So you can't be dismissive by saying, "It's only a joke." It's not the purpose of HIS jokes. So it was surprising for him to make two "jokes" at O'Rourke's expense that were utterly false on the face of it - and would possibly mislead millions of people who don't know O'Rourke at all.

      Personally, I don’t take the Late Show’s opinions (if you can call them that since they’re just jokes playing off the synthesis of the social psyche) seriously. At the moment, there is barely any support for Tulsi compared to the front runners. A joke digging into that perspective is perfectly reasonable and amusing, even if it may turn out untrue. The show’s bias is only reflective of the opinion of the crowd, and most people don’t see Tulsi as a viable candidate at the moment. It’s not practical and certainly not humorous to view every candidate as a potential winner. 2016 wasn’t normal and should never be treated as such. Just because a crazy underdog made it through the slip gates doesn’t mean it will happen next time. There is a perspective that the late shows should be accountable for shaping public opinion, and so should not favor any candidates, but the problem isn’t with the shows, but the people who view them as legitimate news sources.

    • @patricioansaldi8021
      @patricioansaldi8021 Před 4 lety

      @@CharlieQuartz they're not responsible but de facto they do shape opinion and it is unbecoming to deride people's campaigns despite the facts (ie that 40% of viewers thought gabbard was the strongest in the debate). If they talked positively of gabbard and set her up better, then the same audience would have a positive response to her, but they don't do it cause they are playing political games, which is the problem with the dnc and American voting in general.
      Trump shows us that an underdog CAN win, and that should give us hope for a brighter future where we have candidates with higher potentials, candidates that actually represent the values of their constituents and the nation at large. I expect the president to do the right thing, not the political thing, and gabbard is a step in the right direction so we should be taking her and others more seriously otherwise we will end up with another political puppet like every other potus.
      This just shows how the media machine is working together to manipulate opinion and shape our politics, and it is unsightly to say the least.

      Patricio Ansaldi I agree that the Late Show failed in underestimating the excitement people had about Tulsi after the debate (which I sympathize with), and that celebrating her success on this stage could have made for an entertaining part of the monologue.
      I must disagree, though, that the media institutions are working together to alter public perception. I suspect it’s merely the effect of hundreds of writers expressing their own biases and those of the crowd to appeal to their audience. Shows will talk about the candidates that they think most people will like hearing about (whether positively or negatively). It’s like how the MSM talks about Trump. There probably isn’t some conspiracy set up by all the news organizations to talk about him only negatively and shape public opinion, but showing a negative perspective is what each of them thinks their audience wants to see. It’s also easy.

      I thought Gabbard and Warren were the only good candidates at this debate. I don’t really like Booker’s approach and I don’t know of any positive plans he has that differentiate him from the other candidates. Castro was the mayor of my city for a few years. His twin brother, Joaquin (a US Congressman) is much more intelligent and eloquent than he is. I wouldn’t trust Julian to run a PTA, let alone the country.
      I also don’t really care about “the new generation” (I’m in my twenties). An ideal President for all times, I feel, should be in their fifties or sixties. Any younger, they are too naive/hot-headed/inexperienced/immature and much too driven by ill-conceived notions like ideology or the Good. Any older, and they risk being disconnected from the changes in our society and falling to the illnesses of old age.
      Tulsi and Elizabeth seemed like the most reasonable, committed people in this debate, though I find it hard to forgive Tulsi for her past anti-LGBTQ, but she has the most impressive foreign policy history of any candidate besides Biden, and that is absolutely necessary for the US right now.

    I don’t want Trump to hear simply, “adios”. I want him to hear, “You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can be used against you in a court of law...”

    • @danp1471
      @danp1471 Před 4 lety +2

      I don't really disagree, but I would gladly settle for saying adios to Trump in 2020. I know many will say theres no way Trump will win again, but thats what they said last time. The media would have convinced me to bet my life savings that Trump would not win that election. I would have even doubled down saying he wouldnt last the 4 years in office.
      Thankfully I didnt find someone to take that bet because I'd probably be eating my gun a year from now.
      I'm done buying into any fairytales the leftist media suggest. Trump does/says something stupid. The media bitch about it for a couple days. Trump simply denies whatever it is & proceeds to do something even dumber or crazier so we move on to that. Its a never ending cycle. That man can get away with doing and saying anything. Its quite amazing really, just not in a good way.

    Kudos to the Univision moderator for asking a question in Spanish. To be fair, it was the candidates who opened that door. Don't speak the language if you can't take the question.

      @RavenPoe no one is making fun of them for speaking a second language. They are making fun of them for being condescending to Spanish speakers and blatantly pandering. Have conversations in Spanish if you want, go meet with people, talk to them, speak Spanish at your rallies if you want. But squeezing it into the debate was just absurd. I speak conversational Spanish and a bit of Korean. I use those languages when it's appropriate to use them, not to show off or try and make splash. Heck, I was asked what languages I speak at a job interview a couple weeks ago-- I didn't go off in Spanish and Korean, I answered in English because the question was put to me in English and the audience was mainly native English speaking. Had I answered in Spanish it would have been equally cringey as what Booker or O'Rourke did here.
