    I've used Sennheiser microphones for several years, and have learned to trust their equipment when I needed the best sounding audio. The MKE-400 adds another tool to my kit that I can trust to capture high quality audio.
    This is the adobe audition preset I developed and used to edit my vocals when it showed "processed" on the screen: bit.ly/2ZRE4wU

    As a 15 year location sound veteran, I love these videos where my camera friends discover the value of a professional name brand. Imagine listening to two sound geeks figuring out the value of a Sony over a Go-Pro.

    great review, that 416 still sounds about $800.00 better (no surprise) but the MKE-400 looks like a super compact on camera solution. good to see you back

    Glad to see you are well! Their new MKE series looks nice for the smaller than normal size and placement of the output port that makes it easier to still use the camera for photos with it attached. Though I think I'd go with the MKE 200 for this type of use case.

    This is interesting- I think the Sennheiser sounds better in this case compared to the Rode. I also have these two mics and have had better luck with the NTG in my studio. But hot dang, your 416 sounds delicious.

    • @TommyCallaway
      @TommyCallaway  Před 3 lety +7

      I agree. I always liked Rode but when compared in the exact same environment, Sennheiser has the edge. I also used to like charging but replacing a battery has much more utility for long term use. My A7S3 settings were: (Audio recording level: 10) Rode mic was at +7, Senn mic was at +20.

    As far as I can explain the Rode is not adding any noise, its just that the circuits in that mic are different from the one in the Senheisser. Obv, you can have your preferences, me too, I prefer the noise profile of the Senheisser

    I know you have your post-processing audio workflow, but if you made use of the FX in your ATEM Mini, you probably wouldn’t need to do any post-processing at all. ;>
    You should get Sennheiser to send you an MKH50 and/or MKH8050 for comparison with your MKH416.
    Glad you’re back!

    Could you recommend a decent Cam Mic for recording music live ?it’s for live street gigs (I think a shotgun would be fine as it would be directed at an AER Domino 2A Amp.. We tried using an Apogee MiC (just perfect for live ‘indoor’ venues but too clean for outdoor gigs)
    I came across a few cam mics on eBay that I thought may suit & well priced , sE Electronics ProMic Laser, Deity D3, Rode video mic pro & Sennheisers.. I’m guessing the Sennheisers & Deity maybe a little bright? Does a deadcat soften the high end detail more or maybe too much compared to a foam windshield ? I would still like to have a little street ambience. Thanks 🙏🏻

    How the batter is not relevant? Lithium batteries lies 2-3 years or 300-500 charges(whichever comes first). But with MKE you can change batteries easily.

    The MKE400 sounds great, really great, until you connect your camera or recorder to the mains. Awful ground problem with any recorder, camera, smartphone I have tried. I had two of these mics, both did same, I could fortunately return one. No similar issue with any other microphone I have, including the VM NTG. Just a heads up.

    • @TommyCallaway
      @TommyCallaway  Před 2 lety +1

      Grab a ground noise isolator. It's like $10 to $20 on amazon and fixes this issue in many electronics that have that issue. I use one for live streaming with my mixpre3.

      Done. I can only rely on what you say; while there were some differences in how they sound, I'm not the one to judge quality or "special traits" like white noise, but the results were noted. Why did you choose Rode for the comparison, as I seem to have missed the reason? That was the only other on-camera microphone you had?

    • @TommyCallaway
      @TommyCallaway  Před 3 lety

      @@marcinmrzyglocki I have had several on camera mics. I got rid of the rest when I got the rode NTG originally last year. I was comparing the Senn MKE-400 to Rode, because the Rode originally got the pick based on how closely it sounded like the MKH-416 compared to the rest of my on-camera mics. The MKE-400 is simply closer to how I want my mic to sound, so it wins. If you're in a pinch, you can boom the MKE-400 and it will sound very very very close to the MKH-416 as shown in my little demo. You can barely tell when the mic switches back to the MKH-416. Listen at 1:50 with your eyes closed and then re-listen at 1:50 watching the labels.
