Realistic HO Scale Operating Session on my Friend's BN Layout.

- This is a video I made of where I spend most of my Saturday evenings. My friend Randy, has a huge layout that takes up most of his basement. It is a free-lanced BN and KCS layout. Santa Fe, Conrail and Amtrak also have trackage rights on the layout. He has a fully functional diamond and interlocking junction on the layout. The whole layout operates just like a real railroad. In the video, I show you what goes on during an operating night. They usually go on for about 3-4 hours depending on how late some people stay and there are lots of trains that need to be ran in order for the layout to function. He hasn't started scenery on the layout yet and that probably won't start until the CTC signalling system is completely installed. The whole layout is DCC. I have lots of fun running trains here. I have dispatched the layout a few times and I have been a yard master at Stagger Yard and Cedar Yard a few times but I haven't tried out Brock yet. I think I'll try it out next time I'm there. I think this is my longest video that I have ever posted on CZcams. If you have any questions about the layout please feel free to ask in the comments section. Enjoy the trains!
Update January 2015 Currently the owner of this layout is in the process of dismantling the layout in the video and he will be building a new one that will be modelled after the C&O and Conrail operations in the Detroit, Windsor/Essex, Chatham and St. Thomas areas in the 1980s. Updates to follow. Thanks for 80 000 views by the way! The owner and I never thought it would get this many views and likes.

No problem thanks for this awesome video
Love those Custom Ditch lights on the Conrail GP-40 or GP-38,looks great
Very nice layout--- looks like a fun way to spend a Saturday evening.
Thanks! Yeah we have a great time.
Super great job. .wow a lot of trains running..thanks for sharing. ..
Thanks!
Beautiful-wonderful work.
Dispatching and drinking a beer like a boss! lol Thanks for sharing this awesome display!
Lol no problem! Thanks for watching! I'm only allowed to drink water when I dispatch lol.
lol :)
I really enjoyed watching, thanks for posting.
I'm glad to hear that! Thank-you for watching!
This is just the inspiration I needed to get cracking on my layout.
+Dave Mc Lol glad I could help!
Check out the time-lapse video of Brock Yard (the large yard in this video) I just uploaded! The link is in the description of this video.
Good job guys! keep having fun!
Thank-you!
Incredible pike, great operation at scale speeds. Nice...
Thanks!
Another great layout in progress. Please keep the video's coming in on your progress. looks great !!!!
JOE R. Thanks! The owner actually dismantled this layout over the winter and is currently getting the bench work set-up for a new layout that will be based on operations in the city and surrounding towns that we live in/near by (the Windsor/Essex, Chatham Kent and Detroit) in the 70s and 80s on the C&O and Conrail.
Superb fun. One of the best op's videos I've seen............thanks.......David(UK)
Thank-you David!
That is one sweet layout! It's gonna look even better with scenery!
Thanks for the comment! I'll pass it on to the owner! Yeah I can't wait!
First class basement layout all the way, Great structures & operation of trains.
Cheers from Michigan.
Yeah it's awesome. Thanks!
Wait til it's sceniced.
Best part? Conrail 350 at 8:16 into the video with a gondola car full of beer caps. Well done gentlemen, well done.
Lol thank-you! They're old scrap Bud Light signs :P
My friend and I had an agreement that one day if we do make a model train layout he would own the layout and I would own the trains this just reminded me of that
Wish to add: After watching 35 Min. I see trains crawling as they should and proto Ops. I really like the Brookfield Jct. diamond and its serious role of dealing with two different lines converging here, along with the bypass. The tower has a dead serious responsibility here.
Nice RUSH hat. Also, nice video on ops. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks! Thanks for watching!
Oh thanks! It's not his, it's mine lol
Awesome layout and video! Especially loved the part about someone driving their tractor up the side of the road to Tecumseh. Haha that was priceless.
Thank-you! Yeah some of the conversations we have there are pretty funny.
***** well, what good would a model railroad op session be without some weird conversations? Lol definitely looking forward to some more videos. What's a guy like me have to do to get in on an op session whenever I'm in Windsor?
I guess it wouldn't be very good then lol. Yeah I think I'll bring my gear there next time I go to one. I'm not sure. I'm not the owner of the layout so I really have no idea. I could ask the owner and I could get back to you.
So much cooler with ballast and scenery. You guys should spend your Saturdays making it look real, it make a huge difference.
