These artists were one-hit wonders because they only had one top 30 / top 40 hit on the pop charts in major record markets (mainly the US or the UK). This does not mean that they weren't great musicians. Some of them still had great careers outside mainstream culture, or had success as songwriters for other artists, or scored several hits in countries other than the US / the UK.
😎 good evening all 📻 I remember most of the song some of them should be one hit wonder I cant believe tell Laura I Love her made this list
I remember almost all of them. Guess I'm getting old...
I got em all from readers digest off TV about 4 months ago only place I buy from ,Woodstock, 50 60,&70 rock
I had the 45 of lots of these. I still remember most of the lyrics.
AM 📻.......👍
Yeah, me, too.
I remember the songs but not who performed them…🧐
Can’t believe these are one-hit wonders! I remember them being played on the radio stations over and over again. Well, my kids love them today, that’s for sure, so let’s keep their legacies rocking! 😍😍
I was thinking the same thing. These are some of my favourite songs from my teenage years. Many of them are classics despite being one hit wonders.
They may not necessarily be, only in the US. F.ex. Bent Fabric (Fabricius) is Danish, and has composed a very large proportion of Danish film music. So, in his own country, he is a many hits wonder. He got nearly a hundred years old, and made music untill few years before his demise.
Moreover, I recognised more than one hit, that has been covered by other artist later, and so obtained longevity, at least. This goes f.ex. for “Michelle” that has gained second chance by the Beatles.
Yeah I can't believe it! I know every song. They so important at that time on my life.❤️
I can believe it because I know it's true
Having grown up in the 60s I find it hard to believe as well.
Love this stuff, I’m 70, grew up listening to the 60s, still do as I am now (can’t get no satisfaction is playing now). Here’s a few more one hit wonders I remember.
Little Peggy March. I will follow him
Terry Stafford. Suspicion
Sgt. Barry Sadler Ballad of Green Berets
Knickerbockers. Lies
Los Bravos. Black is Black
? and the Mysterians. 96 Tears
American Breed. Bend me Shape me
Mason Williams. Classical Gas
New Vaudeville Band. Winchester Cathedral
And I’m sure there’s many more
Good job the 60s music is the best and will live on forever
MCKenzie had such a beautiful song in “ San Francisco “
Agreed.
@@paulleckner8235 Imagine if he had gone to Cucamonga instead.
@@fefferryerr1818 Wow! Now I can't get that song out of my head!!
@@paulleckner8235 Cucamonga is in california too, he could have gotten off the train there instead of san francisco and written a song about it.
I was born in '61 and yet so many of these songs immediately brought back some memory from childhood.
Yeah my thoughts exactly 👍👌
Oh gosh. Me too. I'm a 61 baby 👍😀
THESE SONGS MAY HAVE ONLY BEEN A HIT ONCE BUT MANY OF THEM STILL LIVE ON!
Absolutely. They’re in the background of my life, softly singing. I was surprised how many memories they brought up. Great music.
I am 66 years old and will turn 67 during the summer. I love these 1 hit wonders and grew up listening to them on the radio. These songs may have been 1 hit wonders, but they are Classics. I loved Sunny, Just One Look, Do You Love Me, Love Is Blue, San Francisc(Flowers In Their Hair), In the Year of 2525, Monster Mash, Boy From New York City, Na Na Na Na, kiss him good bye. All these 1 hit wonders are amazing.
I'm 62 and either remember them from their first airplay or when they were still in rotation not too many years after that.
Me too !
I'm a year younger than you, we were so lucky to grow up in these times!
Same here. 67 in August
Growing up in the Metro Detroit area we had WKNR (Keener 13) and CKLW in Windsor, Ontario pumping out all those one hit wonders on the AM airwaves. Mom bought my first 45, 'Keep on Dancing' by the Gentrys, then 'Oh Pretty Woman' by Roy Orbison and I started filling my little carry case box of 45's which I still have to this day. 😊
Love the 60s..🙂Year 2525...some words ringing true..
Loved listening to 2525 high on LSD and shrooms...
@@mickeymarchwick4752 another phenomenon of the time were the country singers who managed one major pop hit.
