Will be heading out to work on the new system after I answer a few more comments. I hope to have a clip up on the build in a week or so time all going well Jonathan.

G'day mate. So glad to see that you are not giving up on your gardening adventures - just renovating things. I've enjoyed your channel for a number of years now. Thank you for the terrific content. You channel is a shining example of why I love CZcams. It enriches my life. Keep up the good work.
Hi FLgardener & thanks for the kind words. đ

Everything in life could be much more free than it is, the idea that nothing in life is free is a horrid mindset. We have to get rid of this mindset to improve.

Thanks for the updates Rob! Your channel was my initial inspiration from years ago! I've redone my basement aquaponics system several times towards the elusive goal of getting the system dialed in... Started with a chop and flip rain barrel which is great for an outdoor spring/summertime project here in Virginia - the fish had to be moved indoors for the winter so they wouldn't be in a solid barrel of ice!. Used them in the basement with grow lights but the solids load from a pump in the tank directly up to the grow bed can't be ignored. Finally got a 100 gallon sump with 50 gallon grow bed and 50 vertical grow towers and everything is humming along after adding the moving media bed, swirl filters and protein skimmer. I learned from aquarium keeping that everything you do from a filtration stand point only buys time for the water changes and media flushing to remove the solids and excess salts. I look forward to your system rebuilds in the future. Good luck on the renovations!
Nice one Shaun. đ
Will be posting an update on the new jobbie soon.
Happy growing. đ±đ

@@RobsAquaponics very... thanks!
I'm really interested in the sand bed idea.
The easy availability of sand around here appeals to me for a start.
Googling it gives other claimed advantages too.
Seems like Gary Donaldson is an advocate, and he is very experienced in the area.
So far no one has done straight iAVs with Aussie fish but they do work well with Tilapia George.đ
Murray Hallam is using Jade perch in a sandponics system but it's not a proper iAVS as described by Mark & Gary. I would like to know what he's doing different but can't afford his course to find out more on just one growing method. đ
I'f you're on FaceBook look up the iAVs page & group. A few posts there may give you more insight to working systems if you're interested. đ
Cheers & have a top one George.
Sand is terrible. Its anearobic
@@DatsiKxModz That would depend on how it's used. Folks have been growing in the sand based iAVs systems for years with no issues at all. đđđ
The one thing I can rely on with this site is honesty. This means that I can learn so much more from Rob's videos because--whatever happens--Rob always tells you STRAIGHT: This is what happened, and this is why. When he makes mistakes he admits it and lets me in to his thinking about how to do things better--so l can learn, not so much what to do, but how to apply his knowledge to my own situation. Through success or failure we get to see Rob's diehard problem solving being applied in a context that includes the constraints of time, money, and family commitments: The real world factors we all have to deal with--messily, in the moment--and which, for most of us, are just as influential in determining the choices we make as the logic of a technically optimal "system design". You are a bloody inspiration mate.
Thanks for the kind words Rob. đ The current build has been slowed down a bit due to the weather so it will be next week before any clip of substance gets posted on it.
Cheers & have a top one Rob.
Hey brother. Much love from Fraser Coast! Thanks to your vids myself and my boys are undergoing a simple aquaponics system over the Easter hols! Cheers for that Jarra.

I am very sorry and sad to hear about your decision.
I have been gardening for a few years, discovering your channel inspired me to start building my own aquaponics system. I am planning to build a 20 000 liter fish tank, can you suggest how big (how many liters) my grow beds and deep water culture beds should be? One grow bed holds 540 liters. How big should the bio filter and solid waste separator be?
Thank you for all the relevant information you have posted on your you tube channel, everything you present makes it easy to understand especially for a novice like myself. Therefore making it possible for me to build something amazing which otherwise I would never have attempted to build
Thank you
Martin from South Africa
Sounds like you're going commercial Martin. All the sizing for your system's components will be based around the amount of feed you'll be adding into the system when the fish are at their largest size. The reason being is that the media beds & biofilter will need to be able to process the amount of ammonia produced at that time. From there you can work backwards with the amount of mÂČ of growing space & plant numbers to take up the nitrate that's produced at that time.
For solids removal, most of the settlers will require 20min retention time in commercial-sized systems to keep the fines out from the DWC beds. You may also want to consider an additional fines filter before these beds just to make sure.
Hope that info helps some.
Am still doing aquaponics & just showed the layout for our small temporary system in today's clip if you're interested in checking it out, czcams.com/video/VbXKSP8jt9k/video.html

