US Army veteran here. Fort Hood was an insane place to be stationed, it's the largest Army base in the US. I can't complain too much because back then I was a part of the problem 100%. When you have that many soldiers in one place with nothing to do, filled with piss and vinegar, shit's about to happen.

Thought fort Bragg was the largest army base ?

Not counting White Sands Missile Range. The largest Army Post by total land area is Fort Bliss by a significant margin. By total personnel assigned it would probably be Fort Liberty (Formerly Fort Bragg) by a nose over Fort Campbell.

@@MrDevtun It seems impossible to get the correct answer here. I found three different articles and all 3 claim a different base is the biggest. Example:
Ft. Bliss has an area of about 1,700 square miles (4,400 km2); it is the largest installation in FORSCOM (United States Army Forces Command) and second-largest in the Army overall (the largest being the adjacent White Sands Missile Range). (The way this is worded implies they arent counting White Sands as part of the 1700 Sq Mi)
Another article from a Veteran Aid org lists the 5 largest US military bases and Bliss isnt even on the list (They have Bragg, Campbell, Hood, Lewis-McChord, Benning)
A 3rd article claimed this: Fort Bragg - Covering over 250 square miles of North Carolina, Fort Bragg is not only the largest base for the U.S. Army, it's the largest military base in the entire world.
All three claim to be talking about area, not personnel. Friggin weird how contradictory all this is.

18:24 Recent polls show that the US and UK have nearly the same level of "patriotism." Both countries register approximately 40% of the population saying they're "extremely proud" of their country.

The only recourse a Soldier has with their chain of command is to submit a report to IG (Inspector General). The IG then refers you back to your chain of command with what you said. Kangaroo BS all around.

There's a reason military personnel don't want orders to Fort Hood or certain bases, it's a known fact certain areas are rough and it's more of problem the bigger the base is usually.

Suppose I can say I'm lucky. Grew up on bases (although they were overseas bases) my whole life. Could be walking around alone at night and I've never felt like I was in any danger. Could take rides from strangers and never felt like I was in danger. It wasn't until I came back to the US that I'd start to be weary of doing anything "dangerous" (Walking alone at night as a young woman, taking rides from strangers, accepting drinks, etc).
Point being, SPECIFIC bases are dangerous. Why? Because there's a reputation that dips into the "no one gives a fuck" territory. And when you get it into your head that you, nor anyone else "gives a fuck" then eventually that's gonna be exactly happens. I grew up on Air Bases, which are certainly different than Army bases, but I've been on Army, Marine, and Navy bases and STILL felt safer than I ever have living in the US.

As someone who served in navy and worked with civilians, army, airforce and national guard, Unfortunately if things can be covered up then it’ll be covered up. Especially if it involves higher ups in the military. People go out, as far as the us military, and do crazy things like the “r” word, stealing, getting into fights, trafficking, etc. they don’t want things to blow up especially in other countries. We strictly told to be ambassadors. People go get in trouble but most of time your division go try to cover up your mistakes or horrible things if they like you.

All US Army soldiers have heard about Ft. Hood.
I would encourage ladies to choose something other than military service, if they can at all help it. Maybe a non-military federal job?
The risk of sexual assault in the military for a woman is uncomfortably high, even outside of Ft. Hood; while sexism and nepotism are virtually a guarantee.
Please don't get me wrong. I am a vet, and I have so many great army buddies with a strong moral outlook. And we do need honest people in military leadership. But in reflecting whether or not I'd want my daughter or wife to join up.... naw, man.
The honest truth is that it's just too risky. It's the military, and I don't think the danger to female soldiers is likely to change anytime soon.

It is true for both inside the base and outside the base. Bases are small cities and sometimes even larger than the towns around them. And not in the best areas. Just like any city there are evil people doing bad things. The Military Judicial system is poor most of the time. The investigations are lazy and try to find the easy exit to a problem, Take the Huge Navy ship in San Diego that caught fire a few years ago. They tried to pin it on a disgruntled sailor. After finding everyone from Admirals on down having been negligent in many areas. He was found not guilty. Ft Hood was also the scene of a mass shooting years ago. During the Desert Storm time frame. A Army Major shout several soldiers that were preparing to leave for the war theater. He was Muslim and was not happy.

It seems to be a tendency, in American culture, to dismiss anything that's criminal and uncomfortable to talk about.