Bill Anderson - Still
Skeeter Davis -The End of the World
Statler Brothers -Flowers on the Wall
Jeannie C. Riley -Harper Valley PTA
Tammy Wynette -Stand By Your Man
Henson Cargill -Skip a Rope
Kenny O'Dell -Beautiful People
Tomball and Glaser Brothers -California Girl/Tennessee Square
An impressive list. Sure I must have left out a few. Marty Robbins, Johnny Cash and Glen Campbell had several crossover hits.
I call it the 'time-travelling' song. In each verse, we time travel 1, 010 years ahead!
These one hit wonders are better than a lot of the crap music today.
How many times do we have to teach you this lesson, Jose? It is just your taste, it doesn’t mean later decades are bad. And also, hitting me with homophobic insults and “you’re a beta male” comebacks aren’t gonna get you anywhere, bud. Either accept that it’s your taste or continue being a jerk. That’s all I can tell to your dense mindset for it to grasp. 🙄
@BrendenTheTVShowAndMovieFan Brenden! I thought you never returned!
You got punked again, Josie!
You like cowboys, eh?
I hear the cowboys like you. In the alley. Behind the stables. YeeHAW!
totally agree
@@ChiefsGirlSince1989 Think what you want, but they aren’t crap.
Brooklyn Bridge lead singer Johnny Maestro charted several Top 40 hits as lead singer for The Crests, including 16 Candles which peaked at #2.
1964 I was eleven years old and listening to these songs at night under the covers or on sunny days at the beach. All jump up and dance and sing along songs. I loved and love all these songs.
I’m so lucky my parents loved music. Great list✌️
They might have been once one-hit wonders, but since so many of them were successfully covered / remixed / sampled, I wouldn't mind call them classics...
Last kiss is a great example
A Little Bit of Soap as well. Debut hit for Paul Davis in 1970.
It's crazy how many of these are actually 1hit wonders, and are still playing now. Rather it be in movies set in that era, or in commercials, for the past 40years. Not all 1hw are completely forgotten. I'm shocked at how many I knew, and I didn't exist yet in that decade.😱
And here I am remembering most all this when it was new.
Thank you for this presentation. I would have loved to have heard the songs in full.
That´s why they are wonders :) Iconic tunes - if they had more hits, maybe they would have drowned among them - now they stand out. yay!
a really fantastic trip down memory lane.
Incredible! I was born 1958, but I know every single song!
Thank you so much for the overview and for the Spotify Playlist!
Born in '58 myself. Know them all.
I know every song on this video! When I was anywhere from 7 to 13 years old, I had my ear practically glued to my transistor radio. Kids like me would buy 45s of music like this at the local Woolworth's. How I miss those times!
Same here. My Mom would get so mad at me going through so many 9 volt batteries lol
Oh those 7" 45rpm records. Scratch them up on that old tube phonograph.
The great thing about these one-hit wonders is that they all have their own distinctive sound, different from the main stream songs of the same period.
Merrilee Rush- Angel of the Morning is nothing short of brilliant in my opinion.
Love the slide guitar.
If anyone were to ask about a song that WAS 1968, that one would be it!
I'm not a fan of country at all, but I loved that song then, and I still love it now.
@@ferociousgumby I never considered that country but, maybe so
@@anderander5662 the 1981 remake by Juice Newton was both a country and pop hit.
So many great songs here that I readily recognize by their tunes and arrangements but not by their artists' names. Too bad they never charted again. Perhaps their success was hard to repeat. Thanks for bringing these back!
Always impressed with these "one hit wonders" -- to have one massive hit is an amazing achievement! That said, I'll never understand why Spiral Staircase didn't have more chart toppers. "More Today than Yesterday" is such an incredible song and performance.
Damn. This brings back memories. And I had forgotten how HIDEOUS some of the clothes we wore, especially the white shirts and skinny ties. Great music. Thanks for the recap.
The best right at the end :) Song about a dystopian future, which somewhat dangerously reminds us today's world. Zager & Evans created a shocking masterpiece that resonates for eternity.
Picked up where George Orwell left off.
I was born in 1970, but there is something about music from the 60’s that speaks to my soul. I always said my favorite music decades were the 60’s and 80’s.
