  • The Jin Dynasty (266-420) of Imperial China, founded by Sima Yan, followed the chaotic Three Kingdoms period. Initially, it unified China by conquering Eastern Wu in 280. However, internal strife soon emerged. The War of the Eight Princes (291-306) weakened the state, and invasions by the Five Barbarians led to further instability. In 311, the capital Luoyang fell to the Xiongnu, and Chang'an was captured in 316, marking the end of the Western Jin.
Sima Rui reestablished the dynasty in the south as the Eastern Jin, with its capital at Jiankang (modern Nanjing). The Eastern Jin struggled with internal power struggles and constant threats from northern states. Despite significant victories, like defeating the Former Qin at the Battle of Fei River in 383, the dynasty could not maintain long-term stability. In 420, General Liu Yu usurped the throne, establishing the Liu Song Dynasty and bringing an end to the Jin Dynasty.
