- It is such a shame to hack a loaf into door wedges having put so much time, love and patience into making it in the first place. Here's how to cut your loaf into perfect slices every time.

Apologies for the Earthquake Cam! 😂 shaky!!
Have you bought a proper tripod yet? At least with the little one on the table, you demonstrate that things move a lot more than people realize!
Oh, hey, while I'm at it, are there any "cardinal sins" to avoid using fresh bread? Such as making French Toast (lost bread) or bread pudding with something yo baked the day before, in stead of using a slightly stale loaf?
"Quake-cam".
You know, there could actually be a market for that.
Thanks for not having the pencil ✏️ behind your ear. It's cringe
Need to practice this method. My slices are either doorstops or see through wafers
It's been 4 years but this was relevant to me today! Thank you, wise bread wizard.
This video is... The best thing since sliced bread. Had to go there 😂 Keep it up Jack!
When Will I Learn? 🤣!
😏ohhhhhh 😄
😁
For some of us it's the best thing BEFORE sliced bread haha.
As simple as the topic sounds it likely relieves stress for countless folks ... including me. Uh, never considered a curved blade. Once again Jack comes to the rescue to make the world a little better. Thanks Jack!
Thank you for this video. I watched Jamie Oliver's as well, but he so advanced he didn't explain any newbie issues at all. I learned a lot from this video.
Jamie who? 😬😬😬
Jamie Oliver the chef haha
Big thanks for this video Jack. For several years I've used a 30.5cm Hygiplas serrated slicer knife because I baked loaves which were big and the usually available bread knives were a bit short. The trouble was it is sharp pointed and tended to rip into the bread. Since seeing this video, I checked out the Victorinox bread knife and the alternative round ended pastry knife against other knives. This was at Nisbets catering shop. Just by feeling the edges of different makes I could tell that the Victorinox was ultra sharp, smooth and flowing. I asked for one as a birthday present recently and used it yesterday for the first time. Absolutely brilliant. It went through the bread, which was made yesterday, sooo easily - a new experience.
By the way, although I'm recommending Nisbets and Victorinox I have no connection with either. I'm in my 70s and retired.
YES! Happy Birthday Royksk 🍾
I'm impressed at how thin you get those slices. A good knife sure does make a difference!
Sure does 👊🏻
Why am I watching bread cutting at 12:30am. Glad to be here though
Wow - I am also watching at 12.30am.....
my regular midnight Bake with Jack fix - so informative and entertaining!
Why you asking us. Ask yourself
I bought myself a great bread knife and chopping board. I kept my shoulders loose. No wonky slices!! Your videos are as helpful as they are fun to watch. You are just too adorable. Which makes me wonder--who is the stinker that down-voted this video?? 😃
Now there are 11 stinkers! Not me!
Jack, this is absolutely brilliant. I made my very first loaf of bread this week and was having a really hard time trying to slice it, most of my slices ending up shredded, uneven or super thick. I used the tips from your video and can't believe the difference just a few simple techniques can make to slicing, this has completely changed the result and I've now cut several perfect slices like a pro. Thanks for posting, I'm now subbed. Cheers!
Thanks Jack. I always blamed being left-handed for my wonky bread carving . Guess I can't now☺ . Seriously though thank you for this.
😂 absolutely not, im a lefty and proud 👊🏻
Bake with Jack Me, too! I actually love being left-handed.
I learned another tip that has served me well for years. When you are slicing, keep your eye on the loaf, not on the slice. This will give you an even slice every time. Works for cheese, too, and anything else you cut slices from, such as a log or a block. (Thinking cheese or meat here, not wood,) ☺️
A very useful video, well presented as always.
My bread knife was bought by my mum in 1966. It has the same serrations as yours, though not curved. Every so often I give it a few licks with the Steel.
I do use a glass board though and will be looking into buying a wooden one, specifically for bread.
My mother taught me that--don't push or force the cut. Let the knife do the work.
It was really useful seeing you do the bad slices, and not just the good ones.
I want thank you so very much for showing me how to properly slice bread. I’ve been frustrated that I couldn’t seem to consistently slice bread evenly - some slices we’re thicker on the bottom or top, or one side would be thicker than the other and sometimes perfect, yet I couldn’t be consistent and didn’t know why. From watching your video I figured out that I was cutting on my island counter - which was too high, and that my feet were not solidly grounded. After correcting the height to a lower table and setting my feet and body correctly I just cut a whole loaf with 90% looking evenly sliced! You are the best!
I always learn something from Jack's videos...Thanks Jack!
Yesss... this video serves the purpose... with all the humour and everything... and the sound of the old bread is adding more fun to it.
After watching this I've change my mind about buying a bread slicer. I think I should be able to do this with practice...really, really. 8-)
Thank you for this guide! Slicing the bread evenly and nicely is often the hardest part...