I had so many of these gems on 45 and I played the hell out of them growing up. Oldies radio was always my go to along with newer music. Love this stuff.
This was a great list and I enjoyed it. Thank you!
one of my favorite one hit wonder from the 60's is Black Is Black by Los Bravos.
That was a cool tune!
This list brings back so many memories. Since I was a kid I’d listen to music to help me fall asleep. I was OBSESSED with “Oldies” (now the oldies station plays music from when I was born and it freaks me out, but that’s another story). I used to hear all of these songs and I loved them so much. Thank you for tickling my nostalgia bone. 💜💜💜
It's amazing the number of these songs that were hits in my country, but by different singers or bands.
These are Icon one hit wonders that will live on 4ever--was 12 years old when I heard these songs and still remember them and sing to them at 76...keep on rockin and rollin!!
Barry McGuire became a born again Christian and is still popular in Christian circles. He continued to write beautiful, amazing music. His communion song is the best communion song ever, in my opinion. He's a great comedian too. I wrote an email to him some years back and he took the time to reply. He's a real gem. Oh yes, his album, Bull frogs and butterflies is still a favourite children's collection of songs in Sunday schools and parochial schools throughout the anglophone world.
Sure did
McGuire was also lead singer of The New Christie Minstrels.
The same group that had
Kenny Rogers and Kim Carnes .
David McWilliams had at least 2 other big hits with " the Stranger" and " Can I get there by Candle Light"
Part of the Lemon Pipers had a world wide smash hit as Ram Jam with " Black Betty:
In the year 2525 is still so good!
And looking like it’s going to be true lol🤔
@Mango T Yeah, sadly, I keep thinking like that as well.
I found a consistent problem with all of your videos. They end.
My thoughts exactly 🤔🤔
/end suddenly so if someone is writing a comment, it goes directly to the next video without time to pause or anything, and the comment being typed is just gone as is the video..,
I remember these songs when I was a kid back in the 60s. Oh I missed those days.
Thanks for sharing.
Monster Mash was No 1 on the US Billboard Hot 100 in 1962. In the UK the BBC banned it as "too morbid". But it was re-released in the UK in 1973 and reached No 3 on the charts (this time not banned). So it was a one hit wonder in the 60s - and the 70s!
Due to the growing popularity of streaming "Halloween-related" songs around October 31, "Monster Mash" hit the Billboard Hot 100 again in October 2021 @ #37 and also made the Canadian and UK charts. Looking forward to it coming back in October 2022! 🎃
Boris Karloff was reportedly flattered by Pickett's vocal; needless to say, Pickett was floored.
Always gets revisited near Halloween.
I have that on vinyl lol. The whole album. That;s how old I am🙈
What a great selection. I remember all but a few. A few I'd forgotten about that I can revisit now thanks to your listing of the artist and titles. Thanks and rock on
Fun Facts:
Bobby Hebb toured with the Beatles in 1966 and at that time "Sunny" was ranked higher than any Beetles' song at the time.
The Gentry's had a vocalist by the name Jimmy Hart who later made had some fame in the WWF (WWE now) wrestling as a manager for the likes of Hulk Hogan among others.
"Stay" by Maurice Williams and the Zodiacs is the shortest length song to reach #1 on Billboard.
Jimmy Hart - the Mouth of the South ! Larry Raspberry and Jimmy formed the Gentrys in Memphis, Tennessee 👍🏻
Thanks so much for sharing this artists, shame that they never managed to get another hit song, but we'll still love them for their sole number one track! 🎶💯
What about 96 Tears by ? & the Mysterians 1966?
I can't say they are all 1 hit wonders. Johnny Maestro and the Brooklyn Bridge had quite a few great hits.
Shocked the heck out of me too - but only Worst Thing made the top 40. A few between 40 and 50. Maybe they were stronger regionally?
@@fionam3554 Blessed is the Rain was a top 10 hit in Boston.
So many great songs still playing today.
May have been one hit wonders, but many were great songs that never become outdated
Yes and have been covered many times.
Some fine tracks here!
I love the 60's. Such beautiful music was made then. Can listen to it everyday no problem
Beautiful music is everywhere in any decade! The 60s had a cool selection of hits :)
I grew up with these songs, can’t believe they are one hit wonders, many of these songs are fantastic.