The owner is doing the signal systems first before scenery. Also, he keeps adding new sidings to the layout and adding onto other spots and making them bigger. For example Brock Yard is now a 9 track yard with a mainline (in the video it's a 7 track yard with a main), the double track mainline that use to run behind/under the yard now runs in front of it, McKay tower (where the local with the 2 CP's pulled up to) is now further down the line and has a new industry there and there's a lot he has done since this was filmed (I'm probably going to make an update video of it) so scenery will be the last thing that happens. The owner is retired so he does spend a lot of time down here during the week doing stuff so hopefully scenery will start in the next year or two. Thanks for watching!
Nice lighting. :$
fab. looking forward to the next layout update
James chick Thank-you! I took some shots of what his basement looked like about 2 months ago as he's actually building a new layout right now. I have to find some time to edit it together and post it on here.
Yeah that's it finding the time to do more on a new layout,
James chick Lol yeah he tore this one down about a year after I filmed this video. I haven't been over there for a while but last time I was there he was still trying to get sections of the new bench work to fit in a spot in the basement.
love it when they going to compelt it k
THE TRAINS ARE JUST NOT LONG ENOUGH! KOOL LAYOUT THOUGH
The reason why we don't run super long trains is because the yards can't handle them. Thanks!
it's nice to see that you run the cabooses with your trains, I feel it's just wrong when others don't do it
Steven Bruni Lol yeah I see where you're coming from.
I plan on having cabooses with all my trains when I get my layout built.
Steven Bruni When I build my own it will be modern so I'm going to use end of train devices.
Dear Model Train Enthusiast, The information in this downloadable step-by-step system is an absolute “must have” for beginners and will also benefit any intermediate railroader… dld.bz/stepbystepsystem
I FULLY AGREE, EVERY TRAIN NEEDS A CABOOSE. IT'S IMPOSSIBLE TO GET A CABOOSE CREW INSIDE ONE OF THOSE END OF TRAIN DEVICES
I like the name of that yard...
nice OP and Layout
Thanks!
NICE
cool thanks for this video
No problem! Thanks for watching!
Nice job documenting the operating session. If you could get a we bit of cooperation from some of the operating crew it would be much better. Thanks for a real nice video Mike I subscribed to your channel as this is one of the better jobs filming I have seen.
Thank-you so much for the kind words and for subscribing! I'm glad you enjoyed! Yeah there's a person who sort of likes doing things his way but I don't let him bother me too much.
Ya know, I had the time today to sit down & actually enjoy the entire video op session & I like' you guy's setup, really. I like the fact you use a caboose on just about every consist (correct term?) & the fact that you guys use all manual ground throws which I absolutely love as well. I like when you run the more modern setup where there's no caboose on the end however, I didn't notice the use of any FRED's on the end of the consist? Isn't that a "no-no" in the biz?
May I ask if you don't mind? I see a great deal of running your trains on just the plywood & was wondering if that's permanent or just so you can run some trains for fun & plan to use the cork later down the road? I plan to use straight plywood with the thin 1/4" sheets of pink foam (insulation) without the use of cork at all my layout & several guys told me they didn't recommend that? I know, it's our layout to do what we want & just have fun however, is there a reason for what they're recommending or is it simply a personal preference thing? Thanks in advance and again, I love you guy's setup & op sessions! I'm a subscriber as well. You guys do a fine, fine job!
Thank-you so much! Most of the mainline switches are controlled by the dispatcher but switches in the yards or for spurs are hand thrown. We try to use cabooses most of the time because the layout is based in caboose times (1970s-1980s BN and KCS). If someone isn't using a caboose the owner doesn't really care but he says they should be using one. As for FRED's we don't use them on cars that are meant for operating with (some people bring cars with FRED's on them and just use it as a caboose) because the yard crews can't really switch very well with them.
As for the plywood and cork stuff I'm not sure if the owner will put roadbed under the yards. I don't think he will because Brock Yard has had some major upgrades done to it (in the video it's a 7 track yard with a mainline. Now it's a 9 or 10 track yard with a mainline) and he didn't put any roadbed under it even though most of he yard was ripped up anyways.
They might be saying that because ballast might stick better to cork than insulation but I don't really know. At the train club I go to we use cork and on my home layout I have that black foam stuff and both work fine. I don't see why insulating foam wouldn't work. It could also be smoother to run trains on the cork than insulation.
Oh no problem! Thank-you for taking an hour and 10 minutes out of your life to watch the video lol! I'll pass the nice comments onto the layout owner. Thanks for subscribing too!
Me too, I am adding Marker LED's to Proto 1000 RDC's using red and white LED's with .75mm fiber optic wire. However the locomotives get the Yeloglo LED's headlights which look realistic. I have done at least 149 DCC/Sound conversions. Try and make them as prototypical as possible. Passengers, Engineers, conductors, firemen, interior LED lighting..... Great hobby. Ted
+choochoo3985 Oh cool. I always think if the person is having fun making the stuff then that's alright with me.
so cool.