Thanks for the video. A year ago we purchased a ranch in southern california with around 200 fruit trees. I have been thinking about how we might become quite self sufficient with little effort. I would really like to have fish for food and chickens for eggs. I'm not sure if hydroponics is too much work. My goal is to make life as easy as possible. All the fruit trees are set up on auto irrigation, so I am looking to take advantage of the space between the trees to grow other food. My focus is on "the super foods" like spinach, swiss chard, broccoli, onion. I also want to try to grow rice and papyrus. We have a seasonal stream and pond down in the valley, but last year it dried out around mid summer. Maybe I can build something to channel water from the creek that I can put on the sprinkler system when the creek and pond dry up.
you are my number 1 model for hydroponics thank you so much for your generosity

I've only recently became interested in aquaponics, but do have a small back yard that I believe will house a wonderful aquaponics setup, well it's my plan to begin anyway, largely due to your videos I believe I can do it... thank you!
Nice one Steven. Have you started the build yet?

Have a top one.
Good Stuff Rob
Thanks Mr Greg. đđ
Thanks Rob! That fish trap works like a charm... Used one made out of a 2 liter soft drink bottle a few times to catch Tilapia.
I wouldn't mind taking a few down the river to see what I can catch. Just need to make sure that I won't be breaking any laws first. ;)
Cheers. đ
It's hard to see you finish your system. I saw some your videos not all, learned from it, felt that you do and say the right things, liked your explain, very thank you, wish you to do what want and what you like, don't say to you good bye but say see again. mohamed from EGYPT

Donât worry about what a few people think. You have been a great source of information over the years of watching your videos. Youâre a great teacher and a great communicator so please just hang in there. Great luck to you buddy!
Cheers Steve. This video is from a few years back & I've had another system running for a few years now.
czcams.com/play/PLBcWprMIwYYhxrXIEidBYPP4Nk0uxtK8w.html
Thay playlist should have most of the videos from this current build.
I figured youâd be back. Once a teacher always a teacher. I look forward to watching and learning much more from you.
Honestly i don't have money to join your petrion. But for me to support your channel i never skip every single ads cuz its my way of supporting your channel and you deserve it for the tons of information and advices you share.. please teach us more...
Thanks Jorim & please don't feel you even need to watch the ads. Am just glad that you're finding the clips interesting & hope they give you an idea or two you can use.
Cheers & all the best.
So glad you're đčđŹđ·đłđšđȘđ°đ”đź the old system with a new one. You're the only aquaponics guy I pay attention to, and I'm not even doing aquaponics. It would have been a real tragedy if what the clip title suggested was actually what you intended. I'm breathing again.
I will be poping out to work on it in a littlew while hopefully. Just need to reply to a few more comments. đđ
Sorry for the scare Chuck. Won't be doing any more nasty click bait titles,
for a while. đ
Cheers mate & all the best.
Good luck, Rob! I know it must have been a tough decision, but will work out for the best in the long run.
Will have an update clip on the new system in a few weeks.
Cheers mate.
Thanks for the clip Rob! Sometime to improve upon a system you have to completely tear down the old one and start over. I've done it once with an AP system but the concept applies to any kind of system. Don't worry about the content of the clips to much, many of us just love watching the journey. It's real and reality isn't always perfect, we just love that you share it with us. Cheers, until the next one...
Am glad you're still enjoying the clips after all this time Subedei. đđ
I'm thinking I'll be posting a very soggy walk around clip this week if the rain doesn't let up. Not that I'm complaining about the rain, we definitely need as much as we can get at the moment. đ
Cheers & all the best.
This is one of the first videos that come up when you click #aquaponics. It is a bit discouraging and I see now that this was temporary and that you have set up a new system. This is already 18 months old so a lot has happened it seems. BUT maybe you should change the title? Like "A temporaray reorg" or "Getting ready for my new setup"... You are such an inspiring guy! You inspire confidence and there is obviously a good reason why you have so many followers. Great quality videos and so down to earth!
I watched this video just after watching a video from a guy in the northern US who tried to raise Tilapia despite knowing it is a tropical fish and then wondered why it didn't work out. So I almost lost faith... So I will now continue watching ALL your videos after January 2020.
Thanks for the suggestion Paul. I will have a think about what I should call it today.
Cheers mate.
I can't afford to pay you , but I really appreciate all you share, for those of us whove not got much, I sincerely appreciate you
& I appreciate that you stop by every clip for a chat Lisa. đđđ Knowing that folks are getting something from the clips that will help them out is what makes me want to keep filming.
All the best to you & yours. đđ
Thank you for the update! Can't wait to see what you do next!
Should have a clip on the new build posted in a few weeks time. đ
Cheers Rose.
Sir, I like your attitude and your videos.
Thanks Sean. Hope they help you out with some useful ideas as well.
Cheers & happy growing. đ±
Thanks for all you useful info, it has been extremely helpful đ hope you get it going again soon cheers
