The Fabulous Alfa Romeo Giulia TZ

- Launched in prototype form at the Turin Motor Show in November 1962, the Giulia TZ shared only a few components with the family saloon it was named after. The letters TZ stood for "Tubolare Zagato," from the tubular chassis frame and the Milanese firm which designed and manufactured the body.
Penned by Zagato's designer Ercole Spada, the Giulia TZ's swoopy aluminum body was designed to minimize drag, and it's characterized by its sharply cut-off tail, recessed and usually finished in contrasting black.
Due to the Giulia TZ's lengthy development and the time it took to build the 100 cars needed for homologation in the GT Class, the model's first complete season was 1964, and it was quite a successful one, with class wins in the Sebring 12h, the Targa Florio and the Le Mans 24h, just to name a few. That year, the TZs even managed two outright wins in the Coupe Des Alpes and the Tour De Corse, yet Alfa Romeo and Autodelta were already onto something new, a second-generation model called TZ2.
The TZ2 was a much more specialized machine, never meant to be sold to the public, with a lowered chassis frame and a sharp new body made from fiberglass instead of aluminum, shaving 40 Kg from the car's weight.

Your videos are amazing . Really well presented ,professional and a quality content. I dont know how your channel doesnt have millions of subscribers
Thank you very much for your kind words. I admit I'm a bit disappointed about my results, given the effort I make to produce my own footage and the genuine knowledge I share. That's partly why I haven't been posting lately, as I'm focusing on activities that make me money. However, I'm grateful for the subscribers and viewers I do have, as you all seem to be enthusiastic and knowledgeable. I may never have a million subscribers, but sure, I have the best ones!
glorious
My Favourite Alfa of all time!!!
Breathtaking!
It is such a pitty that in our technocratic era there is no place for emotion any more... 😢
Thank you for this splendid episode, Matteo!
Thank you for watching! Well, there still are a lot of great cars today, I believe.
So you want personality? Cool. Here's a giant iPad on the dashboard.

When I see these beautiful "gorgeous" works of art my heart skips a beat. Alfa was truly ahead of it's time. Your channel is by far the best I have ever see on Alfa cars! It's criminal you don't have more subscribers.
Thank you very much!!!
I'm very grateful for all the following this channel has, it's quite large already and I'm always been about quality rather than quantity. Read comments like yours fills me with joy and motivation to keep doing more and better!
Thank you for the video, Matteo
My pleasure! Thank you for watching!
The TZ2 is well deserved of it's title as the mini 250 GTO
Always a ALFA fan since 1970 when I bought a new spider and kept it for 40 years. Now have a 2015 4C Launch Edition. Had a race car for a while also. I have always lusted after a TZ. When I lived in California I had a couple of friends that had TZs.....the one with the longest history was owned by Marnix Delinius that he drove in lots of vintage events. His was also featured in the sports car series about different marques....in this case the one about ALFA. I remember when John Norman loaned his GTU Transam race engine from his car to run at a Laguna Seca vintage race that featured Cobras. The TZ embarrased the Cobras altough of course having a very good driver helped.
My favorite design when I was 2 year old and it still is... 58 years later!
Man! Those Alfas!!!
Wonderful cars & a delightful video - just a teensy erratum at 2:11, the engine is of course behind the front axle.
Ouch, yes you’re right! Well, glad you enjoyed it anyways, thank you!!!
Italian pride!!!
To me the TZ1 and 2 are still the greatest cars Alfa has ever made .
That fantastic tubular frame dressed by those georgious Zagato body's says it all .
Whit just a humble 1.6 liter engine , capable of over 210 km per hour is still very fast 60 years later !
These are not just cars , these are pieces of art that can also move .
They are printed in my hart and mind for ever .
❤❤❤❤❤
The TZ2 and Canguro are two of my all time favourite car designs. Simply beautiful. 🍀♥️
So beautiful, I could cry. 😢
Oh Hello...long time and good to see another good one thank you. Beautifully filmed and narrated.🙏
Glad you enjoyed it, thank you!!!