Thanks Jack, I have 2 bread knives as they are not all equal!!! That's one thing I don't mind spending money on and that's knives. They sure cut down on time and presentation is always on point. 💝💝
Bea Long well worth the investment!!
A small coffee shop orders their sourdough bread from me and they like it sliced. I make an 8” square loaf and I have a heck of a time getting the slices nice and even. I will apply these tips and hopefully improve my method. They serve avocado toast on the bread and order between 6-9 loaves each week.
So satisfying seeing them so perfect ☺️🙌 thanks for the tip! Very helpful 👍
Hey Jack - To preserve freshness I slice a loaf of bread from the middle, never from the end. After cutting the amount of slices needed (from both halves to keep things symmetric) simply bring the two partial loaves’ cut ends together and wrap the “loaf” firmly in plastic film. It will have the appearance of a whole loaf, albeit smaller, and will remain fresher longer.
Nice tip, and yes, keeping things symmetrical and s a MUST 🤯
Thanks for the great tips. I tried them and they worked.
I was in awe of the ladies who buttered the loaf and then cut it into perfect slices whilst hugging it to their chests. Just amazing!!
Seems so simple yet I was making one big mistake. I have been cutting my bread on the kitchen counter, not the table which is lower and therefore allows me to cut it with this technique.
Thanks mate, cheers!
Thanks! Lol I loved the earthquake cam- it was very immersive!
OMG! This totally works! I have just tried straightening my hacked about loaf, and then cut a perfect slice! Already had a great knife and wooden board. Just had a rubbish technique. I love you Jack! 🤗
Just stand like golf... 😜 🏌️♀️
This is the reason I f*ing LOVE youtube :D
This video was definitely for me! Thank you Jack.
Brilliant. My hubby cringes at how I cut bread! I’m going to practice.
i discovered your channel and immediately subbed! you're so talented and creative. nice videos 👌🏻
Thank youuuuuu! ☺️☺️☺️
You crack me up Jack! Bit, seriously, I have that same knife and it is truly excellent for slicing bread. Thanks for your entertaining videos. 👍
Somebody needs to translate this from British into American for me hahaha, this dude is very British and it's adorable.
Thank you for this video! I've been making homemade bread for years now, but only recently started making sandwich bread, which my girls love, but I was cutting SO MANY wonky slices. Now, hopefully, they won't have to endure my inept slicing of bread. :)
Nailed it. Simple and easily illustrated. Don't bother watching anything else, this is the bomb.
This was very informative. Clearly I don’t have the right knife because I can’t get through the bottom crust. Please show how to cut a boule. That is the shape I have been making. Enjoying your videos, Jack!
This was really helpful, thanks 😌
Finally there is someone who made a video on this.. thanks a lot.. 😁
Wow! Just watched your video and was totally impressed. Took a snapshot of that bad bread knife, searched it out on the internet and bought it. I only wanted the one that you use! Haha! Thank you for this life changing knowledge. :)
Oh god no.
Lolol I can cut good slices even when pressing down heavily into the loaf!
It's kinda like a mistake I didn't realize I was doing all these while, till I saw your video...and yet I mastered the art of slicing toast even when pressing downwards and the loaf is distorted, haha.
You are so informatively and professionally adorable. Like you could kick butt and prepare crab Rangoon at the same time.
Great video Jack - you're such a talented presenter! Any tips on how I can use my home milled wheatflour? Can I use it straight away??
FlowerGrower Smith yes I think so, just go for it, I bet it will be delicious!
FlowerGrower Smith oh and thank you ☺️👌🏻
as a piece of bread I find this viedo..... ehh interesting...
This was very helpful thanks!
I swear I think I'm seeing a young chef Ramsey, but definitely cuter. Lol thanks for the tips
If you are really particular about the texture of the slices, you could use a very(!) sharp chefs knife (no serrations) and little pressure the make the crust and inside crumb look even cleaner. Serrated knifes leave a little rough surface, compared to an knife without serrations (especially the pointed serrations), but do cut a loaf of bread easier and quicker.
What 3-10 videos would you recommend first for the ABSOLUTE BEGINNER? Obviously this is one of them, but which other videos of yours would you recommend as essentials before I try making bread?
I use and electric knife to cut my bread. Easy. But, I don’t always have my electric knife with me. So, I really appreciate this video. Thanks, Jack.
Before seeing this I thought a bread knife was a bread knife, is there really any difference between them. Then when I saw yours go through that loaf with ease compared to mine that hacked and tore my beautiful creation I decided to upgrade. My new knife may have cost more than my current knife block set but it really is worth it. Cuts perfectly and precisely each time, even a 3 day old loaf. A must have for home bakers!
