Johnny Helps Steve Lawrence Sing "Love Is Here To Stay" | Carson Tonight Show Original Airdate: 11/20/1975 #johnnycarson #thetonightshow #stevelawrence
I think the words Missing Those Days is a understatement. Are these feelings what our parents felt ? Entertainment will never be the same. I wish I was wrong.
Johnny Carson was the best! No one could come close to his greatest. Pure class. It happens that my Father was friends with Steve Lawrence’s older brother Bernie growing up, and Steve Lawrence, tagged along at times to the movies. My Father said he even remembered fun snowball fights in Winter. Steve Lawrence sent a personal note n photo to my Father for his 80th birthday ( at my request.) What a nice man.
There was a term often applied to the giants of the industry in the early days who were all around entertainers: sensational. Collectively and individually, Johnny Carson and Steve Lawrence personified that distinction magnificently.
I had the great honor of having Steve Lawrence perform a swing jazz song I wrote for a children’s show (thanks to our mutual friend Ron Dante who produced the track). He was incredibly kind (as well as incredible).
That's a great little story. My father knew Steve and Edyie somehow. When I was a little boy he would always make me watch them on TV. To collaborate with Steve musically is a precious memory only a few can share. Kudos!
@@artmonk8576 and you know why its partially like that? Think about what has happened to television. Too many businessmen and television is probably second class next to internet. Everything is quick attention span stuff and come in with a loud exciting roar and continued crazy hype. Carson had a chill thing about him that the business would say a full stop no to. He may have been something that helped shaped attitudes back then in some way. The media and entertainment industry on tv might do that. He was chill.
Mr. Carson's success and longevity were epic in nature. Television was still growing, and his ratings were higher a decade into his host of the "Tonight" show than when he first started. Even on the "rare" occasion when he was off. This is almost unheard of. Yes, JC was the best!
I don't think I missed a night of watching Johnny for the entire 30 years he was on TV. It was something we looked forward to at the end of every day and he never failed to make us laugh before bedtime. He's greatly missed.
This is great. I wish they would have included the whole interview with Steve. He sang another song. Now that we are in love. Steve and Eydie were on the tonight show many times. Wish you would post more with Steve and Eydie! Thanks for this.
I saw Steve and Eydie live in concert at the Rosemont Horizon when they opened for Mr. Sinatra in 1991. It was an epic performance. They were consummate pros and entertainers.
Johnny & Steve were best friends, frequent tennis buddies. This is such a classic moment between my one of my favorite singers & my all-time favorite late-night host!
Steve Lawrence could do it all: Sing, Act, Improv. One could tell when Mr. Carson had great admiration for a particular guest. This is a great segment and I greatly appreciate your posting it.
Every time there would be ‘scenes from The Tonight Show’ that were funny this was in the bunch. It’s always been a favorite of mine. We know this was completely ad-lib as Johnny started the song. But knowing both Steve, Johnny and their friendship we knew where it was headed. So so funny! 💕🎶
Was so Blessed to have been able to watch the Johnny Carson show. Before the commies took over everything and did the attack on political correctness we laughed allot. I never went to bed without Johnny first. Peace!
About 4 years ago, there was a video posted of Vic Demon and Steve Lawrence performing medlys of Sinatra songs at a Sinatra Tribute. I can no longer find it, don't know if it has been removed. If anyone has a copy, please post it. It was amazing.
They dont make them like they used to. Classy people. Everything was live. No lip syncing. Nobody swore and talked about body parts. Wholesome, class act entertainment. Our dignity was always held in place. Integrity was all around us. Now? Our society has gone straight into the toilet. Very, very sad.
Johnny actually had a nice voice, but I think he suffered from a lack of confidence with it and almost "stage fright" with singing. In all the years I regularly watched the Tonight Show, I actually saw this episode when it first aired, and it was the only time I remember someone getting Johnny to sing. I will say that just this week, I saw on CZcams a Tonight Show from around 1981 with Robert Goulet, and he and Goulet sang one together too...and again, Johnny did fine. I had the pleasure of seeing Steve & Eydie in Vegas a long time ago, and it was great. Sadly, both have now passed on...like almost all the greats from that era. As talented as many singer-songwriters are nowadays, very, very few have the talent and class of the legends (Sinatra, Sammy Davis, Jr., Perry Como, Steve & Eydie, Goulet, Andy Williams, Tony Bennett, Dean Martin, and just a few more).
I will tell you this I am not cut out to be a trumpet player do play some guitar and bass. No disrespect to Doc or the Tonight Show Band but I cannot simply stand those high trumpet notes there at the end of when Steve and Johnny quit singing. Now Herb Alpert was the best trumpet player in my opinion Herb or his group to me never overplayed their instruments really enjoyed listening to Herb and his band great group by all means and Herb reminded me of the Late Charlie Watts of The Rolling Stones Charlie never to me overplayed the drums he just played what was necessary. To Me Charlie Watts was to the drums what Herb Alpert was to the trumpet. Now when Jay Leno took over The Tonight Show I feel it took a turn towards a different and new era the band was decent and Jay did attract younger viewers and audience now today you don't see the big bands in talk shows I feel it due to a new and younger generation of viewers and audience. Moreover when Letterman started out the 4 piece band of Paul Shaffer was great . To me I'm just not a big swing band person . No disrespect to Trumpet players but I prefer no high wide open notes. Sorry folks but that's just the way I feel . Happy Holidays to you all and take care.
AWESOME! This hopefully will show that same sex people can NEVER be accepted by God Who made the Heavens and the Earth!!! I have NO compunction to Anger God Who made The Heavens and The Earth; I suggest everyone do the same in order to save your souls!
How I miss those days. Talent. Class. Just pure entertainment . RIP Mr Lawrence
Johnny can actually SING!!!! Bravo!
RIP Steve and Jonny❤
Rest in peace Steve Lawrence
Miraculous that they could get thru that bit, singing the song, gazing into each other's eyes, without cracking up. Total pros. RIP Steve Lawrence.
If I were Eydie, I'd have been concerned. They had some serious chemistry there.
Dont think Eddy wants that kind of chemistry 😂😂@@ericholck3914
Oh how I miss those days! Johnny, Steve, the music, it was such a special time & I didn't appreciate it then...but boy, I sure do now!!!
I think the words Missing Those Days is a understatement. Are these feelings what our parents felt ? Entertainment will never be the same. I wish I was wrong.
You can’t be sad or mad watching TV like this. Thank You
Classy, talented guy! I always admired his sounds and style as a young guy! Rest In Peace Steve!!
Steve Lawrence was off-the-charts cool and smooth. Comedy talent, too.
Brilliant.
Best Of The...BEST!!!
He was on Carol Burnett s show....a parody of Sunset Boulevard. He was William Holden.....so funny.
Mr. Lawrence could sing, act ("The 'Blues Brothers"), and "do" comedy ("The Carol Burnett Show") well.