Shipmate Lol thanks!
I have a couple of questions about the Brookfield diamond. What size are the switches on one side of the diamond and what is the degree angle of the diamond and what track is used on the layout. Thanks
And? Is it the new one working, some video? If so please the link: Thank you
Great video, nice layout.
What is the thickness of the plywood, 3/4" of an inch?
Thanks! I have no idea to be honest. I'm guessing it's a standard thickness so if 3/4 of an inch is standard than I guess it's that but I don't know.
Sounds to me like you almost got throne out!
Grand layout; great operations except I've never heard a prototype railroad use the 10 code on their radios. But there may be one out there somewhere that does. Just sayin'....
It's funny how the CR 1645 has flashing lights up in the class light spot. Something CR never did.
Yeah he likes to play with LED's. Doesn't really care about being prototypical lol.
I'm the one running the BN/CP local.
Those are some seriously high ditch lights on that one Conrail unit, lol. Do you guys run ALL cork or rubber roadbed under your tracks? On some of my plywood sections especially in my rail-yards where I have a ton of ground throws, I don't run any roadbed at all, just ballast. Is that cool or what? Thanks. Nice layout guys.
Yeah he couldn't get the wires to reach the proper spot so he just decided to have some fun with it lol. The layout is pretty much all cork I believe. The owner of this layout did that too.
dispatcher is drinking on the job...hope there was no wrecks... :)
Lol even when we're sober someone messes up.
That's a lot of work to put a layout together and then take it apart and start all over again. I really like that classification yard. That is neat. Where did you get that BN caboose at as I would like to get one? No layout yet just a show case.
+Robert Bowman Yeah he said this was more of a layout he threw together just to run on until he figured out what he really wanted to with the space. He had a layout before this at his old house (before I met him) so when he moved he built this just to get a layout going. Now he knows what he really wants to do and is building a new one. I haven't been there for a few months so I have no idea what his progress is on the new layout right now. Yeah Brock Yard and Stagger Yard were monsters and fun to operate. I have no idea where he got most of his stuff. I think a lot of is from old Blue Box kits.
what was that conrail unit at 8:00 in the shot ,, I want one so cool ,, do you have info on it
+sparky107107 It is a GP15. Athearn Genesis did a run of them a few years ago. If you go on their website and look up the GP15 you might still be able to order what ever they have left over from the original run. My guess is though most have been bought up. The light job is custom by the owner so the lights don't come like that on the stock model.
The blue LED's are not at all realistic, but were all we could find at one time. The most realistic lights I use are the Minitronics Yeloglo in 3mm and 5mm. Cost about $2 each, but worth it. I have also found clear brite White as well, much cheaper.
+choochoo3985 That was a little experimental engine the owner did. He's an electrician and likes to do little fun projects like that with LEDs. He mainly models 1950s CP so he keeps his older CP power prototypical while everything else he has fun with. He's got a lot of cool little things with LEDs and has even added white LEDs to a few of my units too.
check All Electronics.com page 4 - full of LED's and neet stuff.
Who is that wearing his RUSH hate and Family Guy T shirt? LOL nice CP local Mike Looks like low ridership on the Amtrak train number 60. Great video.
Hummm Danny take a wild guess? lol, It i a very nice CP local. Both GP38-2's are mine and the other GP 40 is Mikes.
*****
I am only joking buddy, I know you love Rush probably just as much as the Blackhawks?
I know lol. Yep just as much as the blackawks and the diamondbacks.
The local is suppose to have a BN GP9 and a BN GP38-2 but Mitch insists on bringing engines that aren't prototypical to the layout. Yeah Amtrak 60 wasn't very full and running 2 hours late lol.
***** Mike shut up. Yes they are, BN could have leased those from CP. I don't like running those engines because they have momentum and it's very hard to switch with that.
When will that be?
Question: I'm not trying to sound rude if I do but on Local 222 what is the need for 3 Engines, train doesn't look like it needs the extra power so I thought I would ask?
It normally ran with two GP9s but whoever was running it that night decided to run it with 2 GP38s and a GP40 they brought (the GP40 leader was my unit from home).
@@CPWindsorsub cool and thanks for anwsering me back
BN dispatch, we just crapped our pants. Over.
Yea dude
Suh bra
at 8:04 i can't help but wonder if that is a gp15-1 or an sd45t-2
It's a GP15. It has 4 axles so it's a Geep. Thanks for watching!
