i was at one of these performances - possibly this one (have to check my store of programs). unfortunately i was almost totally unschooled in opera, had little interest; but i do remember her presence on stage - she was like fire. a bonus for a star struck 21 year old: the queen mother was in the audience. went to the stage door, foolishly didn't get an autograph, but there she was in chinchilla down to her toes. memories...
You are a very lucky man!
For all those that are criticizing Maria Callas and 1959 singing Medea please stop! Every Great opera singer only has 10 good years. End of discussion. Stop making those negative comments about Medea 1952 etc etc even a 1959 no one could sing Medea like Maria Callas. Please stop it you're acting like children. Arnold Bourbon Amaral ALSO THANK YOU CALLASFAN FOR POSTING THESE INCREDIBLE PIECES WERE TRULY GRATEFUL🌎🌏🌍😉🎼🎵🎶🎧🍷👍👍👍
People are entitled to express opinions and criticize performances. "Children" stamp their feet and demand everyone do what they want them to do.
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
here LA divina STILLS CREATE ELECTRICITY and her dramaturgy was even better and more matured
thank you #CallasFan
Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. I'm a 64 year old professional musician, Italian American, and a lifelong opera lover and I dislike everything I've ever heard by Callas. I admire her artistry, but detest her three voices. Yes, she sang with three distinct voices. And her Media may be effective, but she sings it like it's a verismo potboiler like Tosca.
Arnold... you are right..10 years is about all the vocal cords can stand.. almost everyone starts the decline after this time. Some have 15.... but we all get old...!
After listening to this, how can anyone in his or her right mind find fault with such a magnificent artist? She makes us all tremble.
How did anyone leave Callas' Medea performances without fear, trembling, disturbances in the soul...nightmares even?? This woman is a terror!
Or tears. It's one of the most tragic roles in opera history and Callas does it incredible justice.
Funny that you say that. I remember reading (years ago) on a yt video of a Callas Medea performance a comment by a woman (or rather an acquaintance relating her experience) who had watched her live in the role, recalling she had nightmares on several nights after the performance (I think it was because of Callas's "Medea" eyes and facial expressions).
@@judasiscariot6133 czcams.com/video/NjowD48DK28/video.html
Yes , That eyes and facial expression are fire
Indeed
The play is scary
Just listening to her I can imagine her playing on stage... Her movements, her looks, her eyes... In the end It seems that she is possessed by a demon ! By the ghost of Medea herself ! It is impossible that this woman was a simple human being.
It is incredible! I cannot believe I hear Callas' voice! And the performance is one of the most passionate and dramatic ones I have ever heard! Epic!!!
Tibor Pintér this is not callas just a ridiculous montage
Washington de Souza you're not correct. This is 1959 CALLAS not 1952. Listen to The Voice. Arnold Bourbon Amaral
Washington de Souza WTH are you talking about?....🤔
@@washingtondesouza7104 Are you dumb ????? it's definitely MARIA CALLAS
Absolutely phenomenal! Media was the first role that FINALLY caused me (MANY years ago) to FINALLY not only appreciate Callas' great artistry, but to love her as my all time favorite singer! This role caused me to "get" her, and after that, every role I heard her I'm was amazing! THANK YOU for posting!
i am Greek...and very very very proud for the best Greek soprano of all time MARIA CALLAS (ΜΑΡΙΑ ΚΑΛΟΓΕΡΟΠΟΥΛΟΥ full Greek name....)
Panos how nice for you. Being Greek it's not the ultimate nationality. My wife is 1/4 Greek one-fourth Croatian one fourth British Isles 1/4 Eastern European. If your did your DNA no one is complete Greek Spanish French Italian we all come from the Caucasian race. There's only three races black mongoloid Caucasian. All Europeans from Scandinavia all the way to Greece and Turkey are Caucasian. Thank you my friend let's just enjoy la Davina were the great artists that she was. Sincerely ARNOLD BOURBON AMARAL
@@arnoldamaral7406Sorry but the greek dna has to with the greek earth.it has nothing to do with other races or dna. There's also nò comparison with an Italian or Turkish face.....The intelligence ,the understanding of every situation is totally different.i have lived in Athens ,Paris ,Perugia,Rome,Munich & Melbourne , so i can have an...opinion ,about who reacts better while facing difficulties or how to find solutions.Greek brain is unique , even if everybody now wants to prove the opposite.
