Hey! Thanks for watching. Loved how this episode turned out. You can find all of the resources I used in the show notes. I see a lot of angry comments, but remember, the question was should YOU wear weighted clothing. Goku is a super buff alien and he can obviously pull it off, but would using our Earth-version of weighted clothing give you similar benefits? Keeping that in mind, I stand by my conclusion. -- KH

The DBZ characters also had several several YEARS of training with them, from young ages. The time span alone could compensate their bodies into recognition of the weight. All of what you said is true, if you're sloppy while wearing them you'll get hurt. But flexibility training, and constant focus put on those exposed joints would be a lot like doing a workout till absolute failure. So long as you dont let your weights to get too heavy too soon you should be fine. Remember Goku was stronger than a grown man before he could walk. So the point of this practice is to have constant tension put on his body to make him have to constantly watch what hes doing. It helps his focus and control over his body. So that even if he took them off, or was fighting he WASNT just swinging around radically and losing control over his joints, tendons, etc. If you dont train or wear them the RIGHT way with your focus and alert on high at all times like every second you're wearing them you'll get hurt. You have to focus on not hyper extending at any time. Constant working out, hes not just wearing them like clothes, every move he makes is planned out. So that when he does lift his arm for something small like scratching his head or holding a cup hes making sure his whole body is in on it and making the conscious effort to move around without putting too much strain on his shoulder, rotator cuff, and elbows. His whole body is moving around with insane amounts of control. The more your body acclimates to that level of focus, the better off you'll be doing this training. Side note, goku is an alien who's body literally doubles its ability with every last rep and battle. So this training is literally perfect for his race. Humans would not be able to advance that fast without doing the training at a very young age. And of course with much lighter weights. If the body is used to being that heavy it'll compensate, if you focus on all of your movements and dont fling around willy nilly you should be fine. But again that's a "every second of every day" kind of thing. 24/7 focus, no matter what.

thats why 10+ years ago when I was practicing martial arts almost fulltime, i only bothered with ankle and wrist weights. I only wore them outside of the actual training times. the point was to make every little action: walking, cooking, working, etc an extra effort by itself, to not let my arms and legs just drop, to make every movement consciously and purposefully. The end result wasnt to make my muscles grow or anything like that, but make some muscles around my joints more durable. I found that my joints were able to withstand higher impacts/recoils from my own punches and kicks.
But that was then, and here i am now. more than 10 years later. Suffered an injury that theres no way to 100% recover from. Spinal nerve damage. I had to give up martial arts. I can do most activities but with some limitations and every once in awhile my legs or parts of my legs would go numb and then Id have to use a cane to keep my self from dropping to the ground all of the sudden in front of people.

I was 440lbs, and when I got to 340lbs I felt skinny and as light as a feather walking around, even though I was 340lbs lol... Having that extra weight definitely helps for training.

I actually tried this for three weeks. If you're interested, here's how it went down...
I've been training for years, Boxing, Muay Thai and MMA. A couple years back, just before COVID, I got invited to fight in Strelka. I hadn't had a fight since my late twenties and I was one of the oldest fighters on the roster, so to get the edge over the younger competition, I thought I'd give it a try. I lived in (at home only) and trained with 2-2kg wrist weights on each forearm, the same on each leg and a 30kg vest strapped to my upper body.
    At home:
Doing regular shit, like frying an egg was beyond frustrating, because all the gear would just get in the way. Eventually, I started walking around the house like a crab, so I didn't knock shit over and that included my kids! After a couple days, I started keeping my forearms bent in a semi-curl position without realizing, because I wasn't feeling any beneficial resistance on the muscle groups I was trying to target. After about a week, I had to keep them like that to relieve the strain off my rotator cuffs. I could feel some minor benefit in my core, because I had to WORK to keep a solid posture at all times, but in general, I could feel the unnatural position actually changing my posture for the worse.
In terms of legs, I didn't really notice a difference. MMA and crossfit are pretty leg intensive, so maybe I didn't use enough weight or walk around enough, but I definitely felt it in the ligaments in my feet (and not in a good way), because I constantly had to correct my center of balance. I didn't try weighted sleeping, but I'm pretty sure it's a bitch!
    During training:
Training was more frustrating than day to day life. Weighted training gear has it's benefits, but when you strap weights onto places that don't need them, they seriously get in the way! For example, pushups are nearly impossible with wrist weights, because your wrists can't bend. Sit-ups are awesome with wrist weight's but the vest restricts you from fully sitting up.
Funny enough, I found bag and pad work to be the most counter-productive of the lot! I actually thought I'd gain in this department. The weights kept flying back and forth when I punched, especially with jabs and crosses. I had to keep resetting them, which took more time then the actual training itself! With kicking, I could feel some benefit with teeps, but with roundhouse kicks, the weights flung me off balance and stopped me from following through into my target and once again, just like with my wrists, it restricted joint movement in my ankles. The vest just got in the way of everything.
There's my personal account. I hope that gives some insight to all the potential SSJ's out there... Weighted training gear isn't gonna miraculously help you achieve the transformation! They don't simulate extra gravity (like you think), because the extra weight isn't evenly distributed throughout your body. Give it a bash, maybe you'll get so angry from trying to live and train in them, that you'll explode and your hair will turn yellow 😀 Personally, all I gained was wasting three weeks of crucial training time. To be honest, you'll probably gain more by jogging with a barbell...
Brilliantly done vid, I laughed my ass off 🤣🤣🤣

