🧬 Sickle cell anemia is caused by a genetic defect where hemoglobin S replaces hemoglobin A, resulting in abnormal red blood cells. Inheritance of two defective genes from both parents leads to the disease, while one gene causes sickle cell trait, a carrier state.
👨‍👩‍👧 Couples planning children can undergo genetic testing due to the hereditary nature of the disease, which primarily affects individuals of African, Mediterranean, Indian, Saudi Arabian, and Hispanic descent.

She obtained her Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) at the University of Colorado in 2012, and Master's Degree from the University of Northern Colorado. Previously, she was Assistant Professor at Seattle Pacific University from 2017 to 2020.
