  • FlyWire takes a look at ditching a Bonanza. In particular the Half Moon Bay incident in August 2019.
    / flywire
FlyWire is about exploring flight and the freedom this incredible experience brings us on a personal level. Flying has always captured the imagination and excitement of living life to its fullest. Hi, I'm Scott Perdue. In a former life I flew the F-4 and F-15E, more recently I retired from a major airline. I've written for several aviation magazines over the years, was a consultant for RAND, the USAF, Navy, NASA as well as few others, wrote a military thriller- 'Pale Moon Rising' (still on Kindle). But mostly I like flying, or teaching flying. Some of the most fun I had was with Tom Gresham on a TV show called 'Wings to Adventure". We flew lots of different airplanes all over the country. Now with FlyWire I want to showcase the fun in flying, share the joy and freedom of flight and explore the world with you. Make sure you subscribe if you want to go along for the ride!

Either he put himself and his passengers in danger by taking off knowing his fuel was contaminated, or he staged a ditching for the publicity, putting himself and his passenger in danger. Neither is a good look and bordering on (and possibly being) criminal. Regardless of which, he should lose his license for a time, if not forever. Whatever his motivations, he displayed the kind of recklessness that gets people killed and puts all private pilots in the crosshairs of ill meaning regulators. To say "I am not impressed" is putting it very, very mildly.

When I saw the original video of this ditching posted shortly after it happened, along with the caviler attitude of this guy, who as you pointed out, started taking videos for CZcams within seconds of the ditching and throughout the ordeal, I felt like it was a scam then just as I do today. Within minutes of the ditching, he is videoing himself and his plane sinking into the ocean and showing no anguish or shock about what had just happened. The video seemed to be more important than anything else including his passengers safety. His original video just seems as though it was clearly planned for self promotion purposes. . Interestingly enough, the Cessna pilot who just happened to be there to take videos of the Bonanza ditching, and calling the coast guard, has very recently participated in another fairly big named aviation oriented CZcamsr's videos, who promoted this guys video on his channel and who's videos lately have become more about fame and collecting subscription clicks and likes than promoting a common sense approach to aviation. Like they always say, if it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, it's probably a duck - this guy, in my opinion, is a scam artist who staged this ditching purely for social media self promotion. The story he's created about the condition of the airplane, shows that he's either a really bad pilot or he's covering his ass with regard to the FAA and insurance company.

Scott darling...you are not old...you are awesome. You nailed it! When I first saw the video of the ditching I could not believe the demeanor of the pilot or the woman with him. Neither seemed shook-up or frightened as most people would of been. Those two were so calm, laughing and smiling while filming and seemed to be enjoying their predicament knowing that their friend in the air was keeping a close eye on them and help was on the way. I flew enough with my Dad to know that that's not the behavior of any responsible pilot. It's obvious the entire event was planned so it could be aired on social media. Thanks for showing the clips of this jerks previous antics, that really confirmed it for me.

Its funny you covered this because when it first happened that is exactly what I thought. I used to follow the pilot in the 182 on insta and as soon as he posted it I knew there was something fishy. Also on the recovery with the coast guard you can see that he goea up first leaving the girl in the water. That is the first sign that he is a douche. What kind of man says hey coastguard save me first and leave the girl here in the water until i get in the chopper. Good video and research. In my opinion you're spot on.

Don't get me wrong, he still comes off as a social media-addicted douche... but I don't think it was his choice to be rescued first.

