this is the single greatest song ever written about depression -- not because it makes you feel depressed ... but because it gives you hope. and sometimes that's all you need.
    this song saved my life.

This here was a moment, my friends.
As the instruments went quiet and Ryan prepared to sing the lyric many Guster fans clung to the last couple years as we tried to keep eyes and minds pointed forward - I turned around, looked behind me and made it a point to look up at the massive crowd.
Everyone sang along - somehow all unconsciously agreeing to do so in a somewhat hushed voice...
"Be calm... be brave... it'll be ok"
I'll admit, I got a little choked up as I took a big breath and had the realization... we've made it.
I know we're not completely out of the woods yet, but that moment on an amazing night in the foothills of Colorado was my personal finish line. I'd reached the end of a very dark year and a half.
I'm so glad I made the decision to get out to see this show.
    I'll never, ever forget it.

True story. I almost didn’t go to the show and I had been looking forward to it for months (we had 4th row seats and Guster has been in my Top 5 for 25+ years). This was a bucket list thing for me. But a few days before we were scheduled to take the 4 hour flight to Denver, my anxiety reared its ugly head and it was crippling. Thanks to my wife, some medication, meditation and prayer, I pushed through. I kept thinking: “Be calm, be brave, it’ll be okay…” The anxiety didn’t go away, but I was able to be more present around other Guster fans on the bus. And as we pulled up to Red Rocks it started pouring rain. My first thought was “oh no, this is terrible.” But we saw on the radar that the storm was moving out and I began to hope the show would go on. My kids’ favorite song is “Hello Mister Sun,” so as the rain subsided, I was overcome with emotion when I saw a double rainbow in the backdrop of Red Rocks. It was such a surreal moment. And for those few hours at Red Rocks, I was present and my heart was full. The Lone Bellow blew my away, and every single moment of Guster just brought me joy and peace. The performance of this song was transcendent, and I thank God and everything else that gave me the courage to push through my anxiety and make the trip. Love to anyone else who struggles with anxiety, you’re not alone.

Anxiety is the absolute worst! I am so, so glad you were able to conquer it and be at the show! I too struggle with anxiety and other mental health issues, so "be calm, be brave, it'll be okay" has become one of the most powerful phrases for me to get past bad times. This trip was at the top of my bucket list for years and years, and I had the exact same reaction... absolutely transcendent. I am so glad we got to celebrate this amazing experience together!

I like this song, but I feel like those words & other lyrics similar to that are unhelpful, though, if we’re being honest. One of my first panic attacks was when I was younger listening to ‘Tender’ by Blur; I think that the lyrics, “Come on, come on, come on, get through it,” over and over actually contributed to my anxiety. I say this because I’m trying to figure out which types of lyrics are particularly helpful.

    • @notanotherjamesmurphy5574

Literally the best night of my life. I came from Virginia Beach, too! I grew up visiting Denver often to see family there and lived there for a couple of years. I worked at the base of Red Rocks and every day I'd eat my lunch there enjoying the view and natural acoustics, but I never was able to see a show. It stayed at the top of my bucket list, so getting to fly in with some of my favorite people to see my favorite band at my favorite spot in the universe after the hell that was 2020.. it was just... transcendent. I cannot properly put into words what this show meant to me. Like so many others, this was a bucket list topper and something I'm not sure I ever thought I'd be able to experience. I grew up visiting family in Denver often and lived there for a couple of years in college. I worked at the base of Red Rocks for a while and every single day I'd spend my 2-hour lunch break sitting on those steps and soaking in the sanctity and splendor. I always felt a connection when I visited, so it quickly became my favorite place in the universe, but I was never able to see a show there. Collectively we have all been affected by the hell of 2020, on top of our own unique personal struggles. This show, getting to travel to a place that a piece of my heart calls home with some of my favorite people and collective Guster family to see my favorite band accompanied by an amazing symphony orchestra in my favorite place on earth… it was transcendent. Part of me still hasn’t caught up with the fact that it happened and I was there. It was a dream come true and one of the best days of my life, and my heart and soul are recharged and overflowing. I love you all, band members and Guster family alike. Thank you.