Cutting a bread baked in a tin is not so difficult. CXould you please show us how to properly cut a large boule?
Traditionally on the edge (holding it to the breast, a technique lost in the fifties here)
Many thanks! Now I see what I'm doing wrong, and I need a better bread knife 😁
Cheers!
Ah yes. Watching this while making my first loaf of bread. Thanks for starting me off right!
Such a great birthday gift from your brother ❤
I once read a book written by a delicatessen owner who explained that he could tell who would be able to slice smoked salmon correctly, by simply observing them trying to cut a slice of bread. If you don't understand how your knife works, you will never be able to use it properly. Some knives have a chamfer on the cutting edge and this needs to be compensated for - i.e., look at your knife carefully before you use it.
Watching people slice bread incorrectly drives me crazy because it only takes a couple of minutes to master the technique. My brother's grown-up children are completely fascinated by the fact I can slice bread accurately - and one of them is training to be a doctor, which means she should be pretty handy with a knife.
What hould you cover your bread with after it is baked and cooled for storage?
Great work.
Can't cut bread to save my life.
Will do as you say. Wish me luck.
Rhea Bellamy good luck!!
I'm learning loads of stuff watching these videos! Thanks so much for all the effort you've gone to! PS: When you say "YESS!" you remind me of Brain from "Pinky and the Brain" :)
How do you keep your cut straight? I can't keep my bottom and top the same width
sat on the cat HAHAHA omg dead ROFL thanks for the tips!
Wow I am REALLY impressed. A Victorinox Grand Maître Bread Knife, £110.
Thanks Jack! Do you have any advice on cutting sourdough boule? They are so big and crusty on the outside I almost cut my finger off one time while cutting the bread! Thank you!
Do the same thing! Just take it easy and don’t push down, make a groove with the knife first so it doesn’t slide 👍🏻
You're hilarious and that was awesome!!! Thank you so muchly 🙂
What do ya know! I can now cut bread like Jack. Great tip. As all yours are.
Thank you🙏🏻🙏🏻
Jack's description of cutting bread reminds me of my father's similar instructions on cutting lumber with a hand saw. 🔪
Clear as mud. You made it look easy 😂
I admit I've wished to have one of those fancy bakery bread slicing machines at home... Probably exerting too much force, will try with less.
Love this channel and ABSOLUTELY LOVE YOU😍
KIMCHI GODDESS thank you ☺️☺️☺️
What if you actually bake the kind of soft, fluffy bread that most people prefer for sandwiches instead of bread that sounds like you’re sawing through wood? How do you cut that kind without squashing it?
Thanks bro
4:30 My reaction every time I get it right
Thanks for the fundamentals!
😜 my pleasure
Which Victorinox bread knife? There are so many options. Sorry, a newbie myself.
There are options on amazon for Fibrox (plastic handle versus wood) and two or three diff sizes. One 10” and 10 1/4” and 8” and I believe 7” as well.
Lol to the part on standing properly. One really needs to do this
What are your thoughts on using a bamboo cutting board?
I’ve got one and it’s fine , bit harder than my normal wooden one though 👍🏻
This is the PGA Masters of Bread Slicing.
Thanks
Haha, I'm definitely slice number three. Plenty of wonky sandwiches in my house.
lol I'm a squasher! But not anymore!
Hi!! Can you make another bread slicing video that addressed how to slice the end part of the bread. You stopped short in this video.
He said get toe. Think you were trying to say "ghetto". 😂
Wow, I am gonna practice slicing bread, but first I need to bake a couple of loaves...
What you came for, slicing: 3:33
Thank you for keeping me from ruining my bread.
My pleasure Cathy 🤗
I'm looking for help cutting bread machine loaves with a hole in the bottom. My slices look beautiful until I get to the part of the loaf which is undermined by the hole.
Hi Jack, is it a must to slice the bread after it fully cooled down?
If you want to slice the bread while it is still warm, dip your knife into a kettle of boiling water, wipe it dry and cut. The hot blade goes through the bread better.
keep it up dude...
Will do 😎
I had exactly the same chopping board jack but it was ruined n split by wifey putting it in the dishwasher 🙄. She didn't know bout oiling and caring for for wooden boards so that's my job now. My slicing still sucks somewhat but it's OK i like doorsteps anyway.
Actually… that is a little bit wonky…. 🤣🤣🤣 you are my FAVORITE!
Ok ok. Your relaxation method worked. Well not as good as your slices. But I will practice. Tell me more about your victorinox. The maitre? What length?
This one ☺️👉🏻 www.victorinox.com/uk/en/Products/Cutlery/Bread-and-Baking-Knives/Grand-Maitre-Bread-Knife/p/7.7430.23G
Good man
Do you have a video to teach me to properly spread my butter? 😂😂😂😂 (I still suck at cutting my bread, even with your excellent instructions.)
