    I like your 'upside-down fire' lighting technique... ie a bed of 'large coals' in first then small coals and paraffin rag on top. I can't remember if I mentioned this method before, but the upside-down technique certainly works well with log fires (rather than the usual method of paper and kindling on the bottom and progressively larger pieces of wood on top). Upside-down = less smoke and faster lighting up.
    I was also wondering about using rainwater. That's got to be best eh? The only trouble is I get hundreds of those little tail-thrashing mosquito larvae in my water butt!
    I've been fancying a 'centrifugal' spark-catching extension to the chimney. Do you know of a source for any such drawings? Basically the exhaust passes through a fixed 'fan' shaped part which spins the flow into a volute shape, throwing particles outwards into a wider-diameter chimney (much as you will have seen on many steam loco pictures)… where the particles settle. I am wondering how coarse the pitch of the 'fixed fan' blades needs to be (45 degrees, 60 degrees?) in order to avoid excessive back-pressure and the risk of a blowback. Any thoughts appreciated.
    Just one more think. Is their a vacuum brake cylinder somewhere?
    Station Road Steam now does Snifter Valves to fit your steam chests. They make a very satisfying sssffffP! sound when the Regulator is opened.
    Great camera work.
    Thanks

    • @TheModelav8r
      @TheModelav8r  Před 4 lety +6

      Hello Stephen
      Sorry to say I wasn’t using the upside down technique to light the fire. The large lumps going in first was charcoal soaked in paraffin. This gets the fire going well before putting on the coal.
      I always use rain water as this prevents scaling and have an in-line filter to remove any debris and the larvae.
      I am not familiar with the centrifugal spark catcher. I will have to look that one up.
      I have PNP vacuum brake cylinders on my driving truck and on my carriages
      And yes looking to buy the Snifter valves from SRS

      Thanks. The two pipes from the loco to the tender are the water as you say and the other one is the vacuum generated by the loco going to the brakes on the tender.

    Did you make the handles for the gate valves ? They are much better than the standard offering from SRS. I even prefer them to the new investment casting handle being fitted to this years locos

      I bought them from a chap on EBay when I got the loco three years ago. Not sure if he still makes them. I couldn’t be doing with the original ones that should be confined to the loft tank!