***** YOU ARE SOOOOOOO WELCOME
Looking real good. Please enhance it with slower yard limit speeds/enormous tonnage inertia, more time to couple up safely/connect hoses/open hand brakes, check air, and reversing without breaking knuckles/ take slack gently. More momentum depth on long trains and slow down the switcher and its shunting, there are boots on the ground and tower is watching you. Safety is Job 1 ! .. and there's the paycheck consideration ! .......Mark
Thank-you for the feedback! I'll pass it along to the owner of the layout! Yeah Brookfield Jct. is the busiest spot on the layout. It can be tricky getting trains through there if it's busy. BN has priority though so if there's a lot of BN traffic and a KCS train is waiting the KCS crew will be waiting for a while.
Great layout! And very good video work. Any chance of a track plan being shown?
Thank-you! You mean like a layout tour?
***** Could be a layout video tour. What I was thinking of is a diagram/drawing of the track plan; i.e., where the tracks go in the room showing the positions of the yards, the junction, etc.
JohntheTrainman He Changes them frequently.
Yeah maybe I could. He has little maps of the layout posted around the layout.
***** He might even have a diagram of the whole layout that he used in its construction.
what is the stuff called that the tracks are sitting on?
It is cork roadbed.
Oh my, 10 codes on the radio?!?
It's only one channel. Channel 10.
Do you think the switching loco is moving a little to fast? Thanks
Which one?
***** The UP one. Seemed to dash back and forth like a shuttlecock.....lol.....David(UK)
MrChoochoo50 Lol that's just how he operates his yard. He does things quickly so that he can get trains in and out faster.
That's funny, maybe you should him a copy of Lance Mindheim!! LOL!!!
Jose Pallares Lol
Any updates on his new conrail layout?
Yeah I was over there about a month ago and he said he was hoping to be up and running by now. I haven't talked to him since so I don't know if he met his deadline or not. When I was there he still had to finish Chatham and Essex.
awesome!! I cant wait to see his new layout!!
that should read peco turnouts lol
where did you get the Canadian pacific locos
The lead locomotive with sound was purchased at Action Hobbies Kingsville and the other two I'm not sure where the owner bought them.
Thanks!
No problem!
Hey Jack! CPWindsorsub is the owner of the first locomotive (GP40) with sound and I'm the owner of the 2 GP38-2's. The GP38 that just says "CP Rail" on it was purchased at Action Hobbies as well, the GP38 that says "Canadian Pacific" with the beaver logo and #7309 was purchased at Broughdale Hobby in London Ontario.
like it when will finish it RANDY. k
He's actually in the process of building a new layout. This current one has been dismantled and he his building a new layout based on the C&O between Windsor and St. Thomas. He is also doing Conrail from Detroit to St. Thomas.
i see a lot of pevo turnouts code 100?
Greg Palmer I believe he uses code 100.
can any body help me to create this rail road layout where they get these thing like rail engine and wagon etccc plz tell me and help to create plz
rakesh shah You can find a lot of these things in your local hobby shop. As for the wood and electronics you can find the wood and basic electronics at hardware stores like Home Depot, Lowe's, Home Hardware etc. Everything else (signals, trains, track, buildings, DCC electronics) you can order from a hobby store or buy them from the dealer on their websites like Walthers for the buildings and Athearn, Atlas, Broadway Limited, Walthers etc for the cars and locomotives.
Plz give my order
store.actionhobbieskingsville.com/ You can order pretty much everything from these guys.
How much prizes
rakesh shah They should be listed on the website.
nice layout nice video. but I can't help but say the lights on the Conrail were so not legit at all lol classlights were not used as ditch lights.
Thanks! Yeah the owner did it for fun. He's an electrician and does projects with LEDs.
first time I've ever seen that done like that lol.
Lol. He has done a lot of projects like that. He has a Sperry car that he did and a Sperry box truck as well that he added sound to. All of his engines have LEDs for the headlights and he's put LokSound in most of them.
now the sperry projects I'd LOVE to see.
Southern Railfan Productions They're in one of my videos of the Essex Train Show.
you guys need some "Deoxit" for your trains and track
What's that?
Electricity cleaner and protector. I have a short video on it. Check it out, I know your guys will love it.
Bobbi Matson Is it the red boxcar with the bright boy under it?
***** Sorry about that.
The video name is "Deoxit, Safe on Plastics, Metals and Scale Trains of all Kinds".
At the end of the video. I have this cross that always needs just a dab or two on the crossing. It works great for months.
Oh okay. I'll check it out.
