Remembering John Lennon with a Paul McCartney song?
So what? It’s a Beatles song.
@@dabelgrave yeah it is a Beatles song and it’s a very good Beatles song but John’s presence in New York was very much a solo career presence. Got so many great solo songs why would you play a Paul McCartney song?
@@jwt208 Do you really expect people to drag their instruments to the park from near and far, people who bring full-on keyboards from Maryland, that these people will come to the park just twice a year to play music, and play for hours and work themselves into a full Beatles buzz and NOT play “You Won’t See Me” or “Lady Madonna” or whatever because it’s a ‘Paul song’? That they are all assembled there in the park and they’re not going to want to play “Here Comes The Sun” because it’s a ‘George song’? What sense does that make? They’re all Beatles songs, John most likely sang and/or performed on the Paul record or the George record. John founded the band, do you ever think of the Beatles or hear the Beatles and not have John come to mind? If this was a sing-along tribute for Freddie Mercury, would you question why they sang “We Will Rock You” because Brian May wrote that song?? I seriously doubt you would.
Sometimes, the band decides to replay a whole Beatles album straight through like they often do with Abbey Road. Are they supposed to pick out the Paul songs and not perform them because John wasn’t the primary writer on them? What sense does that make?
There are people in the park playing for 12 hours or so on these sing along days. Many Beatles songs are like two and a half minutes long. They’re going to go through the whole catalog. On these days they will play Beatles songs and John’s post Beatles material. I will grant you that on the rare occasions they have played “Band On The Run”, and McCartney solo or Wings material did feel out of place.
But if it’s any Beatles song, I don’t see the problem or that it’s not appropriate to the spirit of the occasion. A celebration of any Beatles song is a celebration of John.
I’m baffled that like clockwork, somebody will make this same comment every year. I’m baffled that the thought even occurs to people. That they will take the time to actually type out the thought as a comment on one of the videos. I’m like… they must be trolling. Maybe you are. In any case, just enjoy the music. Jeez…