I saw this clip years ago here on youtube. I love Steve Lawrence charming gentleman and a beautiful singer and performer 😍♥️♥️
Johnny Carson was the best at everything he did. NO ONE can even hold a candle to him.
Probably the best singer of all time.
R.I.P. Steve Lawrence.
Wow! That woild be an absolute monster clip. Vic Damone and Steve together is surreal. That should be front and center on the internet.
Johnny is the GOAT.

@@Bigbadwhitecracker Oh yeah he had a few. The one at the time or all of them.
@@Bigbadwhitecracker I think it was Johnny's second wife.

Johnny made late night watching a requirement. Brilliant
Very well said.
The music, the shows, the Times. Great memories. At least I can watch these shows here and now to transport me for awhile.
This was so sweet and so special
Steve is still here at 86 yrs old. Edye left us in 2013.
Eydie
Holy cow that is great!! I dare anyone to be that funny these days. And Steve is so talented.
We miss you ❤

Ms. Eydie appeared in January or February of 1983 and belted out, "After you're gone" that I would love to see again. Thanks for sharing.

There's a famous clip of Johnny singing this song with Pearl Bailey in the very early days of the show.
I remember seeing this the night it aired. Hilarious!
Johnny was amazing! These clowns on the late shows today don't come close to this man's talent!
Such clean and magnificent vocals! Their duet was hilarious, a different time of spontaneous comedy being incredibly entertaining.
That was so good
I miss Johnny so much. So much class. Today's late night idiots are not even on the same planet.
I totally agree....100 %
❤️
And they are damn lucky Johnny isn't still with us!
Agree. Agree. Agree!!
Johnny showed all of us how to live with class, style and that great sense of humor.

Paul Williams wrote this song and asked Jack Jones to record it.
That is a great and useful note. It sounds like a Jack Jones piece.

Eydie Garme was a very lucky woman. Steve Lawrence was a class act.