I hope he losses his right to fly planes because the next stunt, someone will be dead because of it. If found to be a stunt, this would leave a stain on the safety record for general aviation. G'day,
    Yikes...!
Why would the Aeroplane's Hull Insurance Provider not be interested in contracting some Divers to raise the submerged Bonanza & look into the Fuel Filters..., to see if any of that Fuel-Contamination information was accurate.
The whole thing reminds me of Michael John Roberts, a Schoolteacher too young for Vietnam who wanted to be a Chopper Jockey.
When selling Joyrides in a Hughes 300-c, he used to wear his Uniform with Beeper on Belt when attending the Aero Club Bar on his day off - to look the part, in 1979.
In 1980 he started "Koskiusco Helicopters and was renting a Jetranger to sling-load Fenceposts to a Fencing Contractor, in Mountain-Goat Country ; & after Lunch he tried "one more load" without either Refuelling or dipping the Tanks, so when he was 200 Ft over the Valley at 5 MPH, between Ridges he ran Tank-Dry and tried to Autorotate from too low - withesses said his Main Blades were stopped as he hit the Ground...
After emerging from The Room For Broken Aviators (there is one, for the whole Sydney Basin, serving 4 million people - it's at the Royal North Shore Hospital...!), MJR was deep in Debt, so un 1981 he tendered a low Bid to ferry a Cessna 210 Station-Air from 'Frisco to Sydney - and he won the job.
But MJR couldn't afford a set of approved Hazleton Ferry Tanks, so he therefore cobbled up some Home-Grown Setup of his own, and duly set off...; but when he was 3 hours out of Hawaii with 5 hours of Fuel in the Wing Tanks - his Vapour Lock disclosed itself and forced him to yelp
    "M' Aidez...!"
and then he alighted, dead-stick, and awaited the US Coast Guard to arrive, which they did, after 17 hours.
Upon seeing the approaching Rescue Vessel, MJR was too silly to thunk of using his Crash-Axe to hole the empty Ferry Tanks, and this sink the Evidence...; so the Coast Guard winched his silly mess onboard, and then the FAA looked at all his Uncertified Plumbing...; and so not only did he then owe the Cessna's Insurers for a wet Aeroplane all knocked out of shape,, but also - the Coast Guard billed him for the Search & Rescue... (Contributory Negligence, I think it was...).
Then, in 1982, because he was REALLY into the Finance Company, they lent himthe money to reboot Koskiusco Helicopters, with another Jetranger.
A Contract was obtained to carry a Widescreen Movie Camera, Cameraman, & Director & Sound Recorder, to film Wild (Feral) "Brumby" Horses, from Treetop Height, in the Snowy Mountains...; and rather than renting an expensive Cantileverwd Camera-Mount, to put the Camera out beside the Fuselage - to remove the Fuselage Nose from the Frame..., MJR tied a Cargo-Net between the Skids & induced the Cameraman to lie down under the Jetranger's Belly, with the Camera.
If the Camera had been running, actually filming the Horses, if MJR had been being told to go,
    " Lower, Faster, Closer !"
by the Producer then it would have been less ridiculous...; but when he hit the Powerlines which he didn't see, MJR was returning to the Airport, the Film was in the Can, but he was
"demonstrating how Helicopters used to be operated flying low, in the 'Nap Of The Earth' region, the better to avoid Enemy Gunfire..."
So he admitted at his Trial.
MJR went to Gaol for 7 years, on 3 counts of Manslaughter.
Wannabe Pilot Heroes can be seriously dangerous people, especially for the people who fly with them, or lend them money to feed to their Delusions of Adequacy...(!).
{There, but for the Grace of Godtheory, goeth I...; seriously !}.
    Such is life.
    Have a good one.
    ;-p
    Ciao !

I borrowed a term from the special forces community - The 'FATAL FUNNEL' now they use the term for when your person is at risk in front of a door or entrance when you go to breech it in the shape of an oil / water funnel faning out towards the operator for obvious reasons relating to hot flying metal objects approaching with considerable velocity and body parts held in their trajectory forthwith. Now I apply that to initiating a string of movements, a decision, failing to take a decision that untimately dooms the craft + occupants to a fatal or harmful outcome. And once bad call #1 is made, there is rapidly less and less time for flyboy to escape from the immenant funnel. flying in ice without proper de-icing gear, failing to turn on a fuel pump, flying too high and succumbing to CO2 poisoning etc etc knock yourself out.. It could take 2 mins, 10 mins, 2hr, 4hr until you get sucked into the vortex of doom from when you make absent minded decision #1 please feel free to borrow at will if it should raise awareness.