Great memories! I'd never get tired of these.
One hit wonders are definitely on my ipod - some of the best music ever!!!
Love it ! These songs take me back to my childhood and my youth. I still listen to them . Great songs don't get old they just get better.🤗
Born in the mid-50s, I grew up with these (& a *lot* more like them) in the 60s & 70s. What a wonderful time to be young! I'm in my mid/late 60s now but still listen to this era's music- it'll never grow old.
'Keep On Dancing' by The Gentrys was my first 45. 😊
This music list just played my preteen and early teen years.
Oh my. That was quite a trip down memory lane - listening to these on AM radio.
Wonderful memories. Some of these songs were covered by others, many by British sixties beat bands and others by seventies and eighties British acts, and others too. A good song is forever. 🎶😄
Including Little Eva, whose "Locomotion" became a hit all over again a decade later for Grand Funk Railroad. Also a decade later the woman she babysat for, Carole King, would become a superstar in her own right, thus joining the likes if Bob Dylan, Kris Kristofferson and John Denver among those who stepped out into the spotlight after major success as songwriters for other acts.
The Brooklyn Bridge’s lead singer, Johnny Maestro, had lots of hits with the Crests. Barry McGuire went on to be quite successful in contemporary Christian music.
Eric Cartman had a career in Christian music too. Very hilarious.
And didn't he spend time with the New Christy Minstrels, along with future hit maker Kenny Rogers.
@@beechnut79 Green Green it's green they say........
I know a lot of 60s songs for a youngster thanks to this amazing person
I remember almost all of them, and am pleased that some are still on air. In fact, I've played many of them and in at least one case played several times at gigs in the band of one of them.
Some fantastic songs 60s was a great decade
4:25 the first Jamaican ska record to make the Billboard Hot 100
Ernie K Doe had another big hit called "Here Come The Girls" in 1971 that was covered by the Sugababes in the 2000s and is used on many TV adverts.
Oh my goodness. I do remember some of these one hit wonders growing up during the 1960s!! Other hits I've completely forgotten about. I love your channel!! It brings back so many memories!! I myself have a huge collection of music I've purchased over the years and in the process of digitalizing it.
I still cannot the believe Scott McKenzie and the Cascades are a one hit wonder after looking at their discography
Scott McKenzie actually had another hit song in the late 60s- "Like an Old Time Movie".
Remember Ketty Lester was in the 70s "Blaxploitation" movie "Blacula" where the late actor William Marshall played the screen's first "Black" vampire and he bit her, I was about 13 when it came out..
Spirit in the Sky, one of the biggest isn't there....🤫
That's a song from the 1970s and not from the 1960s
@@somerandomguy_music Spirit in the Sky was released in 1969. I was there....
@@BIZKITJODE But it was released in December of 1969 in the UK. It didn’t gain that much traction until the song was released in the USA in January 1970, thus is why he included it in the 1970s list.
@@arturoromero951 Since I first heard it in 69, I'll stick with that. But thanks for the info. 👍
@Sunrays2020 In Yankland.....🤫
Le titre " the days of Pearly Spencer " de David Mc Williams était trés original et incroyablement en avance musicalement pour cette époque, un vrai " masterpiece "
The good thing about this video,I remember most of them. Plus you had shows, like Hullabaloo, Shingdig,American Bandstand, Midnight Special, Ed Sullivan and AM radio. I am glad my parents like music, sometimes we would watch those shows together. Anybody remember Ted Mack Amateur Hour? I listen to music from AtoZ period.,no matter what genre. I love gifted singers, musicians, song writers and the people who knew talent. This was a good one.
Along with Arthur Godfrey Talent Scouts whose major alumnus had to be Patsy Cline, who in her brief life enjoyed major success in both country and pop.
Boy, did these bring back memories.
Thanks For Sharing!
The disc jockeys used to love playing Richard Harris' " McArthur Park"...meant a long " bathroom break" for them...
Wonderful Music And Memories
With So Many Songs I Remember And Forget
It's Funny How Time Flies Really Fast
excellent music and great artists.....
