I had grown to like him a lot too, he is a jerk because he was raised with his dad expecting a lot from him, so his attitude is masking a caring person just so he doesn't appear "weak"
Also I also melted when he said "You want me to care for this?...but I'm Snotlout, I'm very irresponsible.." 🥺
His dad was a big jerk and it seemed he never actually cared about snoutloud. I feel bad tbh
His mum seemed like a really nice lady though! He clearly takes after her in everything except looks. Stitching, writing, and he’s clearly sensible! (Also, to be completely honest, she’s probably a badass too!)

RTTE was the height of httyd. Snotlout's characteritzation, or anyone else's for that matter, doesn't get any better than what we got there. They did him so dirty on the third movie.

I feel incredibly bad for someone who's only watched the movies. Like sure the tv series takes time to watch, and you can't really watch rtte without defenders of berk and you can't watch dob with riders of berk, but... Literally every character is good. The story is good. It actually probably has some deep/ dark moments which they gloss over (show is aimed at kids), and it's just so good
But also my favourite character is Dagur. Snotlout is good, but I prefer Dagur, and I am willing to argue about it.

Snotlout was screwed over in the third movie. He went through the most character development of all the team in RTTE. He became the number one for Hiccup and Astrid, and while he was cocky and still Snotlout, he became the man that will be the first to know the Hiccstrid baby was born, the man that stands to the left of the Chief in battle and in meetings. He became the future High General that the Chief and Chieftess will rely on. Love his character so much, and and it breaks my heart to watch the third movie and se what he was reduced to.

He and Hiccup's friendship is so good. The juxtaposition of Snotlout's attitude with his undeniable respect for Hiccup is something so personal to me.
Also Hookfang is the best possible dragon companion for him.
Some of my favourite moments are when those two are forced to work together.
Total opposites, but they do cancel out each other’s shortcomings as a result. And there is an undeniable respect between them, of course reinforced by friendly banter..!

A line taken completely out of context to the actual episode for a series about fighting for dragons should not have made me this emotional
It’s interesting to see how the show was able to take one of the more one-dimensional characters of the movie and give him enough development that he’s become the foil to nearly every character he’s paired with, whether it be Hiccup’s weight of expectations, or Fishlegs’s brain over brawn approach, or the riders as a whole being more ideological contrasting his more pragmatic approaches. He’s still an obnoxious jerk at times, but he’s far from being unreasonable like his dad can be, and he’s been shown to have a stunning degree of self-awareness, like steering Gustav and Minden away from making similar mistakes.

10:22 is a really nice moment, it shows just how much snotlout actually respects hiccup as a leader. He was trying to hold down the edge while hiccup was away, but when he comes back you can see the visible relief on his face. Too bad they shit away all of his development in the movies…

Ik his character in Httyd 3 was like Httyd 1 showing no growth. In the shows it show how he is actually sweet / reliable and honourable and would become an even better person as he got older.

Is it just me or did Zach do a phenomenal job compared to Jonah as Snotlout? Don’t get me wrong, I still like him in the movies, especially Jonah’s work in the second movie, but I feel like Zach manages to better voice Snotlout in regards to more than just his snobby attitude.
I really like zack as snotlout, i think his voice is a bit more expressive. maybe because jonah is more used to live action comedy type roles rather than doing voiceover for animated movies.

Yeah I have to agree. Jonah was a good choice for the films to go alongside Jay who’s also famous for comedies, but Zach seems to better capture emotion in any situation; though benefit of the doubt he probably has more more VA experience than Jonah.

In almost everything other than the movies themselves, “everything” including things such as the shows and shorts, Snotlout is instead voiced by Zach Pearlman, most likely because Jonah Hill either didn’t want to commit to that large amount of VA work or simply scheduling/contractual conflicts. This isn’t a new thing as even in Race to the Edge, only 4 returning characters(Hiccup, Astrid, Fishlegs and Tuffnut) are actually voiced by their feature-production actors.
This show did Snotlout so good though, he’s absolutely one of my favorite characters ever now thanks to RTTE alone and no thanks to the movies. Even though it’s been years I still think often about how good his character development was and still is.

