EFnote are really on to something, but they don't offer much in kit variation. They do the basic dry-no-frills acoustic drums great, but some more modern and processed sounds in addition would help appeal to a bigger segment of the e-buying market.

I'm after the most realistic feel. Of course the sounds in the module are still very important. But as long as I get excelent realistic sounds from it that's enough to me, as long as I can also trigger more electronic sounds from a computer

@@ThomannsDrumBash I really like the idea of asking brands about which kit sound in their opinion is the best. From Roland I've already got big expectations, and after watching some of the EFnote drum kits, I think they are really into it and put a lot of effort too. The surprise comes from Gewa, but I did some research regarding their drums products, the "blind" spots on cymbals are the the biggest issue, but somehow the sound it's good (I blame you for this). It's good to have some nice competition in this area of music. Maybe Yamaha deserves a place in this competition too.

As a 50X owner, I have to say I'm impressed with the EFNote sound. I think you made good choices for the best kits as well... the Progressive kit is one of my favs, although there are some new kit releases on Roland cloud that are pretty good and new VEX releases (haven't tried yet) that tend to be much better than Roland stock kits. Overall, I think the 50x is the first stock kits that Roland got right! I'm glad to see much better jazz kits all around. Thanks for the comparison and great acoustic kit choices..... I've played edrums for over a decade and still annoyed by most electronic/808/laser beam sounding kits.

As a studio and tour guy for established artists, you have to arrive with a Roland TD-50X. I purchased a Gewa few months ago but the dealer didn’t have it in inventory, so I bought a couple of Nord 3p.
Talk about realistic sounds, no samples but real time instruments. Obviously, a module must accompany a 3p, but the kicks and snares are insanely good and in your face real. A Gewa is definitely in my future cart.

Excellent video, excellent drummer! Ps. I agree with you, the TD-50kv2 is the overall best sounding. the EfNote looks cool also, and sounds great, and the GEWA's jazz kit is great! the plus for the Roland kit is the digital snare, hihat, and ride. The GEWA looks a little cheaper built in the cymbals, but that is my opinion. Can't find the price for thEfNote kits. They look very exciting. The GEWA is more expensive than the Roland. Interesting. They have really come along way. That new Yamaha kit sounds pretty great too. I was hoping you'd play more fast single stroke rolls on the snare and toms though to hear if they machine gun. The snares sounded really good at the lower volumes but the toms I couldn't tell if they still have that problem.
I think once the major companies fully commit to putting in Gigabytes of samples (like the best VST's) instead trying to scale the sound with a program, then they'll finally be at the same level.
I know not all edrummers are into having the most realistic sound, but I am. It's why I'll stick with BFD3 triggering Platinum Samples (in my opinion still the greatest VST libraries ever made; up to 250 velocity layers for a single drum articulation) until they get it right. They are getting close.

I cannot answer this question because it depends heavily on my EQ settings. I am using FX Sound to improve the extremely poor onboard sound chip of my laptop.
Can you identifiy what sound/brand has the most real human like feel ?
I mean a real drumset never plays the same sound on the same pad or cymbal.
It depends of the way he strikes them, and they are rarely hit in a same way.
Which e-drum does simulate best this real feel ?

  • @Rhythmic1
    @Rhythmic1 Před 2 lety +1

I really liked your favorite kit sounds and completely agree. But as far as all around authentic acoustic sounds go the Gewa sounded the best to me. At least through my monitors here at home. It was a hard choice because the Roland really stood out and shined in just about every other way. I may have liked it the best overall. I actually have a TD-50KVX with the X-upgrade and love it. One thing I've noticed about Roland's TD-50X and TD-27 modules is that they've fine tuned their sound so well over the years that the drums and cymbals are right in the proper sonic range for maximum effect. The fact they've had the biggest names in drumming helping them fine tune those sounds for the last 30 years really shows. I'm not in anyway disappointed that I bought a TD-50 module over a Pearl Mimic (my other choice at the time). Although, I'd have been very happy with that module as well. If the Gewa had already been released when I purchased my Roland I may have gone for it instead. But the point being that when it comes down to the difference between Rolands modeling approach versus Gewa's and Efnote's multilayered sampling for reproducing authentic acoustic drum sounds the Gewa, and Efnote are going to win everytime. Imo Roland should add a lot more layers of sampling on their next flagship module and make every pad digital. That combined with their prismatic modeling tech and I think they'd have something that was untouchable. I have to say however that I was disappointed in Efnote's cymbal sounds. That was unexpected to me. They look like they make an excellent product. I didn't hate their cymbal sounds but I thought Rolands cymbal sounds were for the most part better. I imagine sampling and reproducing cymbal sounds must be really difficult. It was really noticeable on the digital ride cymbal. I have no idea why that would be unless the samples were better but maybe the advanced triggering of the digital cymbal has an effect on how the cymbal sounds? Maybe just because you can play it with more finesse? I don't know but for sure Gewas sounded amazing. I love Gewa's Paiste samples over Roland's Zildjian and Sabian sounding ones.

