The Blacksmith (1922) - Buster Keaton (music score by Angelin Fonda)

  • Soundtrack for one of Buster Keaton's shorts - The Blacksmith (1922). I can't explain with words why I have chosen this one. I guess I just pointed this film with my finger and started to compose music for it. And I didn't regret about it. The more I watched, the more I laughed.
I hope my music makes a better comic effect, I tried to do so. And I always try.
P.S. Please don't use music without permission and don't violate copyright. I keep eye on it.

The visual quality is very good in this original B & W print. But, what struck me is the enchanting musical score by Angelin Fonda. This music fits the film like a hand in glove. Bravo. Actually, most silent films were distributed with sheet music that was played by local orchestras in the larger theaters, and many of the smaller ones. When soundtracks came along on the film, thousands of professional musicians were put out of work. The "tinkling piano" sound associated with silent films was actually based on a spoof made years later, and is no more accurate than the two circles that denote looking through binoculars in movies.

Charlie Chaplin got a lot of criticism for adding the voice over narration to
"The Gold Rush" in the 40s, and it was his own film.
Sometimes artistic license is a tricky thing.
      Somebody took Fritz Lang's
"Metropolis", colorized it, and added a rock soundtrack. I didn't like it at all.
Anybody who was around in 1980 probably remembers
      "Hooked on Classics"
They took snippets of Bach, Mozart, Beethoven and others and set it to the disco boom boom beat to use as soundtracks for working out.
I doubt if anybody who loves classical music had anything good to say.
Messing around with somebody else's work is kind of a mine field.
The music on this one is OK
because it fits and it's not intrusive.
Jay Z or Marilyn Manson would not have been a good choice.

I absolutely adore the music in this, the parts where he’s swinging the sledgehammer and pulling the motor by the rope with the cymbals (I think they’re cymbals) in time of the hits as well the piano notes when his hat jumps up and flips around is great