I want to say, I love these videos and this channel in general. Love it. I've thought about this video specifically, and while I surely agree with everything said as it's pretty plain and simple, it occurs to me, even though this may or may not be specifically mentioned in the Dragon Ball series, that the weights worn, specifically the ankle and wrist weights, could be a matter of forced control in movement. Considering the strain (as mentioned) put onto joints while wearing the extra weight, a small amount of additional weight would force the use to move that much more slowly to essentially not break or damage themselves. What this would be doing would obviously not be a matter of substantial strength gain, but would instead force the wearer to be slow and controlled. And, if the wearer could move ultra fast whilst carrying the specified amount of extra weight, their movements could be substantially speedier upon removal of the weight.
This part of the weight wearing makes sense. It seems to just be kind of a way to demonstrate, "Oh hey, I'm this strong and fast while wearing all of this extra weight...let me take it off and you'll see what I can REALLY do." Since by comparison, even if they were super fast, they'd be moving like a slug compared to what they could do without the weight. I think Rock Lee from Naruto still holds the absolute best weighted clothing/speed reveal in all of anime/manga history; maybe forever. I do imagine that very slow or isometric (static) training with ankle or wrist weights could be effective. Natural movements or holds, and long time under tension. Also, I know my comment is about 2 years late here. 😂

My understanding on weighted vests is that when fighters cut weight they add the vest to there workout to match their previous weight so as to not lose the power from the legs and such that comes from losing weight which results in muscle loss as well. It helps keep the speed of your new weight while keeping the muscle in your legs of your previous weight and come fight day the difference in weight won’t affect your fighting style

What I noticed is a huge development in my control of the muscles, the constant increased tension on my movements forced my brain to make my movements more efficient and improve nerve-muscle connectivity. Be careful though, DO NOT use weights around the day if you are not already fit or you'll injure yourself, joints take a long time to strengthen and you can only increase their load 2-3 times a year by a bit.

    Morale of the Story:
Weighted clothing is useful and smart aslong as its within training and giving your body rest time (Time dependant on your fitness level).Don't go trying to put on weight equal to your own body weight and begin training....No your not physically ready, you have to work your way up as you do in any type of training.A perfect example of a similar scenario is the military, you run in heavy boots aswell as a 45 pound ruck in a course of 2 to 3 months and over the course of time (Not just 2 weeks of slounging around like the study he mentioned) you will get stronger because your body is adapting to a new workload. In conclusion weighted clothing is useful for the physically fit looking to get even more fit now unless your a pt god (which your probably not if your watching this video, including myself just yet)you have to be able to understand your limits and what your body is capable of, otherwise you ineveitbly will hurt yourself.

I know this was posted a year ago but in order for bodies to get used to altitude they have to acclimate, for instance people who climb the Himalayan mountains take time to get their bodies adjusted to the higher altitudes. You were talking about how if you wore ankle and wrist weights it has potential to cause serious harm, now I say this as a weight lifter, it’s not about the weight it’s about the reps, adding let’s say 1 Lbs on each wrist but not ankles and purely ‘acclimate’ the muscle movements to this new weight and build from there. The more you work a muscle the stronger it becomes; I had an injury pertaining to my ball in socket, it was dented in the front and back and they highly recommended surgery, I declined surgery and opted for muscle rehab and spend 3 months strengthening both shoulder muscles. I feel that there is a safe way to doing this

Yes I have a question: so, if it's the nitrogen in our atmosphere that makes the sky blue, and the chlorophyll that makes grass green, then what would create the green skies and blue plants like we see on Namek? Keeping in mind that the atmosphere on Namek is still relatively safe and breathable for humans!