All EFnote presets were realistic, and organic. Looks, and sounds: EFnote 5XE at 4100 Euros (not on this video) is a clear choice over the 6800 Euro Roland. I had my 1st (and last) Roland 27 years ago (triangle pads), and they still can't get the realistic acoustic drums sounds. I think the EFnote sounds will be even more realistic with the LogicPro X midi random velocity, after the live midi recording, though you -may?- need another sound pack software such as EZ Drummer etc. EF pricing is better for an acoustic looking drum kit, and you can add a real snare/cymbals to get the full acoustic looks, and -almost- real sounds.

Still though...It's pretty impressive how far they have come. The snare rolls on all of them sounded really good.
And not all VST's sound that great. EZdrummer is a bit limited in my opinion and not quite up to the same level as Superior or BFD3. I think these are starting to be as good as an EZ drummer or some of the lower/mid level VST's.

The EF note cymbals sound the best but the to Tom's are machine gun. The last Tom if the TD50 is also machine gun, which explains why they don't tend to go above fourteen inches

I know I'm going to piss off a lot of Roland haters, but personally, I think Roland and Efnote are tied. I have a Roland TD-07 drumkit and I love most of the sounds but the TD-50 is superior in all ways possible (of course, you can't compare a $400 dollar module to a $2500 one). So I like the Roland stylized sounds. The sounds have a punchy sound and the cymbals are just beautiful. My favourite kit out of the Roland ones shown in this vid is the Acoustic one, the Prog is very close.
Efnote is the more natural sounding. I love the Speedstar (shown in this vid) and the First Note kits. I think the minimalist module design is awesome, plus that Bluetooth sells it for me. I'm slowly, but surely, becoming a big fan of these drum kits, especially the Efnote 3 and 3X for their futuristic stands and compact design.
Gewa's American Vintage kit sounds pretty nice, but it has something I don't like that much and I cannot put my finger on what it is.
Out of all these kits, my favourite is Speedstar from Efnote. I feel like I can play some, well, speed metal! xD
In fact, I am looking at getting the Efnote 3, so I'm not a mindless Roland fanboy (I can't believe that, nowadays, liking something means you're a dumb fanboy).

I my opinion the maschine gun effect only comes down to the playing abilities of the drummer and the settings for the trigger parameters. With these drummodules the player can either play smooth rolls or not. I own a td50x. Adujst the trigger settings to your playing style and tweak the sounds and there will be no maschine gun effect at all. And of course learn to controll your dynamics and your accents and alls that jazz 😂

@@ThomannsDrumBash I haven't inspected the drums but I do have atv 18" ride and atv 10" splash. Both are excellent and on par with roland non- digital cymbals. With that in mind, I would say the drums are probably top shelf as well.

Funny that the Roland TD50 was bashed for having the poorest sounds when it came out and yeah, it wasn't great. The X update was a complete game changer for the module and the Progressive kit is one of my favorite go to kits. I have a MIMIC Pro and it's collecting dust. Yes, it sounds great but it's finicky. I've gigged for years with electronics, Roland just works every time.

Do the Same comparison using the Efnote 7x which cost 5k

Nette Verkaufsschow...

it actually does not matter which kit sounds best out of the box because individual tuning most will make every kit sound the same as long as they all have the same or similar adjustments available ,it won't matter which one of those kits i buy because it will sound the way i want it too after a short period of ownership,we have seen other comparisons on you tube where a $400 peace acoustic kit can sound the same as a $5000 acoustic dw kit its all about the tuning
