I am a third generation contractor. I know how and why this building fell. It is the builders fault. He didn't put X bracing in. that would have prevented the building from falling.

Cant see any vertical bracing between portal frames.. temporary condition.. windy day. Something was wrong with construction sequence.

I didn't see any X bracing on this structure. WTF is with that ?

This wouldn't of happened if x-bracing was installed

It is sad that a worker died in the original collapse, but so much more tragic that a second worker died later.
I wonder if they will name it after both of them.

That structure looks like it didn't have much cross bracing, no wonder why it fell over like dominoes. I suppose it might have been stronger once the building was to be completed, similar to how plywood helps improve structural integrity of a wood framed house.

You have raised a good point, but in metal buildings like this on, the strength to resist wind load comes primarily from rod bracing in the plane of the roof and walls. Also the rigid frame resists lateral load, but to achieve the required strength, it must be properly brace with small members which connect the inside flanges of the beams and columns to the secondary members.
Suprisingly, the bare frames often generate more wind load than the buliding with the cladding on. I have designed buildings like this for forty years.

If this was really a high school the contractor had to pay union wages . Once this is looked into the will find corruption and democrats involved . Hell the contractor may not even been insured and bonded . When you have to pay union scale and still don't want the best but are willing to steal from those making you your money . It has to be a democrat .
