  • Landing a DC-9/MD-80 at Midway Island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, on our way from Tokyo to Kingman, Arizona. August 2010.
A former U.S. Navy base, famous for the "Battle of Midway," it is now a wildlife sanctuary and not open to the public.
It is home to about two million Albatrosses that nest there.

Spent a year of my life on Midway back in 1974/75. Great duty station!

Thanks for posting! I was born there, was able to return to work for MPC, and sadly have watched FW abuse their power. They wee mandated my an executive order to keep Midway open to the public, which if they were cooperative in the cooperative agreement Midway would still be open and working to this day. I appreciate any aerial views I get to see now because flying into Midway, my actual place of birth, has always bright tears to my eyes. I think the emotional response starts from being a Navy brat, when the question, where are you from, can only be answered with your birthplace. Then to be be from a place that is so unique, so remote, so few are from, so hard to get to, and to be told you are not allowed to go to back, is beyond heartbreaking. Midway is my soul and is a part of me in a way that cannot be explained. I wish you had been able to enjoy her beauty, birds, and uniqueness.

So sorry you are not allowed to go there. Perhaps you could volunteer as a "bird counter" once a year. Normally I'm told that is the only way to get there.
I actually got to see a lot of the island. We went in there for 8 flights and spent all day each time. Landing before sunup and taking off after sundown to avoid the birds.
It's a beautiful place. Try this website; friendsofmidway.org/get-involved/

Coral Kings Dive Club ftw! Got my PADI Underwater Photography, Equipment Technician and Hunting certs there. Chief, if you're still around ... I LOVED your shell collection. We even have matching finger slices as badges ... though I didn't get mine from a Stonefish bite!

Amazing that battles were fought for such a seemingly unimportant place!

It was a diversion and a trap, trying to lure the American aircraft carriers to defend the island so they could be destroyed.
Didn't work out well for the Japanese Navy.

@@hangmen71 Thank you. I probably knew that, but i have seen so many documentaries. In Vietnam, units fought for weeks for so-called important hills. When the battles were over they packed up and left and the enemy moved back in.

      I totally agree.
The history of mankind is warfare. So sad.

One of the best fishing area’s in the world until they made it a Sanctuary, probably for the better though…

Was that a fuel stop? How much traffic does that airstrip see annually?

    • @hangmen71
      @hangmen71  Před měsícem +2

Yes, we stopped for fuel and rested for the day and flew out after dark when the birds don't fly so much.
They don't see much traffic. We were there with special permission. This was about 2010. We paid $20 per gallon for the gas.

How did you end up here? This is like Bucket List #1 for me.

    • @hangmen71

It was a fuel stop from Tokyo to the west coast, ferrying the MD-80 empty. It was being purchased for parts by Allegiant Airlines. The public is not allowed there.

Where did you fly in from?