    • @Tassadar237

Possibly some green refraction or reflection gasses in a band like our ozone layer, changing the perceived color of the sky, while only affecting the breathability of the upper atmosphere, which wouldn't be any LESS safe for humans than the upper atmosphere on earth.

you would need to examine what it is about the nitrogen that causes our sky to appear blue. It's not the chemical makeup, it's the particles themselves. Raleigh scattering is what makes our skies blue, but it is also what makes our sunset red, as demonstrated in a brilliant lecture by Walter Lewin. The color can change based on how much of the atmosphere you need to travel through. You might have heard of a phenomenon known as The Green Flash, which occurs just before sundown on a clear day. There's a reason for this. It's actually due to the bending of light around earth, and green light gets bent a little less than red light so you sometimes see a second image of the sun descending in green. The green flash. Little known is that there's actually a full rainbow there, but the orange and yellow are harder to see on days when the green is there, and blend in with the reddening sky on other days. You need the right conditions, and the blue and purple are there as well but you'd never see them against an otherwise blue sky.
Raleigh scattering works the same way. Light gets refracted and all that's left is blue because it gets refracted less. So if the thickness of the particles in the atmosphere were just right, the sky would appear green. This might even mean that there's more oxygen, so while plant life would be diminished, animal life would increase
Now, the plants. Blue plant life is typically rare, due to the advantageous effects of having green chlorophyll. However, there are a few plants that grow in low light situations, that use a tweaked red-anthocyanin to reflect blue light, and absorb everything else. Given the dimmer lighting conditions of a planet with a green sky and the lower levels of Carbon-dioxide, plants might have opted to use this strategy to absorb lower light colors and reflect blue, and better absorb CO2, if they even work based on CO2 They could use nitrogen, perhaps. Also possible is that chlorophyll on that planet simply chose blue, since we don't really know why green chlorophyll is so dominant on our planet. It could just have easily been blue and worked nearly as well.
The real reason is more likely that akira toriyama thought it would be easier to create an alien looking planet by swapping the colors of two commonly drawn items. It's a common trick in digital editing, and you'll notice it if you've ever inverted the colors on any image. Things simply look alien when you swap colors around, so that's probably what he did.

When I was younger I tried Weighted training. Weights consisted of:
    * Kevlar vest if substituting Kevlar for metal plates can simulate a weighted shirt. It's bulky but I have done this.
    * In addition leg ankle weights (not very healthy for your ankles) and wrist weights.
    * ADD to that a 50lb rucksack and you will feel the G. It was around 100 extra pounds.
Now should you do this? I don't recommended. I did this for a little over 5 years starting when I was around 13 and the side effects where that:
    * While I was a lot stronger than I looked due to my bones and muscles becoming denser.
    * When I started having back pain, my chiropractor, who I visited later after years of training , informed me that my spine had compressed and the back neck pain that I felt was due to serious bone compression in my mid back, lower back and neck. More specifically It was between the disks that would handle the natural curvature of the spine and support most of the weight when shifting and siting.
    * Those same disk ligaments had calcified a bit and my range of flexible motion had been reduced by 30%.
    * Another side effect was that my body got used to the weight and when I stopped wearing the weights after years of training my body would want to consume food to reach the weight it was used to.
    * I also gained Hypertension or high blood pressure from these compounding factors.
If you are going to weight train don't do it for extended period of time and when you do have a certificated trainer and visit a physical therapist to monitor these side effects.
I would not recommend weight training until after puberty when you reach your growth peak around age 21-23. Otherwise you can hinder your bone growth or damage your spine.

Wearing weights is something that needs to be eased into. I used a method of starting very small and working my way up to larger weights. I used wrist and ankle weights starting at 2.5 lbs each and over the course of 2 years worked my legs up to 20lbs each and wrists at 5lbs each (the unfortunate factor of the size of the weights make the wrists very difficult to get away with in a normal day, going to work/school so the increase just couldn't be practically done). Whenever i started to feel like the weights weren't there anymore I bumped up the weight, naturally being extremely careful whenever doing this and training. After a while the punches and kicks felt normal and I could pick up the speed/power, even started to spar with the 20lb weights having to really pull my kicks whenever kicking at someone so I didn't hurt them. Finally I took them off when I started to compete and I can tell you with the ankle weights specifically I felt incredibly fast, to a point where it was difficult to control. I believe the excess strain can be caused by being headstrong and starting with high weights, something like this takes time. I would imagine that Goku didnt just decide to throw on all that weight at once, or maybe he did... he is a bit of a psychopath...