This is one of the very rare times I prefer the television actor to the movie actor. Not that Jonah Hill did a bad job, but the television actor just gives him so much more life. In the movies, he's just the obnoxious jock you expect, but the TV series could have him be sarcastic, heartfelt, a bit cowardly but not so much you disliked him, funny, loyal, jealous, etc., and he just had a lot more personality.

What can I say? I LOVE this man so much!!! I don't understand why Snotlout is always overlooked and underappreciated. He, along with Tuffnut and Fishlegs, is the reason I love the franchise so much. I love this little man, he's so cute. So much that three years ago I got a tattoo of him. It takes me such a long time to get through a single episode of RTTE because I always have to pause the video to soak in his absolute cuteness and his handsome self. He is the smartest, strongest, and most adorable Viking in all of Berk. He is way better than Hiccup.

While the movies were phenomenal, they were by necessity focused completely on Hiccup and his relationships with Toothless, Stoick, and later Valka. But RTTE gave the side characters a chance to shine, and I think Snotlout shone the most. He’s more often than not the butt of many a joke, but between his sarcastic and petty sense of humor, arrogant bluster covering a wealth of insecurities, and relationships with the other characters, he’s probably the most complex Dragons character in this series. His friendships with the other Riders are so wildly diverse and he plays off of each of them in very different ways. His relationship with Hookfang has been the most interesting Rider-dragon pair since the Cartoon Network series, with episodes like “Race to Fireworm Island” showing that for all their fighting, they both deeply trust and care for one another. And of course his interactions with Spitelout - it’s a surprisingly emotional rollercoaster seeing how their relationship progresses from abusive to mutual respect, and it makes Snotlout a great foil to Hiccup as he goes through the same daddy issues that the latter did in the movies.
TLDR - Snotlout is the GOAT of RTTE.

11:54 this is a rather fun moment. Snotlout is a prick but in his own Snotlout way he is trying to be helpful. Also I love how the show isn't shy about using Hiccup being a cripple for some humor while also incorporating it into the story from time to time
I love how Hiccup just keeps making weird noises like he's thoroughly disturbed by it but won't actually complain because he knows it's a logical solution.
Also that one time when Toothless tried to drag him by the leg and ended up just pulling it off him (in the episode where they meet the Deathsong)
I feel like this is the only Dreamworks show where they don’t have choppy ass animation like a certain blue-headed cranium.
I remember liking snotloud AND HOOKFANG after watching the series so much that I tried buying hookfang figures LMAO
Edit: I also LOVE Snotloud everytime he interacts with Hookfang, both of their stubbornness/not wanting to show their concerns (sometimes) towards each other makes it so much bettes
They're a very good duo! Both are kind of the same. I like to think that, after some time, they started to show their real selves only to each other, caring and supporting one another without the need to feel ashamed. It's really nice to think about.

Honestly even though the writers tried SO hard to make the twins the comedy of the show Snotlaut really carried it in my opinion!
as much as I like the twins generally I think they made them a little too dumb and after a while they got really annoying and actively anger inducing, even riders of Berk kinda knew when to dial them in
And don't get me wrong at all! I do very much love the twins, and they have some extremely funny moments on their own! I just wish they were a bit toned down, especially in more series and especially emotional situations
But where the twins fall short snotlaut really succeeds
He's sarcastic, snappy and has some AMAZING banter with the rest of the group, I really love how flushed out and characterized he is in this show instead of just being a meat headed asshole for no apparent reason other than the sake of it
He also gets some very good character development throughout, especially nearing the end of the show!

