The Westinghouse "MT" Chime

  • Today we take a look at a fairly familiar sounding chime. I call this the "MT" chime because that is what the community generally calls it, though that is not officially what this is called. This chime can be found on late Westinghouse and early Schindler installs. Today, I will show you the chime itself and the few settings it has. Normally I wouldn't dedicate an entire video just to a chime, but this one is one of those more unique ones I wanted to share with you!
    A few examples of this chime:
    Low Pitch: • The St. Louis Zoo Elev...
    "Regular" Pitch: • Schindler MT Hydraulic...
    High Pitch: • Interesting Schindler ...

    Really interesting chime, and it's too bad these chimes aren't made like this anymore, since they're so versatile with both volume and pitch adjustment. What would also be really cool is if Schindler continued to use these chimes on all of their HT fixtures, as well as 321A, 330A, 400A, 500A, and 700A elevators, along with the 3300XL, 5500, 6400NA, and 7000 elevators.

  • @EWPA14
    @EWPA14 Před 2 lety

    For the longest time I thought the power fed to the speaker is what made the pitch vary so much. But I guess this is the real answer. Very satisfying.

    • @stlelevators
      @stlelevators  Před 2 lety

      Even if it were that, it would be the slight variation in electronic components that would cause the pitch difference (specifically the resistors), not the power itself. Not all components are exactly the same. The pitch adjustment on this chime is simply changing the resistance with that potentiometer.

    • @EWPA14
      @EWPA14 Před 2 lety

      Yeah that makes more sense actually.

  • @TrainSounds

    Normal pitch will be at F or F#.

  • @NationalElevator
    @NationalElevator Před 8 měsíci

    I wish I would've seen this video earlier. To much everybody's opinion, I actually like this chime. And as other people have stated here, I always thought the pitch had something to do with the voltage put into it, not that it was a variable option. That makes me wonder if the elevator's owner could have the pitch altered at the install as a customization option? Older Dover impulses and the "epco gong" also vary in different pitches. It makes me wonder if those work the same way with a potentiometer to adjust the tone. I also love how everyone agrees that F# is the "standard" pitch lol.
    Anyhow, I would have an unhealthy amount of fun with one of these if I could get my hands on one haha.

    • @stlelevators
      @stlelevators  Před 8 měsíci

      I assumed it would just be the tolerances with resistors and other components that would change the pitch. Generally you wouldn’t alter the voltage going to the chime in the field. The potentiometer is just changing the resistance.

      There are Schindler MT in Sam's Town Hotel & Gambling hall. They are traction and are a bank of 3. It looks like they are getting modernized soon because the rear elevators used to be Schindler MT, we went back this year and they are something else. The chimes on 1st & 2nd floor have been replaced, all other chimes should be original.
