  • ** Update: A little more than a month after his rescue, on 30th August 2011, tragically Mumbushi, the smallest baby in our Nairobi Nursery, passed away. Cutting the first molars is always problematical for infant elephants and can bring on a loss of appetite, diarrheoa and fevers. For Mumbushi, this proved too much. Rest in peace Mumbushi. Mumbushi's rescue:
On 5th July 2011, the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust received a call that an orphan baby elephant needed their help. This film tells the story of the SWT's role in collecting the little elephant, Mumbushi, and bringing him back to the SWT's elephant orphanage in Nairobi National Park. Where he can receive the 24hr a day specialist care he needs, supported by other orphan elephants, if he is to overcome the physical and emotional trauma he's experienced.
Established in 1977, the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust (SWT) operates the world’s most successful orphan elephant rescue and rehabilitation program, rescuing and hand-rearing orphaned elephants and other animals that have lost their mothers, all too often as a result of human activity. But we do much more than this. Through our Aerial, Anti-Poaching and Mobile Veterinary Units, we safeguard the natural environment and provide immediate assistance to wild animals in need. We also secure irreplaceable wilderness areas so that animals will always have space to roam and work with local partners and communities to ensure people and wildlife can live alongside one another.