And you are compeletely right to be proud of it....
The best soprano ever, and there will never be another Callas again
La Divina clearly assuring us why she deserves that superior title. She was THE superlative artist! She brought the score -- libretto and music -- to life with a musical sense of interpretation not heard She also took the female characters in all of the operas she performed and showed them as women -- not just a character. BRAVA RIP
Que sonido tan limpio!!
Es verdaderamente sorprendente la nitidez. Muchas gracias
That classic picture right there is a proof that Callas was the ultimate Medea !
Her arms and hands extending resembling some other worldly alien looking out to the world with a look that would turn anything into stone. Great production and singing.
"Io Medea" Toute la tragedie en deux mots ça donne des frissons!
This Callas addict joins all the other viewers in a HEARTFELT THANK YOU for sharing this amazing video. Wonderful sound, amazing cast, exquisite performance.
Amazing!
Please let me add my heartiest thanks to those who've already offered theirs. What you are doing here is incredible, but I have to believe my own ears. The clarity of the sound, the phenomenal cast, Callas at her greatest in both voice and interpretation, the vivid presence of a live performance-these all stagger belief! Please continue your amazing work for this fan and so many others.
unbelievable!!! bravo callas. this is just unimaginable
Callas voice is in a magnificent shape, with its tremendous power and expression.
Awesome, and good sonics too !
Thank you so much for posting
Complimenti! Saluti Roberto Falconi
Fantastic fantastic sound. Bravo!! Great job!! Thanks a million.
Wow wow wow ! (and we are fussy audiophiles). Brilliant job. Deep gratitude !
IT's so interesting to compare these Medeas with her earlier ones. At this point, she started off less savage, less primal in order to make the arc of Medea's journey more interesting. The Scala Medeas, for example, were ferocious and frightening from the start of the opera. She was always refining her interpretations!
Eternamente MARIA CALLAS.
This a wonderful Recording!
This is opera!
Thank’s Morgan for your comment. You are just right.this is a fully wonderfull recording yes yes and this is opera ! The first opera I wanted to ear after just recovering at home after beeing hospitalised from Covid hypoxemia pneumopathy. Bravo.
Medea was premiered in 1797, a revolutionary piece at that time. The problem with this great opera, it requires a top class cast.
Reminds me of a quote. Who was it that said Il Trovatore is an easy opera to mount? All you need are the four greatest singers in the world.
Thank you. This is certainly Callas's role...I even wonder, and I hope that I am recalling correctly that de Stefano who said he would stand in the wings just to watch Callas. His appreciation for her how "she would sing like a man" meaning she attacked into her music and further, he knew he was watching a history being made. Her technical accuracy is just scarey to how here she does deliver her musical line that does tell the drama. 🌹
La divina Maria Callas 💖
Unbelievable clear sound! Callas has been a musical heroine of mine for 30 years. Thank you for this!
Dear Turnip...I thank you from the bottom of my heart for this MEDEA with the one and only Callas.
your medea is great, callas fan. never heard better. congratulations.
Cordiali saluti.
Amazing! MIL GRACIAS for posting this recording. Overlord, You Rule!
How sad video recordings didn’t come earlier to record such performances totally ! Callas was great and her likes as Medea/Norma etc. will never be repeated !
There is on CZcams a video of the 2nd act of Tosca, with Ms. Callas and Tito Gobbi, from ROH.
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR SHARING THIS DIVIN PERFORMANCE OF LA UNICA DIVINA MARIA CALLAS. THANK YOU
I love all Callas Medea performances...the Scala for the epic sound, the Dallas for the freedom and passion, but really, this one may be the very best...the sonics, she is in wonderful late career voice. Only Callas can make it seem like she is "speaking" the role, even in the most passionate and difficult phrases.
