  • I review the 2012 Audi S5 with the Tiptronic automatic transmission. Would you rather have the automatic or manual in this car? Huge thanks to Harrison Auto Sales for allowing me to review this car. This car has already been sold, but they have many other great cars. Their current inventory can be found here: www.autotrader....

      That's because an Italian designed it - Walter DeSilva, ex FIAT and ALFA ROMEO, and then Head of Design @ AUDI from 2002 - 2007. What?? You weren't foolish enough to expect beauty from the Germans were you? lol :)

    Thank you Matt for your wonderful reviews, particularly this one, as it convinced me that one day, this is the very car I would want to have. Here in Malaysia imports are taxed 300%, so buying new is out of the question for most of us. I'm pleased to say after shopping around for a year or so, I found the perfect one for me - a 2009 Deep Sea Blue, White interior S5 V8, with only 35,000 kms on the clock - verified by my independent Audi specialist, where it is now awaiting some small fixes.
    It is a fantastic machine, is luxurious and quiet most of the time, but has a tiger-like roar when you pop it in sport mode. Buttery smooth (that's the quote that sold me). The other thing that sold me is the sound it makes when just taking off moderately from a traffic light - that low, resonating hum from the V8, going through the tiptronic transmission - which as you say, works spectacularly.
    At 54, I'm probably twice the age of most of your viewers - just wanted to say I rate you among the top 3. Keep it going, and much success and respect to you!

      Hi sir! Im from Malaysia too, and im also planning to get an Audi S5 2009 V8. How's the reliability of the car? Heard that the transmission is pretty solid if well taken care of. What about the engine?

    • @MrVaughanW
      @MrVaughanW Před 3 lety +1

      @@nguanjoogoh6822 hi there! Great choice! Just spend the time to find a good one, is my best advice. I found a 2010 and a 2008, and brought them both to my mechanic for a thourough inspection at the same time, side by side. They spent about 4 or 5 hours running diagnostics and visual checks, as well as drive testing. Despite being newer and having the pano roof and Bang and Olufsen sound system, their reccomendation was that the older car was in fact in better condition. There were no oil leaks, pressure within each cylinder bank was the same, and within the expected range. the mileage was very low 35k vs 100k, and that I would have little or no problem with the engine, as long as I changed oil on time. Which I have. Since then I have doubled the mileage and happy to report no problems other than the usual break pads, oil changes, tyres. Im still on original spark plugs.

    • @nguanjoogoh6822
      @nguanjoogoh6822 Před 3 lety

      @@MrVaughanW wow that's amazing! Glad to hear that the 4.2 engines from Audi are reliable! Any electronic issue so far? Im assuming that you're driving in Malaysia right? As in hot climate? Also I have two choices for now, its a 2008 vs 2009 ones, it has similar mileage. Any suggestions?

    • @MrVaughanW
      @MrVaughanW Před 3 lety +1

      @@nguanjoogoh6822 i would say go with the one that is in better condition, and not just from the eye, but take it to a specialist and spend some small money to make sure its not going to be a money pit! If the engine is fine, no leaks, runs smooth and strong, then its ok. But to fix even a small leak they have to spend alot of labor to move things out of the way.
      Electrical issues only minor so far... Lighter had to be rewired to bypass a failed circuit board that controls the lighters. (around 2k to replace.. So just bypass la).
      Rear left break light is partially not functioning, but there is enough working to render it safe and legal. That one also another 2k to fix. So Im living with it for now.
      Apart from that, engine and transmission are superb, change the all oils including the quattro differential oil as a matter of preventive maintenance, and then every 70-100k for transmission and diff oil.
      Oh, some of the hard plastics that were uses in the earlier cars dont stand the test of time in our heat. The entire rear seat backs and armrest brackets in my car are. Crumbling to pieces. You might want to check for that. Tyres also wear out quickly, even with regular rotations..ive had michelin pilot sport 4s and I got 30k kms out of them. But when I brought the car in to my tyre shop they showed me the inner tread on the rears where already worn to the reinforcing metal in the tyre... So plan on forking out 4k every 25k kms for tyres 😂