I’m so lucky my parents loved music. Great list️
What a fantastic 'nostalgia' trip..what a decade of music 🎶 & these were 1 hit wonders...the cascades..John Fred &;the playboys..the honeycombes..Millie...etc.. etc..Still being played now on Gold radio 60's Saturday & Sunday..check it out...thanks for posting & long live the 60's my sorted music 🎶 🙏
Millie's My Boy Lollipop was my former girlfriend's favourite song, which she liked to sing.
An excellent 60's song 🎵
@@rjjcms1 and another Brit, Helen Shapiro, was a big act in her country but only managed one moderate hit in the states, "Walking Back to Happiness".
This takes me way back in time and it's amazing how I remember the lyrics of these songs. They take me back to a simpler time in life, singing these with my sister.
Thinking, jeez, I remember all these songs from when I was kid and then thinking, holy shit, I'm not a kid any more, then thinking, jeez, I'm a one hit wonder too.
So, Ben Cartwright (Lorne Greene) and the first Prof. Dumbledore (Richard Harris) each had a one-hit wonder!
I didn't even know they sang!
I had heared the original version of McArthur park (which i was surprised to discover aswell, not knowing initially that Donna Summer covered it) so I was shocked to discovered he had a singing career
Great performance by Richard Harris and favoured by DJs needing a break :
czcams.com/video/tRwYQgk05DY/video.html
Much prefer this to the later hyped up cover losing the essence of the song.
If you can call that singing. "MacArthur Park" was one of my all-time favorite songs, but for the orchestra, certainly not Harris' singing.
Technically Lorne Greene didn't sing.. (-8 He was a rapper.
Lorne Greene's hit was in late 1964 and likely wouldn't have been a hit if the gunslinger hadn't been named Ringo.
*Kyu Sakamoto* - _Sukiyaki_ -On August 12, 1985, Sakamoto was aboard Japan Airlines Flight 123 (departing from Tokyo), heading to Osaka for an event. The plane crashed into two ridges of Mount Takamagahara in Ueno, Gunma, a disaster that remains the deadliest single-aircraft accident in history with 520 people killed, including Sakamoto. He was interred at Chōkoku-ji Temple in the central Minato-ku area in Tokyo
Monster Mash has to be the greatest of the one hit wonders!!Still played today!
Michael Coppola. Gonna vote for Sugar Sugar.
Every October 31st.
Can't believe Scott McKenzie was a one hit wonder. He should have had way more hits with that voice. I love 60's songs, even though I wasn't born till the end of the 60's. It was by far the best decade for pop music. In fact, I have way more 60's songs in my collection then any other decade since. Quite a few there I've not heard before. A few I liked and never knew who the artist was. Then there's ones I've loved all my life, like San Francisco, in the year 2525, monster mash, grocer Jack, and fire. Grocer Jack always makes me emotional. It always reminds me of my lovely childhood in the 70's, when everything was nice and the world was a lovely place to be in, unlike today's world when everyone is bitching on what others are doing, often for no reason and too many brain dead politicians want to change things for the worst and the world is in a mess financially and morally.
John Phillips wrote San Francisco. He was going to give it to Denny Doherty, Denny was sleeping with Johns wife. Michele. So, welcome to one hit wonderland, Scott McKinzie.
It will, I submit, only get worse. Maybe unbelievably worse.
Oh man. In the first of the 60's lived with restricted radio in the PI. Moved to northern va in 66 and found WMOD 98.7. They played all these.
There is a one hit wonder in "I Fought The Law" by Bobby Fuller Four in 1966. Bobby Fuller died several months after his hit single was in top ten.
What is sad, is I remember all of them. I can sing all of them...The Safaris played at my high school. God I'm old.
banger after banger!! good times, good music! I miss it
Algunas de estas canciones se han vuelto clásicos en las versiones de otros grupos/ cantantes. Hermoso video. Thks SRG
My Spanish is rusty. But roughly translated I think this says that some of these songs have become (han vuelto = have turned 🤔) classics as cover versions performed by other groups/singers. Beautiful (literally, hermoso = handsome) video.
Edit: looked it up and "han vuelto" = they have returned. So essentially the sentiment is that the songs have been rejuvenated and kept alive through the efforts of artists other than the original performers. There's nothing wrong with a good cover version, imho.
