    Buying new gear is always a risk, will it be the solution we hoped for, or will we regret it. Expensive is not always better. In this video I give my first unbiased impressions of my new acquisition, the Fujifilm GFX100s.
    I take it out close to home and photograph some little frozen cascades, and some beautiful backlit forest scenes.
    Do I regret it?

      I totally agree, I have seen the GFX 100s in the show room and it is amazing. There’s no way that a medium camera is not better than an APSC camera. It’s like saying better running shoes are not gonna make your butter runner, because of course, that better shoes will make you a better runner and better tools will make you a better artist.

    Wowzers!!! Welcome to Fuji. I'm still working with my newish X-T5 after several years with its older brother the X-T3. Adam must have really taunted you with his while you both were shooting in Spain. I absolutely loved the shot with the ice and the water running beneath it. The clarity and detail is mind boggling. I purchased the GFX100s last year and could not be happier. For majority of my work I use Canon, but every time I go to take my own photo's I want to use the Fuji. I found its menu system intuitive, image and lense quality is superb. On the weight side I do not find it any heavier than using Canon R5/R3. I have far more leeway with the 16bit raw files compared to 14bit when processing. It doesn't fall apart as easily, especially in sky colors and BW image creations. very much reduced color bending and far more control when using gradients. Thats my personal experience and i have read many gfx users saying that GFX files raw are a joy to process. I have attributed that to the 16bit raw files when i compared to that my other 14bit camera raw files. Peace.

    You made the right choice Alister. I purchased the GFX50SII last year and could not be happier. 50mp all I need for my landscape photography and my 24" x 36" prints look wonderful. When I watched your video last week on aspect ratios, I thought, Alister needs a GFX. Now you got one! As you get more used to the camera and learn how to set it up, think about some video(s) on that aspect. I have struggled to find any good information online on basic setup recommendations. Read the manual, but, it is a manual. I know that over the years with my Canon and Nikon DSLRs, Canon and Sony mirror-less and now the Fuijifilm, seeing how others set up their cameras is always helpful. Happy where I am at now but always looking for suggestions and tips. Glad to hear the book is ready for shipping and cannot wait to get my pre-order. Love you channel and always find your videos informative and inspirational. Might have already gotten mentioned, but as a long lens shooter, I recommend a lens plate for the 100-200mm and not a plate on the camera body for tripod mounting when using it. Thank you.

No one spends money on the tools unless they don’t know what they to accomplish. I owed the D800 and that camera was phenomenal. She went with me to France and Venice. I’m glad the Fuji made MF’s for those who appreciate high end craftsmanship quality with patients.

    I went to the GFX 100s a little over a year ago. I also have a Z7, but it rarely gets used anymore. The biggest struggle I have between the Fuji and the Nikon is that the two cameras are backwards in the way lenses mount and switch position. The GFX 100S looks so nice for landscape photography! I shoot Sony and do both landscapes and wildlife, so for my needs I think I'm in a very nice ecosystem with a lot of great lenses to choose from. I also love hiking, and prefer to use versatile zoom lenses since I don't like switching lenses in the field. I have both the Tamron 28-200 and 50-400, and I absolutely love them. I just purchased a Nikon Z6 II after using a D7200 for quite a while. I still own the D7200 as I want it's extra crop factor in some situations. It's just been days since I made the purchase and I'm forcing myself by taking the Z6 II only, so that I'll get used to it. I am absolutely impressed by the sensor but there are a lot of things I miss in DSLR. I somehow find it easier to nail the exposure on the DSLR better than the mirror less. I'm sure I will understand the camera more and will get used to it. I wanted to switch to Sony, but I rented a Sony A7 III recently and I missed the menu system and the familiarity of Nikon and I had some full frame lenses with the D7200 also.

    I just got the GFX 50s II after shooting with the 5DSR for years. Even though the resolution is the same, the colors and clarity are unreal even with the less expensive 35-70mm lens. I've found it's even lighter than the 5DSR (or R5) with the 24-70mm f/2.8 II, so I'm more likely to take it hiking vs. not, something I'd considered in my comparison of the systems. Knowing that the focal lengths are limited is the reason why I'll still keep the 5DSR so that I can shoot those 11-24mm and 100-400mm lenses when the situation calls for it. I'll just migrate over more slowly to the GFX and add lenses over time rather than all at once. Glad you're enjoying it so far. The aspect ratio previews are awesome, as are the film sims.

    Subscribed. Like you, I love the system. I have been using GFX for a few years now, upgrading from the original 50S to the 100S. You mention all the key pros and cons. My biggest issue with the system is/was the weight of it. I am in my 60s with a slightly dodgy back and I find taking the camera, my landscape trinity (20-35, 45-100, 100-200), and suitably strong tripod on a long hike, pretty tiring. My initial solution was to use my Fujifilm X-T system as the lightweight option, but taking 2 camera systems on holiday with me is a right PITA. My current evolved solution over the years is to have 2 lens trinities, sacrificing some capability for a lighter load. So the long hike trinity is the 20-35, 35-70 and an adapted Pentax 645 150mm. Much lighter (2.7 kilos), in fact the same weight as my X-T red badge solution. The Pentax is the weak point, and the lack of a properly long, lightweight telephoto a big miss in the GF lens line up. But at least, with 102 mp, a 100% crop or 2x zoom still gives you a decent 25 mp file.

    The Fuji GFX 100s does sound like a great camera and I hope you enjoy. However, which ever way you look it, it is still a hefty camera and system and I am not sure I would want to lug it up mountains. As for Fuji Velvia, it was all the craze when I first started getting into photography in the early 90's. To be honest I was never a fan, as I felt the colours were saturated to the point where they looked garish to me. But then that is me. Most people loved the colours.

    • @larryjohnson1451
      @larryjohnson1451 Před rokem

      I shot 6x7 medium format for 14 years and after one 220 roll of Velvia I had the same sensation you spoke of. Customers liked the hyper-color but I was uncomfortable with it. Within a few weeks I standardized on Provia F and shot that until I eventually went over to full frame Nikon digital. The busy-ness of having to process film and then having to do (and pay for) the big drum scans I used for printing the large prints I sold was too much overhead, and further added to the delays in getting a shot under glass. I'm intrigued by the GFX gear but not ready financially to make the plunge.

    One question for all other GFX users: Do you use the 16Bit Raw? How are your experience? So many reviewers say there is no difference between 14 and 16 Bit. But my experience is there is one. Especially in shots with delicate subdue light and colours (i.e. sunrise/sunset with fog/mist) I have compared it and from my point of view the colours can be better worked with in post.