    • @MrVaughanW
      @MrVaughanW Před 3 lety +1

      Just to add a couple more observations...it could be subjective, but I do feel that the engine performs to its best with premium high octane (97-100) fuel...it just feels smoother and it seems like you get a few extra horsepower in the upper reaches of the revs... Recently ive been doing alot of trips on the empty highways and have had a chance to get up to 225 - 230 kmh for extended periods... And you can feel premium fuel is better.
      The other thing is the gearbox, while its superb in that you essentially have 3 drive modes to choose from - normal, sport, and manual via the paddles (and I use all 3 in different situations) normal is what I use around town at low speeds, and in normal mode, i feel the box should pick 2nd gear, when it picks 3rd, which means you dont get very good pickup from low speed. For example, if you slow down for a smart tag, you do not need to stop.. You can roll through at about 7 kmh and the toll gate will lift. But the box remains in 3rd gear. It should really switch to 2nd gear. So I always end up manually shifting into 2nd gear to take off again. And unlike the dual clutch shiftronic in the later 3 liter supercharged s5's from 2013 onwards, where you can reinstate automatic mode by keeping the up shift paddle on for a few seconds, you cant do that on these older auto boxes. So you end up being in manual mode when you shouldnt really need to. But even with that, I still prefer the auto, simply because its a more robust unit, and it shifts more smoothly most of the time.
      One more annoying thing, is that I cant mount my touch n go toll card anywhere where it doesnt block my view out, or the sound coming out of the dash speaker. So I end up laying it on the dash with a synthetic rubber liner, which doesn't always stick on the dash. I could mount the bracket on top just behind the visor, but then the visor wont fold completely open, which is annoying.
      But hey, at the end of the day, its a V8! So who cares 😉

    Everything is spectacular, this is a really nice car as you said. If I ever had to choose one I'd get this engine. Then it's pretty safe I mean the Airbags, chassis, Traction control and many little particulars which can help you during a daily drive, another thing is the special traction "QUATTRO" which means in my language "4" and that's because the car has All Wheel Drive. That's good because Audi's still testing and improving this new traction in Germany and Italy. Nice review take care you too!

      He already makes videos like that. He call 'em "TRU POV" you can type that and search on his channel, He'll probably make a TRU POV on this car.

    Hello subaru , I am on the verge of buying a Audi S5 2011 , but after seeing the facelift edition , I am slowly changing my opinion, which one you'd think I should go for ? ( i love the steering wheel and the new headlights of the facelift version ) but the sound of it's predecessor .. Best regards .

      there are some shops that can do 2013 facelift conversion, preferably Ill take the 4.2 V8 it has slightly more horsepower, sounds ridiculously good with Armytrix valvetronic exhaust.. however the carbon build up issue might take you down a notch... I'm in the market for 1 as well but it's hard to find one in a meticulous condition with decent mileage

    I just saw one used, for only $13k. Loaded, Blk/Blk with the Bang & Olufsen High-End Audio Pkg. This has to be the best used GT car value on the market. Yes, I know the 335i / M3 are better driver's cars, but that's a true sports sedan, not a GT like this.

    I'm glad they switched to a SC v6, V8 sound is nice, but the tunability is toilet. The SC V6 has the responsiveness of an NA and can be tuned to well over 400whp on pump gas.

    I love my 2010 S5. I have the 6-speed manual. On my daily 30 mile commute which is 10% city, 90% highway, I get 23.5/mpg combined every single day, and that's U.S. gallons doing 75mph. At 55mph, it gets 30+/mpg all day long.
    Not to bad for a powerful V8. I go 300 miles each tank before fueling.
    Went 475 miles each tank before fueling my TDI Jetta though. :)
    Now, put your foot into it for a bit of "spirited driving" and of course those numbers will plummet.