@@didyasaysomethin2me of cours there is nothing wrong with a good cover, nor with the song itself. It is just that, unfortunately, the original performers have been forgotten in most cases
@@Chechula1000 Unfortunately true. And it's due largely to indifference in my experience. Back in the late 90s I tried telling a coworker that the version of I Think We're Alone Now that was playing on the radio was a cover. And when I tried telling her that it was originally Tommy James & the Shondells she couldn't wait to cut me off and rudely, almost angrily stated "I don't care!" It's disgusting.
Throughout all my kids' lives whenever there was an opportunity to introduce a particular song to my kids in a way that I could relate to something they were already interested in I didn't let those teachable moments go to waste. There have been a number of times when they recognized the song or the artist but didn't realize what was significant about it. For example, my oldest daughter couldn't pin any memories of anything to Captain and Tenille until I played the song Do That To Me One More Time, or when my oldest son didn't care about the Bee Gees until I told him that they were responsible for the song More Than A Woman in the movie Short Circuit. Or the time I played For The Longest Time and he, already being a Billy Joel fan, realized that he didn't hate doo wop as much as he thought he did. And just within the last year he took the initiative to send me a link to a recording of Strange Fruit. If it doesn't melt your heart to know that a 20 something in this day and age would give two shits about Billie Holiday you might want to check to make sure that you're even human. It's the greatest feeling in the world when you can actually get them to take a minute to care. It's the best, and maybe the only, way to keep the music alive.
Edit: Sorry for the long rant.
Edit 2: Accidentally wrote Crimson and Clover instead of I Think We're Alone Now. Please don't hate me too much. 😳😉
Dang, I remember hearing most all of these over the years. I was a kid in the 60's and a teenager in the 70's. I didnt know they were one hit wonders tho? Many of them were good songs.
I cant believe The Cascades only had 1 hit. They have so many beautiful songs
I was listening and remember most of these until "Ringo". And that sparked a memory of me with a transistor radio under a blanket in the middle of the night listening to the radio when this song came on and I was mesmerized. I had to look up the song. 1964. I was 9. Thanks for the memory.
So many of these helped define my youth.
Same here!
They may have been one-hit wonders but many of these songs have had a lasting cultural impact. I'm familiar with several of these from later covers (Sunny, Cool Jerk, etc.).
I was born in 1979 and was raised on this music and much of this music played on the radio back in the 1980's and early 90's
Consider the words In The Year 2525. A lot of things hang come to pass yet, but they were right about so many things in the song.
Could probably sing along word for word, yea I'm old as the earth but still young at heart
Many of these were really big hits in their day. Please do a part two some day, there are still plenty more. Two of them I never heard, but that was probably a regional thing.
Great compilation!
They're not just one hit wonders but instead are all now anthems and the soundtrack of our once young selves.
A few of these are amongst my favorite songs of all time.
Ammmmaging! Thank you for show us to beautiful moment!🙏🤗
To be fair some of these artists, even though they may have had only one major national hit, charted several times with other minor hits. For example, the Exciters charted several times after "Tell Him." The Exciters released the follow up single "He's Got the Power ( of which I bought the single) and "Do Wah Diddy" before Manfred Mann released his version. The Exciters also had another minor hit called "A Little Bit of Soap" six years after "Tell Him." Merrilee Rush also had other songs in release after "Angel in the Morning." Ten years after "Angel in the Morning" Merrilee had another minor hit called "Save Me" which I bought as a single upon its release. Also the Reflections had another big hit in Los Angeles after "Romeo and Juliet" called "Poor Man's Son." It got lots of air play in LA and it seemed to be a hit judging from the amount of airplay it got in LA.
I still sing some of these songs in the shower. I was surprised to see a version of "Michelle." on this list. "Michelle" has been covered more than 300 times since 1966. The world's record for most recorded song in history is "Yesterday." By The Beatles. By 2017, there were 2,216 recorded versions of" Yesterday."
I love more today than yesterday 🎶was one of my mom and Dad's songs 💫 spectacular video ✌️💟🤗
I thought that was part of the classic IV. It sounds just like stormy and spooky
The Gentry's biggest member turned out to be wrestling manager Jimmy"Mouth of the South" Hart 😃
