This is freaking awesome. The sound may have been a combination of actual with some effects, but regardless it was done very well. The car that spins and saves was Malcomb Fox in a Studebaker with Riding mechanic Bob Hurst who appears to be either signaling to the other drivers or pumping his fist with joy. The car that spun in front of Billy Arnold who along with riding mechanic Spider Matlock flipped over the wall, was Peter Kreis who also hit the wall later on lap 178. He was more famous for being the owner/driver in 1926 who was injured and allowed a rookie named Frank Lockhart to drive it. Lockhart won the race and would have won the following year when the connecting rod broke after leading 110 of the 119 laps he ran. GREAT STUFF HERE!!!
Most likely the sound effect on this newsreel aren't fake. It was a sound newsreel, which would have been emphasized at the time (1932) and they sound genuine. Fake sound is usually pretty easy to detect, and they would add a lot of crashing and banging sounds when a car went over the wall, and screeching tires when a car spun, which you don't hear here. I'm pretty sure this is the real sound of the race. I like how in these old races, the driver pulls in wearing a shirt & tie.
After winning the race (leading 198 of 200 laps in the process) in 1930, Billy & Spider crashed badly while leading in 1931. Both were laid up for some time. In '32, they crashed again as seen here, and arguably the best "big car" driver of the era hung up his helmet and goggles for good.