Callas definiu e lacrou o papel!
Ela é a maior soprano do século XX!
I agree. Medea has become my favorite of her roles and I think she always sounded great in it bc she let her whole voice out and didn't try to refine it to fit the character. It's hard for me to criticize her in any role since I find her art the most fascinating and thing thing ever but I do theorize that the holding back for certain characters may be the main contributor to her "decline".
Medea is the role for me that really exemplifies her creativity most.
Thank you for posting this!
Overture: 0:19
Act 1: 07:16
Act 2: 56:17
Act 3: 1:40:35
Have tried listening to other sopranos performing this role, but NONE come within a galaxy of the perfection that is the Callas Medea! My heartfelt gratitude to you for sharing this monumental recording.
Oh my goodness I have been wanting to hear this for the longest time! Didn't even know it had been released! Only at the overture and yet I know great things are coming, she loved Rescigno I believe; and Vickers in 1959?! I'm so excited thank you so much
Lei era e sarà unica....Callas.Fantastic Sound!!!!Grazie
Fantastica, grazie per questo bel regalo 👍
Thanks so much for all your hard work. These recordings are so great. Thank you for sharing.
Man, you are THE best!! Thanks so much for all you do!!
+Brsbeach thank you :) i do what i can, and what i do is for Maria's memory!
Divine Callas !!
People who were born in 1940, in my opinion, were really the luckiest.
They lived to witness and enjoy the live performances of Callas, Piaf, Um Kulthoum, Fayrouz, Elvis, Sinatra, The Beatles, Dalida, ending up with Celine Dion.
Today's generation, myself included, is the most unlucky one.
Thanks a lot for this file of such wonderful audio quality.
Your channel is heaven.
Anas Syriano hello I was born in 1950 December. I saw the Beatles live in Dodger Stadium 1966 45000 people. I was 15 years old. I also saw Joan Baez at 16 Jimi Hendrix Janis Joplin The Mamas & the Papas The Rolling Stones Sonny and Cher just to name a few. When my daughter was a teenager we saw REM The Cranberries Radiohead Morrissey New Kids on the Block LOL she was 12 years old. I saw. LEONTYNE PRICE IN concert 1975 with my wife and her best friend June. If you are selective they're still great artist to be seen. 5 years ago who went back east to see the Portuguese singer MARIZA she was incredible. 2 years ago my sister had a bout with cancer so we took her to see MARIZA in San Francisco. She has an incredible voice and beautiful stage presence Etc just like leontyne price her CDs do not do them Justice. Explore other genres there's great artists out there not just in the United States. Thank you for listening my friend I'm 4th generation American. And I enjoy all types of music my playlist is over a hundred fifty artists. Sincerely ARNOLD BOURBON AMARAL
Turnipoverlord many thanks for the wonderful recordings that you share on your channel , I congratulate sending you a hug ! tito.-
OMG the sound of this GREAT
Much better than the CDs I bought years ago…
Thank you SO much for this gem.
Thank You Turnipoverlord for sharing this MAGNIFICENT recording of Medea! A friend of mine was offered tickets to this performance, but he foolishly turned the offer down... Oh, what I would have given to see Callas live as Medea !!!
Giottoni. I envy your friend for being offered the tickets but how foolish he was to refuse them. I queued all night in Floral Street to get my tickets but it was worth every minute of it. I saw two of those performances and they are still vivid in my memory. Unforgettable!!!! The first glimpse of her on the extreme right of the stage covered in her cloak with only her wide eyes showing declaiming “Io Medea” were chilling and made one’s hair stand on end! Amazing memories even after all these years……
@@Ariadne-cg4cq thank you for sharing this memory with us! Luckily, her genius is such that even just hearing one of her performances is enough to see it brought to life, quite vividly - and that "Io? Medea!" is definitely chilling - I always imagine a sunlit scene at the beginning of the opera, with thunderclouds rolling in and the temperature dropping when Medea enters... But to have actually seen her! I'd have gladly queued all night for the privilege, too.
