No but it would be a long time until certain Catholic traditions and prayers would leave Lutheran liturgies. During Bach’s time the Lutheran church still celebrated the assumption of the virgin so Grieg probably did pray to her as well.
1898 is long after the Reformation. The Church of Norway has priests like in the Anglican and Catholic Churches. And Catholics venerate, not pray to Mary.

Possibley Lutheran and wrote music based on traditional Norwegian melodies.
He definately was a protestant, he is our national composer in Norway, hope this brings clarity to the question.