All realism went out the door in the first 15 minutes. Why does just about everybody insist on moving a car they're about to couple on to? I never move a car when I coupler on to it.Is there a prize for speed in switching?
Why do you move the switcher so fast? Not protypical at all.
There were 3 trains waiting to depart and another waiting to enter that was blocking the main.
Then do like the prototype. Hold the switch move until the other trains cleared. I forgotten the number of times we had to wait on other trains before we could do our work- the reason was simple operation and safety rules for switching and having no priority. The DS would rather hold a switch move then fright trains.Remember that and you will have more realistic operations..
brakie44820 It was a dead end yard so more trains coming in would clog it up even more.
Even at that the dispatcher would have held the switch moves until he cleared the other trains. He would never have stop a train on the main. He would have held it at the nearest passing siding and ran his two outbounds then brought the inbound in. The yard crew would be standing in the clear on one of the yard tracks or switch lead.Besides working as a brakeman I have dispatched on three different HO model railroad clubs and like a real dispatcher I would have done exactly what I stated based on my railroad experience..Whenever one dispatches on a model railroad he/she needs to stay ahead of the game and apparently your dispatcher worked his self into a corner simply by not staying two or three moves ahead by thinking his moves out before hand..
kid with the hat funny
13:21 is not Stagger, that Cedar. :$
Oh whoops lol. I watched this whole thing before processing it and I still missed that.
***** Ok
How did you get 107000 views on this
Mattew Molnar Apparently people really like to watch operating sessions.
is there any way i can get that sofeware for my computer i would like to help and become a bn yard master
I think you have to buy the software for it but I'm not 100% sure. Do you live in the Windsor area?
i am in Texas but if you had a lay out in texas or a train group i be happy to help
Oh okay. No we don't unfortunately. This is my friends private home layout. But thanks anyways!
Cuality. Prety
I don't see anything that looks real but i love the trains
This was looking excellent as far as 4:13 with the yellow switcher and then it went all to pot. What happened there? It suddenly turned from model operation to toy train operation. The realism went straight out the window. Consequently I have not watched anymore.
Richard Archer It's just how he switched the yard. You almost have to do it that fast on this layout or else sessions would have ran for 6 hours instead of 4 lol.
***** I see my reply has magically disappeared. Remember ... on the real railroads, switchers have to deal with momentum just like everything else ... and stock has weight, which can stop or suddenly slow down and switcher in its tracks on buffering up. That's the real world. (Sorry, couldn't resist).
Richard Archer I guess someone else must have deleted it then. A few people on here have been doing that to me. I understand where you're coming from when it comes to realistic speeds to switch yards but on that particular night there were a lot of trains running so to keep up he had to move quickly. The problem on the old layout is there's not a lot of room to hold trains before the yards so if you get 2 or 3 arriving at the same time (like that night) the dispatcher would have to hold them miles and miles (to scale of course) away just for a yard opening.
***** Oh I know about the pressures of operations, I just make 'em wait :) Either that or I don't operate at all. You see, I am one of those strange beasts who considers correct movement a fundamental quality of model operations. Without it I find all other prototypical qualities of operations loose their integrity.
In fact I think controllers should not have the ability to produce unprototypical behavior and I am actually in the process of making such DC (analogue) controllers. There will be no "Help, get me out of trouble" button. The only emergency stop available will be a realistic emergency stop. The only acceleration available will be of a realistic rate. I believe such controllers would change model railway operations dramatically, and for the better. I do not believe there would be more damage to stock, I actually believe there would be less.
So watch out, there's a revolution is on its way :)
Richard Archer Lol I like that idea. There would probably be some spectacular accidents too though lol.
Oh you also spelled Sterling wrong.
Ok.
You didn't have permission rom me to film me?
I said to everyone before I started filming, "I am going to be filming the operating tonight. If you don't want to be on camera come forward now or forever hold your peace" or something like that and you didn't say anything. You even told me to film you in the mirror.
I'm joking Mr anal. Gosh
Lol ok.
………..I think train sets like these are incredible and very ingenious they way they operate...………. but I draw the line when these guys start dressing like engineers and using walkie talkies to quote requisition forms for the loads on the various trains, much less talking like they're real trains and carrying on real time business. A little too far over the edge I would think. But have fun anyway. :)
hey the dispacher is drinking on the job he should be fired
background chatter really anoyingly distracting!
There's not much you can do about that during a live ops session. People have to communicate with each other. It's like a real railroad plus we're all friends so we're there to have a good time and converse.
SMH
It is kind of a Oh Kay video. but to much talking in the back ground that has nothing to do with the video.
I agree! Way too much yapping.