Great and very informative, thanks a lot. Hope we'll hit 20k subscribers this year 😉 Ciao 🙋♂️
Let's hope. It'd mean that true Alfisti are increasing
@@studiocalder818 Fully agree 👍
Great video and very informative. I learn a lot about Alfa from yourself. Keep them coming. 👍👍
Thanks, will do!
My dear friend, you hit a soft spot for me this week!!!
My love for the TZ1 and lust for the TZ2 has grown even more after watching this remarkably informative quick documentary!!!
The main spot of my dream garage, will always be for a TZ!
And despite the striking contrast of the back side, I would love to have one in black!!!
You just made my Easter holidays more beautiful! Thank you!
Thank you very much! Your kind comment has made my day :)
These cars grew out of the Giulietta SZ and the Coda Tronca. There was an owner, Fritz Dernberger in Vancouver, BC who had an SZ and TZ1 in his garage around 1981. He raced the TZ at the old Westwood track. They were just as mind blowing then as they are now. He sold them when they became too valuable to keep and enjoy.
Zwoooopy design, haha i love it! Kind regards from a proud 916 spider owner!
There was a man who owned a TZ in a city not far from me 20 or so years ago. He was a member of the state Alfa club, and it would surprise me when I would go to a local Alfa track event and see this incredibly rare car running among the relatively common other Alfas. I thought it was a beautiful car, then I saw a TZ2 (race number 130) at Pebble Beach and was blown away.
Beautiful
I just love your channel and eagerly watch everything you put out. I am an Alfisti exceptionale.
Thank you!!!!
Another great video. I just read you are closing down due to other commitments. I wish you well and thank you for many very enjoyable videos.
I've just closed the memberships, not the channel. Rest assured that I'll keep making more and better videos!
Simply Stunning😍
It really is!
To my eyes, the TZ2 is much more beautiful than the Kangaroo and the most beautiful Alfa there is. Such perfect proportions and purposeful badassness.
Yes, the TZ2 definitely has an “attitude” to it that the other lack
Another important and informative video again. Thank you for your kind work.
Glad you enjoyed it, thank you!!
Pure lust. I'd not heard of these beauties before. Thanks.
Tz2 remind me to Bizzarini 5300 gt
Beautiful car
The Bizzarrini is one topic I'd like to cover in the future, by the way. Hope I'll get to film one!
Splendid as always! TZ1 looks more balanced to me than TZ2.
The TZ1 is daintier, prettier… While the TZ2 has more of an “attitude” to it… Like both of them, but I prefer the TZ1 too
5:12 Noticed the number plate from Udine where Autodelta was originally from. Autodelta will move to Milano in 1964
Beautiful video and breathtaking cars, or shall I say 'poetry in motion'? Damn, only 9 specimen of the TZ2 ever produced? I've seen one race in Belgium last year...
Yes indeed, the TZ2 was never meant to be sold to privateers, and its short racing career meant few were made. Thank you for your appreciation!
I do love learning about these beautiful, and wonderfully designed machines.
Thank you!!!
que bella
The TZ1 is my all-time favorite car. My absolutely "holy grail" top number 1 spot on my list. I wish someone built a convincing replica of it. I would build one in a heartbeat
It is indeed ripe for a replica project… But I wonder if there would be enough demand to justify the effort
Thanks for presenting this awesome engine! What a beauty, and how advanced for its time.
The TZ2 is reminiscent of the 250GTO. I adore this car and have lusted after it most of my life. Great video my friend
It is indeed a mini-GTO yes. Thank you very much, glad you enjoyed it!
Beautiful cars, videos and your explanation are the best around. Living in the states as a teenager in the 60s then young adult in the 70s most of my friends liked American muscle cars, not me, I liked the Italian style cars. At the time all I could afford were the fiats. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
I’m glad you appreciate this, as making Italian motoring history accessible to the rest of the world has always been the point of this channel, and the reason why I chose to speak in English.
@@Matteo_Licata thank you, your English is very good.
Another great video Matteo. I just purchased 186 of 190 1994 alfa spider ce. Resto project.
That’s cool! Those were the very last Spiders! Is it in bad shape?
