I use Logic Pro--I use a wide variety of hard and soft synths.
Software: I use Pigments by Arturia a lot, and a bit of Native Instruments (Kontakt)
Hardware: Minilogue XD, Mother32, Microfreak
A good way to make it more ambient is use of heavy reverbs! Valhalla Supermassive is free. I use that one and Valhalla Shimmer a lot.