Goku's shirt is totally plausible if you take the Mythbusters' approach and try to replicate the results.
190 cubic inches of tungsten is about 60kg. The shirt Goku wore definitely looks much thicker than a regular shirt, and there's nothing saying it has to be made like a regular shirt, requiring a specific fabric with an enormous density.
If you were able to disperse the metal over the shirt's surface area, you can start to get an idea of how thick the shirt would have to be. I think you could store the weight across the shirt by having a cell/quilted like structure, holding crushed tungsten. Much like weighted blankets are made. This would hold the weight, as well as allow for movement flexibility. You can quibble about specifics, but this is the general idea.
Based off of one of my shirts, I used a surface area of 1000 sq inches, because that was a good deal smaller than my 1200 sq inch large shirt I used as a reference. If you divide that 190 cu inch by 1000, the tungsten would be .19" thick, uniformly across the surface area of the shirt.
Since this is if it was a solid sheet, I assumed that 25% of the shirt's area would be taken up by the quilting pattern. This would consolidate the tungsten to 75% of the surface area, pushing up the thickness a bit. Meaning that the shirt would be about .25 inches thick.
We don't see a quilted pattern. So let's assume, like a weighted blanket, that there is a durable exterior layer that masks and protects the structure underneath.
I think Goku's shirt could totally pass for 1/4" thick and would be flexible, yet difficult enough to move around in to explain his difficulty taking it off.
There you have it, a 60kg tungsten weighted shirt that is a plausible solution for Goku's training undergarment.

Hey Kyle, I went through your videos and noticed something very sad. I’m appalled, APPALLED I SAY, that you haven’t done a video on the physics of the helicarrier. You must rectify this with haste!
Back to the video, you are correct. In exercise physiology, it is all about internal adaptation to external work, defined as W=FxD. In that regard, his muscles would definitely have to increase in CSA to adapt. With that being said, it’s not humanly possible to hit this for one reason: CSA.
In studies comparing body builders to recreational lifters and sedentary individuals, body builders and recreational lifters have no difference in cross-sectional area but both are significantly higher than sedentary. The difference between body builders and recreational lifters is an increase in fiber count. It could be hyperplasia but that is still a hypothetical based on limited evidence.
Even with inhibition of myostatin, the “brake system” to muscle growth, there is still a physiological ceiling.
I’m also happy you brought up the articles showing no meaningful effect of weighted clothes. Similar to the “altitude simulating masks” and sauna suits, the training adaptation is mitigated by reduced training capacity, to wit, you’re restraining your training and therefore minimizing adaptation. Not to mention, they look like fools.
...Helicarrier! Do it! Do it now!

Is it wrong that I misread "heli-carrier" as "hair care" for just a second?

My best friend is a cross country runner with a full ride from his college and he uses altitude masks there’s got to be some benefits at that level right? Where he’s still running the same distance and uses one every day he just tries to do it to acclimate to less oxygen per breath.

Altitude masks have little to no benefit whatsoever. The person must also live in high altitude atmosphere in order to gain the benefits. The mask is, however, great at identifying tools in the gym.

I'm fairly sure he's done a Shield Helicarrier video already and concluded that any cities that it passed over would be having a very bad day.

I want to put my 2 cents in:
So at one point, i was training for the ninja warrior competition, and to help me, my work let me wear some ankle and wrist weights. Each one had a total of 10 lbs. I didn't do anything too strenuous, just did the usual walking around, lifting up my arms as needed, etc. After about 8 hours of constant use, i gotta say the effects were amazing. I took them off and immediately i felt as light as a feather. Each step, my legs felt like they had much more power behind them then they usually did that i almost felt like i was just about to break into sprint with each step.
    Now the downsides:
    1. They are very clunky. It may just have been the brand i was using, but it had cloth with pockets for sand packets to increase that weight. Almost looked like the cusps you would see in old cartoons that came with ball and chains. This made some delicate tasks very hard to do. Not to mention they weren't very tight, so they would slip up and down your arm as you moved it around.
    2. The cloth was very irritating. To increase their durability they were made with the same stuff you would see on laptop bags or backpacks. Which made it very scratchy and irritating on your skin.
    3. Running was practically impossible. With the irritating cloth, the constant movement up and down your legs, not to mention the clunky style, they would constantly hit against each other as you run, and even set you off balance a lot.
