I was lucky enough to play 2 frames of snooker with him when I was 14 back in 1996. I won a league in a snooker hall not far from when he lived in Mottram St-Andrews an the prize was a best of 3 against him. He thrashed me obviously but loved every minute of it getting to meet him and have a chat and laugh with one of my snooker idols.

Place him in the modern era and he would win snooker matches, especially on the modern tables today, he was that good, he plays snooker shots no professional would attempt today, yet he made a huge number in his early career, and beat players like Stephen hendry in his later career, not bad with all the baggage he carried around with him, The Hurricane the Motzart of snooker, RIP maestro!

That long red at 1.10 is one of the best shots you will ever see. Considering he played at least 5 shots just as great in the same frame. But it was also the pressure he was under to make those pots, if he missed he would have lost the match and the 1982 world title in the final against reardon.

My great uncle turned down the opportunity to turn pro in the 70’s just as it all took off, he played Higgins amongst others a good few times. He always taught me to stay still for about 5 seconds after the shot.... Higgins doesn’t even wait til the cue ball is struck before moving his head up!

Alex was the punk rocker of snooker, he took the rule book and wrote his own one. Every player today owes him a debt they can never repay.

the fact that he gets up immidiatly after striking the ball stresses me out for some reason. I feel like there's no way you could pot anything with such a technique that's super weird to watch

Everyone has their own way of playing. One guy plays at my local club, when he feathers, he does it so fast as if he’s got a medical problem and has almost no pause before he hits the cue ball. But he is a very accurate potter.

Snooker wouldn't be where it is today without Alex, he lived and breathed the game, but the people at top who ran it didn't like the fact that he was bigger than the game, yes he had his demons, don't we all, but when he needed help, those at the top turned their backs, true genius, RIP