This is really really Great! Thank you so much for this upload dear turnipoverlord. It made my day, week, year & decade :) Kind regards form the Netherlands.
amazing sound !
Thank you very much for the posting
Astonishing.....who else can sing Medea today ? I wish I could have been older to be there in 1959.....
Just awesome! Thank you!
thank you, thank you.
Thank you so much for letting us share this stunning performance..This is art, not just music. One of the very best of her whole carrier. She was unique. One must study her art, not just listen. There is plenty of beautiful music and singers to listen to, but Callas is a study in art. She makes me weep. She has what the Italians call"Tinta melancholica"
XN in S.F.
Callas is that rarity: a true devoted artist above everything!
@@ferrantepallas yes. A truly great servant of art. La Divina!
Thank you so much dear turnipoverlord. for uploading this and all your hard work to give us such beautiful gems.
Seeing as EMI is only in it for the money and can't be bothered to do more than once again (so-so) 'remaster' their old 'remasters' from often inferior sources, your channel is a real godsend. As to later Callas 'in decline' - she was still an eagle among chickens, so there!
This is fantastic! I would love to have you do your magic to the Florence, the Scala, and the Dallas Medeas. I don't think anyone will ever sing this music as she did.
Shahrdad none of this planet. Maybe in an alternate universe! ARNOLD BOURBON AMARAL
Maria sempre será o meu ídolo e a minha heroína!
I am discovering Cherubini, including his sacred music, and I find this just terrific. How this is not more widely known and performed is just so surprising.
Thank you for posting this! It’s amazing quality sound for this time period. My dear Greek aunt Stella Gerguntas loved seeing her at the Chicago Lyric Opera. I sure wish she had taken me. But she had no way of knowing I was going to be a singer and absolutely love opera.
The contrasting darkness of the opening phrases-baleful, full of “la pitié et la peur”, followed by the exquisite lyricism of the cantilena-is the DNA of the Callas art.
Thank you turnipoverlord... really wonderful.
FANTASTIC!!!!!
Beautiful
Fantastique
incredible sound indeed!!!!
Really GREAT SOUND!!! Callas is Medea!
da brividi!!!! scovolgente!!!
Astonishingly, the Met Opera had never performed Medea until this season. I attended the last of the performances this past weekend, and while the soprano (Sondra Radvonovsky) wasn't quite in Callas' league, she was just a small notch below - and was appropriately rewarded with a raucous standing ovation when the curtain fell. A wonderful night of opera.
exquisita
thank you so very much!!!!!!!!!!
its like you were at a last night's performance and had it recorded on minidisc :D
+george pangeo if i had actually seen Maria perform anything live, i think the pleasure would kill me!
+turnipoverlord hahahha same here...and it has always been a dream of mine....if only...just for a few minutes...
+turnipoverlord No it wouldn't. But you would be on cloud nine for several days!!! I DID see this performance and a few others besides and here I am to tell the tale. But they were extraordinary experiences, and have spoiled me for any other performances of Norma, Anna Bolena, Lucia, Traviata and Medea that I have seen since. I am still expecting to see performances of that level but in vain. Nothing of that calibre since that time. Not even close. And I am getting on now and don't expect to see anything like it before I pop my clogs!!! Nothing on the horizon lets me think that there is such a possibility!
By the way, the way you have cleaned up the sound is fantastic. All the previous recordings of Medea I heard were awful. Dreadful sound!! You are a wizz!!.
you are so fortunate !!!! pure perfection is what i think i would feel watching her on stage too....fulfillment and joy!!!! i am pleased that there are her recordings that can give me a glimpse of what she could accomplish vocally and dramatically. Sopranos today cannot sing the repertoire she sung. Even if they try, they cant, because of the years of practice they need for each role, and this could take them forever... :D Assolutas are extinct :D
Enter Medea: 37:18
Schön! Sehr schõn! The Best of Callas!
jon vickers was amazing as jason... but Maria was superb she is Medea the recitativo at the begining of the second act is amazing and the summon of the dea are breathtaking
In the first production at LaScala, Margherita Wallman, the director, wanted her to sing “Numi, venite a me’ lying down. Callas balked! It’s impossible! But opening night, with Bernstein in the pit, there she was on the floor, trying to blow the roof off with that roaring, malevolent sound! She succeeded as she did here!
