  • I'll be the first to admit, I'm guilty of presenting solely the highs of finding cool items in the charity shops, but not of the other side of the coin. Well, here it is, in all its glory. Whilst it wasn't a completely wasted trip, it does show the difficulties resellers (and indeed general shoppers) are facing with inflated prices and poor quality stock.
    My name is Chris and I am a part-time eBay reseller, automotive enthusiast, fitness fan and general eclectic. This is my channel, dedicated to showcasing my reselling journey, including tips and tricks about what to look out for and honest mistakes along the way!

    Sorry to hear this , Chris. We have recently found you on CZcams and really enjoy your content. We have watched the likes of Chaddypete, Hairy Tornado, Retro reseller and always said "see how you get on in Newton Abbot" where we live. We were delighted to discover you were local to Newton Abbot and couldn't believe there was someone going to the same charity shops as us and finding "bangers".
    Quite understand your dilemma - we agree, if you pay the price the shop is asking -what is the problem?

    It’s ridiculous now, very rarely I find decent stuff, I even found something in my local shop that was just shoved in a box on the floor in the back of the store, asked a price and the woman genuinely said “can’t sell that until I’ve eBayed the price” and other times I’ve found things that are actually marked up by about 10% of the EBay prices, they get all they’re stuff for free and are bleeding people dry but they don’t realise that they’re actually missing out on sales because of this!

      Yes. So true if I have to buy ebay prices I will buy ebay with all the description rules and the buyer fearing a bad review. I am not buying from Susan from the charity shop who will look at me like I'm a weirdo if I say a piece is missing. Charity shops are excused of stringent quality control because you get it cheap. Why would I take a risk if I was paying full ebay price?

    It is getting ridiculous. Coupled with how many people are doing it now, you not only have to catch them sleeping, you have to be in the right place at the right time, anything good goes as soon as it hits the rails. I hear, 'thats only just been put out' quite a lot when i do buy. Stay positive. Persistence and repetition of your closest good one is my formula and it does pay off.

      Very true. There’s definitely a lot more competition now, from legitimate resellers or “Vinted resellers” as I like to term some people (aka not declaring their income). Persistence is definitely they key to eventual success.

    This is one of the reasons I gave up on being a reseller - prices quite high. It probably works well for many of us out there but not for me. Keep up the good work.

      I certainly could never do it full time, it’s far too unpredictable for my liking. As a side gig it’s fine as there’s no dependency, but I was full time, I certainly wouldn’t be relying on them for my stock!

  • @jennyd9691

    The charity shops are onto it all now, they want the money for themselves. Whats frustrating is thay they pay zero for their stock , reduced rent, low (if any) staff wages....and try to get top dollar for each item rather than selling as much as possible. Plus, as you say, even nonsellers cant afford the charity shop prices.

    • @Planet_Passey
      @Planet_Passey  Před 8 měsíci

      So very true. I really want to sit down with people who price stuff up in the more corporate-focussed chains and ask them why they think Joe Public will waltz in and pay above the asking price online for things. It’s certainly not a sustainable business model!

  • @YoSuzz

    I’ve defo had more than a few times like this, it’s really depressing. The worst is when you’ve travelled further afield and come back with nothing. I think with Xmas coming up it might be a hard slog for the next couple of months. I’ve just come up to a year doing this as a hobby. Trying to be disciplined as well to not buy something just for the sake of buying if it’s a slow day. Good to see you got one decent find at the end!

    • @Planet_Passey
      @Planet_Passey  Před 8 měsíci

      Travelling further afield really doesn’t help as I feel I need to buy something just to try and offset the fuel costs at least! It really is tricky though but I’m hoping post-Christmas will see things settle down. Prices can’t keep rising that’s for sure!

    Nothing more soul destroying than heading out for a day's sourcing with a spring in your step and a glint in your eye, only to return four hours later with nowt but a face like a smacked bum. It's not just that the prices are sky high, the goods themselves aren't all that (Blue bloody Harbour, Atlas for Men etc). On a brighter note that Finistierre coat is a beaut.

    • @Planet_Passey

      It’s sure becoming more of a toil and those days really do leave you feeling so deflated. Good days do occur and they’re great but the bad days do make you wonder why we bother sometimes!