Is the bread warm or cool down
I answered and said, "If I have found favor in thy sight, O Lord, show this also to thy servant: whether after death, as soon as every one of us yields up his soul, we shall be kept in rest until those times come when thou wilt renew the creation, or whether we shall be tormented at once?" 76 He answered me and said, "I will show you that also, but do not be associated with those who have shown scorn, nor number yourself among those who are tormented. 77 For you have a treasure of works laid up with the Most High; but it will not be shown to you until the last times.
78 Now, concerning death, the teaching is: When the decisive decree has gone forth from the Most High that a man shall die, as the spirit leaves the body to return again to him who gave it, first of all it adores the glory of the Most High. 79 And if it is one of those who have shown scorn and have not kept the way of the Most High, and who have despised his law, and who have hated those who fear the Most High -- 80 such spirits shall not enter into habitations, but shall immediately wander about in torments, ever grieving and sad, in seven ways.
81 The first way, because they have scorned the law of the Most High. 82 The second way, because they cannot now make a good repentance that they may live. 83 The third way, they shall see the reward laid up for those who have trusted the covenants of the Most High. 84 The fourth way, they shall consider the torment laid up for themselves in the last days. 85 The fifth way, they shall see how the habitations of the others are guarded by angels in profound quiet. 86 The sixth way, they shall see how some of them will pass over into torments. 87 The seventh way, which is worse than all the ways that have been mentioned, because they shall utterly waste away in confusion and be consumed with shame, and shall wither with fear at seeing the glory of the Most High before whom they sinned while they were alive, and before whom they are to be judged in the last times.
88 "Now this is the order of those who have kept the ways of the Most High, when they shall be separated from their mortal body. 89 During the time that they lived in it, they laboriously served the Most High, and withstood danger every hour, that they might keep the law of the Lawgiver perfectly. 90 Therefore this is the teaching concerning them: 91 First of all, they shall see with great joy the glory of him who receives them, for they shall have rest in seven orders.
92 The first order, because they have striven with great effort to overcome the evil thought which was formed with them, that it might not lead them astray from life into death. 93 The second order, because they see the perplexity in which the souls of the unrighteous wander, and the punishment that awaits them. 94 The third order, they see the witness which he who formed them bears concerning them, that while they were alive they kept the law which was given them in trust. 95 The fourth order, they understand the rest which they now enjoy, being gathered into their chambers and guarded by angels in profound quiet, and the glory which awaits them in the last days. 96 The fifth order, they rejoice that they have now escaped what is corruptible, and shall inherit what is to come; and besides they see the straits and toil from which they have been delivered, and the spacious liberty which they are to receive and enjoy in immortality. 97 The sixth order, when it is shown to them how their face is to shine like the sun, and how they are to be made like the light of the stars, being incorruptible from then on. 98 The seventh order, which is greater than all that have been mentioned, because they shall rejoice with boldness, and shall be confident without confusion, and shall be glad without fear, for they hasten to behold the face of him whom they served in life and from whom they are to receive their reward when glorified.
99 This is the order of the souls of the righteous, as henceforth is announced; and the aforesaid are the ways of torment which those who would not give heed shall suffer hereafter." 100 I answered and said, "Will time therefore be given to the souls, after they have been separated from the bodies, to see what you have described to me?" 101 He said to me, "They shall have freedom for seven days, so that during these seven days they may see the things of which you have been told, and afterwards they shall be gathered in their habitations."
102 I answered and said, "If I have found favor in thy sight, show further to me, thy servant, whether on the day of judgment the righteous will be able to intercede for the unrighteous or to entreat the Most High for them, 103 fathers for sons or sons for parents, brothers for brothers, relatives for their kinsmen, or friends for those who are most dear." 104 He answered me and said, "Since you have found favor in my sight, I will show you this also. The day of judgment is decisive and displays to all the seal of truth. Just as now a father does not send his son, or a son his father, or a master his servant, or a friend his dearest friend, to be ill or sleep or eat or be healed in his stead, 105 so no one shall ever pray for another on that day, neither shall any one lay a burden on another; for then every one shall bear his own righteousness and unrighteousness." 2 Esdras 2:31

This guy is adorable
Now I have to buy knive for 100$ to cut my bread from Tesco. Ty m8!
A good bread knife doesn't have to be the most expensive bread knife. See: czcams.com/video/GWewefvCZXM/video.html
Does it matter to cut the bread fresh and warm or is letting it fully cool down better?
Cool down eduardo! 👍🏻
@@Bakewithjackthanks for the reply!!
While the Victorinox is a nice knife, I don’t care that it’s much thinner near the tip than the handle. It’s easy for the blade to bend and flex during the cut. My last bread knife didn’t have this problem.
