  • Highlights of the former undisputed world Heavyweight champion. INGO'S BINGO!
Ingemar Johansson - Was a Swedish boxer and former heavyweight champion of the world. Johansson was the fifth heavyweight champion born outside the United States. In 1959 he defeated Floyd Patterson by TKO in the third round, after flooring Patterson seven times in that round, to win the World Heavyweight Championship. As a result, Johansson was awarded the Hickok Belt as top professional athlete of the year - the only non-American to do so in the belt's entire 27-year existence - and was named the Associated Press Male Athlete of the Year and Sports Illustrated magazine's "Sportsman of the Year". He holds notable victories over Floyd Patterson, Eddie Machen, Joe Bygraves (twice), Henry Cooper, Brian London, Dick Richardson, and Joe Erskine among others.

But they remained friends till they both ended up with Alzheimers.

I think his all-time rating was marred by his training (or lack thereof). He had legit skills for his time. He just seemed to lose interest.

I saw some guy list him in the top ten worst fighters to hold the heavyweight title and I had to come back here to assure myself that he was as good as I remember. I gave that guy the biggest load of fertilizer ever sold west of the Mississippi river. I mean his series with patterson is my favorite of any weight class in history. The pulverizing force he had in both hands just made him such a danger to anyman he stepped into the ring with that you just have to wonder what it couldve been like if he fought liston or Cleveland williams what wouldve unfolded. Nevertheless he is a great but sadly forgotten champion.

If you’re training for self defense then it’s best to be versed in all four of the major martial arts (Boxing, Muay Thai, BJJ, and Wrestling) as well as the unifying meta-art that is MMA. At the very least, on top of your boxing, you should train in one grappling art at minimum, ideally wrestling so you at least know how to prevent people from just grabbing you and taking you down to the ground and thus rendering your boxing useless. BJJ or Judo are acceptable alternates as well. But it’s best to be versed in all four of the arts I mentioned above, plus the meta-art of MMA, because only then do you have a complete mastery of combat in both the striking and grappling aspects and the interplay between both aspects in a comprehensive sense

Johansson deserved more credit than he received but even he admitted that he could not have beaten Liston, certainly not the Liston of the 50's and the early 60's. Don't know about Cleveland Williams. Sure Cleveland was quite fast and certainly an extremely dangerous hitter himself and ought to be favourite in such a match up, but may be was also a bit more open than Liston to a dangerous counter punch.

Tyson admitted he wouldn't have beaten Ali and so did Wladimir Klitschko. Jeffries said he wouldn't have beaten Johnson on the best day of his life and Johnson said Jeffries was at one point "the best of them all" as well. Humility is a great trait, but I wouldn't take that as 100% proof he wouldn't have had a chance against Liston. Johansson hit like a mack-10 and he could do it all night long. Eddie Machen went the full 12 with Liston and drew Williams, but got murdered in 1 by Johansson. Williams was also ko'd cold in 3 rounds by a 178lb guy with 16 losses and 8 of his 12 career losses (non-4 rounders) were by ko/tko, so I wouldn't bet the house on him flattening Johansson, either. I'm not saying I wouldn't favor Liston or Williams --- two of the most naturally physically gifted fighters ever --- over Johansson, but Johansson had a very unique style (using his palms to block, not corkscrewing a lot of his punches, wide uppercuts, and using his left hand to measure as well as "sheep heard" his opponent for his right hand) and the only guy he fought that he didn't definitively pulp in his short career was Floyd Patterson --- who was himself an anomaly (peek-a-boo style with the real fastest hands in heavyweight history in the early 60's? There was nobody you could work with to properly prepare for him, back then). It's too bad Johansson left the sport so early. Both fights would've been cool to see.

That’s a great comparison, I do see the similarity. In a relative p4p sense though of course - Wilder is obviously much bigger and significantly more powerful, but Wilder is a modern super-heavy and Johansson, like most heavyweights from back then, would be considered either a cruiserweight if not even a light heavyweight by modern standards. Epic fantasy matchups would be Johansson versus fellow old-time HW power sluggers who weighed south of 200 in Dempsey and Marciano
