I think this is bad because then you've got those two bars on the bottom of your saw all the time, unless you want to remove and replace them over and over. I'd call this a big fail.