There's one episode in season six that made me really love how far he's come, and thats when Reiker and Trader Johan attack wingmaiden island to try and find the hidden lenses
I think it's S6 E3 "Chain of Command"
Where in the beginning of the episode Snotlaut is being
Snotlaut
and challenging hiccups authority and while on Wingmaiden island, meets Mindon, who suffers the same issue with the leader of her tribe, Itahli
Snotlout makes a snarky remark about Mindon "being passed up for a blonde" inadvertently feeding into Mindon's feeling of inadequacy
because of this later in the episode Mindon tries to take matters into her own hands during an emergency and in doing so puts the entire island in jeopardy because she fell for a diversion
after this Snotlaut and Mindon crash land in the forest, where Mindon suffers a breakdown and decides to quit being a Wingmaiden and runs away into the forest
After some one sided back and forth with Hookfang he decides to go farther in looking to try and convince her to reconsider
He finds her and after some conversation says this:
"Mindon, I think we got our signals crossed here, I never told you it was okay to quit. Alright, here goes: quitting, as good as it feels, and as little effort as it takes, *never* works."
"I've quit the dragon riders so many times, so I speak from experience.
Mindon replies
"But Itahli, she doesn't respect me"
"she gave you the most important job of all, to defend the *whole* island while she was gone"
"but you said I was passed over for a blonde.."
"and you listened to ME? I'm an *IDIOT* ask anyone!
**"Look this is it right here, this is your moment, maybe not your moment of glory, but the moment you decide what's most important to you: your own feelings, or the vow you made to these women, and all of these dragons."**
That speech made me so happy when I heard it, it showed just how much Snotlaut grew throughout the series, and learned to put the promise to protect dragons, his island, and his people over his own ego and his own personal struggles

I genuinely love the development they gave Snotlout in RTTE. He was still a self-absorbed jerk (which is hilarious), but he had so many moments of genuine heroism and could even be a positive influence on other characters by the end. I'm glad others appreciate him too
I love the dynamic of “I’m a liar” with Snotlout and “I’m here to expose your lies” with Hookfang
In the course of a decade of this franchise, this dude has grown a lot. Everyone has, and it makes me smile. Looking back at who they used to be, to how much they've achieved as a team!

Snotlout's entire character is meant to be snarky and rude but in a humorous way, and of course with a pinch of redeeming characteristics too. He's an overall fantastic character in the series.

The thing that annoys me so much is that there was SO MUCH character development in the series, and not just for Snotlout for the whole gang, and it was all just invalidated in the second movie and they were all back to their stupid selves except for Hiccup and Astrid

Absolutely love Snotlout and especially LOVE the bond, the relationship he and Hookfang have got going on between them. He pretends to be mean and tough, but when left alone i can totally see him turn into a complete softy, especially when pempering Hookfang. You can tell he's not actually a total jerk, that that's just the outcome of terrible parenting and that's very heartbreaking
I'm rewatching RTTE after 4 years, and I forgot how much I loved his character! His character-centered episodes were always some of the best ones, and he always had some sort of growth where we get to see him be more sensitive.

this HAS to be my favorite httyd video this year so far! snotlout is indeed a work-in-progress, and i just LOVE how RTTE emphasized that! i think him being independent at the Edge with his friends and their dragons, away from the influence of his dad, helped him improve his character and grow up!

Commenting for interaction, snotlout is underrated by the fans and his teammates
He is easily the best character in the show. He is the one with the best relationship with his dragon(in the show), the one with the most character development, the one that is the most fleshed out and he has a very natural progression.
He actually changes from beginning to end. We see his biggest fears and insecurities. How he sees himself and others. His relationship with his dad who he just wants to impress. Him realizing that Astrid is not interested in him and getting over her. Even being happy for Hiccup and Astrid when the riders find out they are a couple. We see his mature and couragous side. And he becomes more and more of a leader, even being the main leader in some later episodes. He grows from his mistakes. But he doesn't change completely which makes it all the more realistic and believable. He is still mean to people and rude. He is still over confident and selfish, but by that time we and all the riders already know that it is just a front. And they learn to accept him.
Great writing. Funny how he is literally the only character that changes. I guess Hiccup also changes a little bit due to Viggo who is the only villain in the franchise who actually makes Hiccup loose it and want to actually kill Viggo.

I'm currently watching rtte (from riders of berk and defenders of berk), I'm on season 7 but man the show really shows everyone's competencies. In the movies, they're moved to background characters shadowing Hiccup and Astrid while also being comic relief, while in the series everyone was given a chance to shine and really proved to the audience how they all work as a group, and that without one they're incomplete.
