    Hey John, I used BONDO for my custom PC case bezels, until somebody who repairs boat hulls educated me about a better product, EVERCOAT's EVERGLASS "short hair reinforced body filler" It does require a separate BLUE CREAM HARDENER when mixing.
    *It has kevlar strands, which helps material flex under stress, so it wont crack over time.
    *Dries FASTER than BONDO (5 minutes)
    *Thicker consistency than BONDO, which also expands as it cures, that is why you get those cracks, craters from air pockets
    Instead of the Plexiglass, try LEXAN instead, it won't crack or splitter when you cut / drill it....and I know that you're trying to save few bucks and buy materials local versus ordering online, so this was just food for thought for future projects... Thanks again for everything!

    You really had a much better approach to using the filler on this one. I use the grater before the filler sets up fully. It came out great. Nice job

      I just put a link for the Szabo's simpsons restore on the Quantum restore part 7 where he prints the side art. If you haven't seen it, I think you should take a look. Really nice setup. Thanks John keep up the awesome work you're doing : )

    Hey John. Fill the cavity on your side cutters with silicone. Once it is dry, cut down the center with your razor knife. The silicone will hold whatever you are cutting. No staples in the eye!

    Love these restoration vids. I would love to find my favorite arcades and spend time in the garage to fix them up. Thanks for the inspiration.

    I'm looking forward to more episodes of the Quantum restore. I also just finished bondo work on my Galaga. Watching John do it in multiple videos gave me the confidence to tackle it and it came out great! I'm ready for another restore project!

    Great vid once again. I've got a tip if you'll entertain it. You should have went with the biscuit joiner and scabbed a piece in. That bondo is a great filler, but it's to brittle to use stand alone to make corners. Ultimately it will fail. Keep up the good work, love your vids.

    • @Johnsarcade
      @Johnsarcade  Před 8 lety

      +Sausage Kings of Pittsburg It wasn't really stand alone. There was a lot of wood on the outside, really.

  • @gingertom64
    @gingertom64 Před 8 lety +3

    I think you would have been better with the biscuit jointer, and cut off a larger part of the corner to get two biscuits in. If you catch that corner it will always be a weak point that will easily break off. Love your show though.

    • @Johnsarcade
      @Johnsarcade  Před 8 lety

      +gingertom64 maybe. :) most of the outside corner was there. So, was really building most of the inside.

  • @8BitLife69
    @8BitLife69 Před 8 lety +1

    I prefer to remove the affected area in one straight cut, and cut a new section using either the other side if good as a template, or a template made from a known good one. Then I put them together using dowels/biscuits and wood glue. Use bondo on the joint to hide it. Bondo is NOT strong enough for this purpose, and will snap off the first time it catches an edge, or someone boots it.

    • @Johnsarcade
      @Johnsarcade  Před 8 lety

      +8BitLife I really think this worked in THIS application. There was a lot of wood left on the outside. I was just filling in one side of it. I'm glad I did it the way I did.

    I would fix that backdoor at least a bit, but not cut a new one. Perfect time to practice there with your biscuit jointer on the lower corners that are missing. I think you have not used it in your videos yet. Perfect time to try it out on that backdoor.
    And good to see you back in garage! If you go all out on the cabinet it will look gorgeous with the sideart.

  • @jupreindeer
    @jupreindeer Před 8 lety +1

    Swear. _If I ever_ make it out to the East Coast, _I will_ be bringing a poster that goes something along the lines of *'Safety first'* with me. You can hang it on your garage wall to endlessly nag about *not* doing things _'the quick way'_.
    Hey...I'd love to come out there during one of those arcade events at that legendary place, some year. But...I just don't see myself ever hopping a plane and all that. _'Hesitancy. Excuse. Bla-bla-bla.'_ Eh...who knows. Maybe when a smart car can do 55 MPH and I get the budget under control. Maybe make the first real road trip of my life would be worth it.

    Hey John! I just wanted to let you know I used your ultimate Craigslist search keywords and gound a all original Atari Battlezone thats super clean but should get new sideart because of a tear and a few scratches for only 60 dollars. The guy I got it from told me the vector monitor didnt work and that he had the game since 1987 and he picked it up at a auction and was his only game ever. So from your advice I did not plug it in or mess around with it at his house I just gave him the cash and away. I went home opened it up and to my delight I discoverd he did not have the monitor hooked up to the wiring harness.Im thinking it may of disconected from all the years of moving it around. I hooked it up and it works perfectly! Thanks for the great show and tips!

    It would have been quicker to cut it out and stronger to join it with the jointer.

  • @MaximRecoil
    @MaximRecoil Před 7 lety

    Creating structures isn't what Bondo is for. Obviously the best way to do it is to join new wood to the damaged area, but if you're going to use plastic body filler, you should at least use something like Everglass (it is like Bondo but with glass fibers for reinforcement). Create the rough shape with Everglass and then finish it off with Bondo (because Bondo sands easier).

    Hey, John! Glad to see the weather's getting nice for you again over in New England! I'm glad to see that you're able to continue with the Quantum restore! Great work and great vid! By the way, it's funny that you just released a video with lots of bondo work and sanding, because I've currently been prepping up a dresser i got from a friend for painting and I chose to use bondo based on your advice (in addition to wood putty of course :) ) for the repair work and protecting the particleboard edges, because I want it to be strong and look fantastic! And even though our projects are completely different, watching your vids and seeing the joy you take in all this is inspiring to me! Thank you so much, pal! Oh, and I was wondering about one more thing if you don't mind. What is your opinion of using wood putty and bondo on the edges of wood for protection? I know the t-molding for arcade cabinets is great for that, but I wanted to go the extra mile and add durability, and I think it turned out great! And it's all thanks to you! You're Awesome! :D

    • @Johnsarcade
      @Johnsarcade  Před 8 lety

      +Jeremy Glass (MrDemonsushi) Awesome, Jeremy! I really don't have a lot of experience with Wood putty. So, not sure! I guess bondo on the edges of wood is fine, just sand it REAL smooth,

  • @Tron1731
    @Tron1731 Před 8 lety

    use duraglass its way stronger than bondo dont be afraid to just use a piece of card board trace out good side and cut out new piece wood screw it to inside of corner but you did a nice job

  • @danab26
    @danab26 Před 8 lety

    you could of made walls on both sides and on the bottom with wood wrapped in clear tape so the bondo will not stick to them and mix your bondo and pour it inside the cavity
    would of been alot cleaner and easier for you to do your finish work i just use something like a pencil or whatever to stick in the bondo and wiggle to remove any air pockets after its inside the form

    Hi John, thanks to your videos I have been able to learn so much about restoring arcade cabinets. I recently bought a cab from my local arcade, a generic one that had seen better days. There are two extended pieces at the bottom front of the cab that are broken, would you recommend the biscuit jointer method or the bondo method?

    Great work, been waiting for another Quantum Video :)
    Not sure if its the same in person, but on the video that corner looks way different to the other side ?
    I would measure each point of both sides to make sure the one you recreated is correct.
    Anyway good to see you back out in the garage, Quantum will look good in place of Computer Space when you sell it soon LOL.
    Will also fill that area up better !