@@Matteo_Licata Needs paint(green) and some minor body work Wood inserts not great. Needs new top. Needs new tires. Engine turns but I'm waiting for crank sensor.
It’ll be a cool car when finished! The Spider is a box I’ll have to tick myself sooner or later
Beautiful - Great review
Thank you!!
I love the TZ’s…. I have a few scale models of 1:43 size. TZ2 and TZ3 etc. Gorgeous shapes.
Never realised the engine was mounted at an angle. My father was offered an SZ, the 1960s one, back in the 1980s for less money than a nearly new Alfetta GTV6, unfortunately he chose the latter but hindsight is a wonderful thing....
Well, a GTV6 wasn't a bad thing either!
That was one of the the things that flummoxed me on Ant Anstead's build of his replica 159, I thought surely an angled drivetrain can't be ideal.
I never realized that the TZ was so small. It weighs a fraction of my 1980 Ford Fiesta.
They’re beautiful though. I have a 1:32 scale slot car in my collection.
Why are Alfas designed by Pininfarina always much more delicate and prettier than the others?
To me they capture the sprit of Alfa the best too.
I’d say that applies in general to Pininfarina’s designs over Bertone’s… The latter tended to go bolder, brasher than Pininfarina usually did
Great video, would love to see someone make a video like this about the Maserati A6G ;)
Thank you! I’ll see what I can do ;)
It would be nice build a prototype of the chassis on display with a straight 6 or the V8 from the 33 stradale.
Amazing piece of automotive history, and great video
Thank you!!!
You can start producing that Bertone Canguro now and it still will look actual! Just sublime!
Yes indeed!
It is sublime. I assume it was the basis for at least some of the design cues for the Montreal (like the side vents)? And who designed the Porsche 928? I have a feeling they might have been inspired by the Canguro too.
😍😍😍😍😍😍
That Bertone special is gorgeous, origin of the Montreal side slot vents?
Well spotted :)
Yes indeed, the Montreal’s slot vents did originate on the Canguro
Have you ever covered this designer and builder "MONOMILLE GT" , version 1963 -1965, built at Sibona & Basano
Not yet, but I’ll research it and see what I can do ;)
This car looks just like Carroll Shelby's 64 Daytona. Actually looks like one of GMs badge engineering efforts though I'm sure they aren't related. Love the Bertone body while the Pininfarina body looks wildly out of proportion to the degree I wouldn't have thought they were even on the same frame. The prototype is definitely the best looking of group.
Fantastico. I have to admit being a Lancia man at heart even if I have 4 Alfas as well! The racing pedigree of the Alfas is fascinating. I wish I lived in Italy in the early 60’s to have experienced being involved with these magnificent beautiful cars.
The TZ2 is beyond my descriptive abilities. I had a strong thought of why no one has tried to produce them as a modern kit car. Tubular chassis and fibreglass body should make it straightforward I think? I’m sure it could be a huge success. So what has stopped anyone doing it?
A kit car replica of the TZ2 would indeed be feasible for a specialized company… I don’t know why it hasn’t been done already, to be honest.
Awesome video. Now can you do one on the 33 Stradale?
I’m preparing a video about the whole 33 story for this weekend, watch this space ;)
@@Matteo_Licata Awesome.
The TZ is gorgeous, but in its day was regarded as being too heavy to be successful
170hp from a 1.6 NA, is relatively high even for current standards
It was. But I must add that it was in race tune, with an unrestricted intake and exhaust and an aggressive cam profile.
Autodelta factory were TZ racing cars were built was based in Udine Italy
Yes indeed, Feletto Umberto
The drawing of the tubular chassis is different to the TZ chassis on display. The drawing is not a true space frame.
Bella 🤩 Alfa made so mush interesting projects, too bad FIAT buried this creativity under massive rationalism.
You really should start putting NSFW warnings in these videos. Its *required* by YT terms of service. I mean, look at 7:14!
😂😂😂
Lancia ten times better!!!!
Got plenty of Lancia videos on the channel too!
@@Matteo_Licata :-) you're right! And I love my Alfa too! In Autum I'm back in Milano, proud to be a Visconti!