    "Oh I'd really like one of those Little People sets I had when I was a kid for my kids! I know! I'll trek round some charity shops all day! Bound to find one!!" - says... nobody...

      That’s the thing that boggles the mind. If it was a tenner you’d perhaps purchase it on a whim (I know I would) for a gift/to sell on. But pricing it so high really limits the potential punters to the absolutely clueless individuals. If you want something like this 999/1000 you’re going to it to buy it online!

  • @waynebutcher9589

    Competition and knowledge shared on the internet. Charity shops hire staff who use eBay and you tube.
    Reselling probably the only business where you help the competitors in the hope of subs and views.

    • @Planet_Passey
      @Planet_Passey  Před 8 měsíci

      It’s swings and roundabouts I guess. I’ve learnt much of what I know by watching others on here and feel sharing my own experiences may help others out. There’s enough stuff out there for everyone to benefit from and there are always new things to learn.

    • @waynebutcher1580

      I do understand as I would add my bolos etc to my reselling Instagram account but I realised all I was doing is helping the competition and upping the price while helping the staff at the charity shops. (trust me the watch CZcams as I know a lad who work at havens).
      But like most I used CZcams as a tool but it has become a curse.
      CZcamsrs will say there videos have no affect but trust me if you have 60k subs they are all your competitors.
      People will say stop moaning and the stuffs out there if your good at it but trust me I'm great at it but I can see a big change in the last 3 years.

    • @Planet_Passey
      @Planet_Passey  Před 8 měsíci

      @@cooltv9350 it’s a tricky one, it really is. It’s almost like certain staff become competition too! But I’d like to think those of us who research the niche brands, the stuff that sell for good money that’s well below the radar, will be fine. Most of the known brands that are often priced up (Ralph Lauren, Tommy Hilfiger etc, stuff that is likely to make these lists) aren’t all that for the most part. Believe me, there’s lots of stuff I find that doesn’t make it to videos and someone like me with such a small subscriber and view count, I’d like to think I’m not having a detrimental impact on pricing!

    • @waynebutcher1580

      @@Planet_PasseyI don't think there is enough for all, facebook market place you need to catch it immediately, boot sales are full of resellers and charity shops are clued up on prices.
      People may argue that maybe knowledge is an issue but with all the CZcamsrs currently how can it be?
      I'm always picking up gems but it's not a living.

    Charity shop workers must price ridiculously so at the end of the week they can gather up all these no sales and make a small donation for the lot. Its all priced by them so it's easy to work out they're up to shenanigans.

    • @Planet_Passey
      @Planet_Passey  Před 8 měsíci +1

      I’ve often heard workers say “ooh, I was going to have that but it’s the wrong size/etc” when I’ve been at the till. Doesn’t surprise me if they pluck certain items at a discount! 😂

  • @Claudia-vn3fb
    @Claudia-vn3fb Před 7 měsíci

    I don't even mind that much if they price up a popular reseller brand. At the end of the day it's business, and I don't take it personally if they're trying to make money off me, who is trying to make money off them. Fair enough.
    BUT: asking £40 for a winter jacket from a no-name brand that has a stain on (!!), from an ordinary shopper who is looking for something to keep them warm in Winter? That's atrocious. Shame on you for calling yourself a charity shop, really. I wonder what the person who donated it would say to that. I'd go so far as to say, everyone would be better off if the donor would sell the jacket on vinted and donate the money to a person who needs it.
    On another note, if a charity shop is having ridiculous pricing, I'll call them out on Google reviews. Especially the ones that have signs in the shop saying "we don't take donations, we're full".

    • @Planet_Passey
      @Planet_Passey  Před 7 měsíci +1

      I completely agree; Ralph Lauren, Tommy H, etc. By all means ask a bit more for them as people will probably pay it. But marking things up so high it doesn’t make any sense is just ridiculous. I hope they don’t sell it as a lesson learnt, but then I would want it to go to someone who is in need of one.

      Overpricing in all industries needs calling out. Charity shops are no different. Would be interesting if a Charity Shop worker could tell us how much employees/volunteers are skimming off all the best stuff for themselves and what prices they are paying.