Spectacular. I’ve seen this opera once so far, in a truly abysmal production in Wexford. But I’m going to see it again in October at the Met, with Sondra Radvanovsky in the title role. If it’s even a quarter as good as this I’ll be happy. In addition to a superhuman soprano, it needs very energetic conducting (like it gets here) if it’s to be brought to life. Hopefully it’ll be a cleansing experience after the trauma of Wexford.
I too will be at the Met's production! I love Miss Radvanovsky and Polenzani ( who I saw in his debut at the MET a while back) looking forward to it!!!
See you there!
I’m on the West coast, going to see it transmitted from the Met at our local performing arts centre. Thanks, Technology!!😃
Understandable, Wexford's a dump and Médée is far too demanding for its limited resources and ambitions.
My favorite line is where Medea says...." Damn Hymns! ... lol
Delicious!
MAGNIFICENT!!! i'D HAVE GIVEN 1/2 MY LIFE TO HAVE BEEN THERE ON THE NIGHT!!(EVEN THOUGH IT WAS 3 YEARS BEFORE MY BIRTH!!) BUT THANKS TO TURNIPOVERLORD....I DON'T HAVE TO!!!....HA HA HA X
Yes - splendid recorded sound. John Ardoin in 'The Callas Legacy' complains about too slow tempi and a lack of energy in Callas' singing, compared to the same production in Dallas the year before. Perhaps if Rudolph Bing had fired her just before this performance rather than the one recorded in Dallas, things might have had more 'oomph' . Callas claimed she sang her best when angry!
Some if Ardoin's comments on various performances in that original book were colored by the sonics of the recordings he could get at the time. This is an incredibly exciting performance. He also complained about the Paris 1958 concert, but that was before the films in fine sound had been discovered. Callas herself listed the Paris broadcast as one of her biggest triumphs. On balance, with these sonics and this cast and conductor, this may be her finest Medea.
brava
You are a hero! Do you know of any Callas recordings of comparable sound quality of Spontini's La Vestale and of Verdi's Macbeth?
I would love a solid recording of La Vestale! An underrated and treacherous role that La Callas perfected!
@@crybabyland The Opera Depot release of Le Vestale is in very good sound. Far superior to Opera D’oro and others.
At some point, you just have to accept people are going to feel how they want to feel. Nothing you can do about it. For me ‘59 Callas is even more intense than ‘53 Callas but whatever. I just enjoy how marvelous she was at any stage. But that’s just me
Médée--"Medea" in Italian--is a French language opéra-comique by Luigi Cherubini. The libretto by François-Benoît Hoffmann (Nicolas Étienne Framéry) was based on Euripides' tragedy of Medea and Pierre Corneille's play Médée.
this is my all time favourite opera!!!
it is exactly what opera is about....expression, inpersination of a caracter.
callas was often blaimed for an ugly voice....how can you credile here if you sing Medea with a beautiful voice??
holy!!!
From where source is this recording (I mean where can I buy it in physical format)?
♥♥♥♥
Medea seems to be an odd role that fits no one’s voice well except Callas’s. Even in the 1961 La Scala performance, where her voice is in clear decline, the music presents her voice favourably. She is strong and imposing here. BUT one can still hear some of the structural issues that would contribute to her voice’s collapse. In particular, whereas she used to sing her lower-middle notes with clear vowels and in the chest, here, she sings them awkwardly, with far less chest and clarity and far more nasality. A clear example of this is the very last phrase at ‘Al sacro fiume IO VO!’ Compare how she sings that here with how sings them in earlier live recordings…. Still, would we not all kill to have experienced this performance in the house live?
sconvolgente
This performance is pure gold, thank you for uploading it.
Is it possible to know which recording company has this clear recording?
Because I would like to buy a cd of this marvelous performance with this perfect sound.
Thank you
