Funny, how Canada (NATO) was training Ukrainians 7 years before the invasion, but this proxy war against Russia isnt at all something NATO had planned and been steadily working towards for decades... especially since 2014.
And jokes how they vary briefly mention that the ukrainian army (mainly AZOV) had been fighting in the east of ukraine leading up to the invasion, negating the facts that they been bombing and killing civilians in eastern dunbas for the past 8 years leading up to the invasion, which directly went against the minsk accords seize fire agreements... and which NATO and zelenksy have recently came out and stated the minsk agreement was never meant to be kept and was just a bid to buy time to train and arm ukraine for this war.

It seems Ukraine has a reputation for extreme corruption and just recently a dozen or so of their 'officials' were caught with their hands in the pot' - fancy cars - lots of money etc. - maybe that comes from being partly Russian? I do recall that the first thing Russia attacked when entering Ukraine a year ago were the American financed bio-chemical labs they had set up along the border with Russia. We would likely be happy to see them wiped out too if the US set them up in our country! On the home front - the way our government is acting we're headed down the 3rd world road too - intentionally on Trudeau's part!

And if you read any Canadian history, you'd wonder why politicians determined who built the railroads and who got the land next to it. Unfortunately its somewhat baked into the cake. But it's no different than a person who gets a new management job, typically they bring along people they've worked with in the past.
You'd have to be more specific as to what JT has done that is turning us into a 3rd world country. If you are talking about immigration, that's something all parties realize is necessary for the country to grow. We have a labour shortage issue. and again, if you've read any Canadian history, you'd realize there is always folks who are against immigration. That's never stopped it and never will. There is a plan in place to get to a population of 100 million by 2100. And there is only one way to achieve that. If there is something else JT has done to turn us into a 3rd world country I'd be curious to know what that is.

About time. CBC needs to provide a proper series on this issue of training Ukrainian regulars. It is not a secret to those Putin soldiers facing the Canadian trained soldiers, as the Germans found out in when facing Canadian soldiers in past wars. However, the Canadian public is uninformed, allowing space for misinformation, and thus no credit is given to the forward thinking done to stop Putin's imperialism. CBC needs to clearly articulate the threat faced by Canada in the Arctic due to Putin's policies, for example. It is the responsibility of the public broad caster to inform, so do commit to this crucial use of tax payer money.

@J Jayman: while I agree, I also suggest that CBC point out that Canada, along with other NATO countries, including Sweden, have trained Ukrainian soldiers. From 2014 to 2019 it was in Ukraine where over 300 K Ukrainian soldiers were trained by NATO forces. I believe Canada sent over 200 trainers. It was stopped during the pandemic and was restarted in August of 2022 in the Uk. Canadian trainers are now in various European NATO countries doing more training with Ukrainian soldiers.

When will we have a mandatory military service ? It can also be a civic service for men who are not strong enough but at least young people should have to serve their country. It's also the best way to bridge the gap between social class.

Compulsory military service has helped in some countries - and there's certainly lots of young people today who's lives entail electronic devices and little more - wouldn't hurt them to find out there's a bigger world out there! HOWEVER - I could not with clear conscience recommend joining up to any eligible youngster - having seen the way Canada's veterans have been treated by this liberal government - as if they are just 'discards' is shameful. If there were a worthwhile cause - as in defending our own country - okay - but to be sent off to some god-forsaken place to possibly be maimed or killed is not on! Actually, completely revamping the command structure so small units can operate and take the initiative as needed. So, when the 50 km long Putin columns stopped due to an ambush in the front, the small Ukrainian units took apart the larger Russian ones, under the watchful eyes of drones provided by Turkey. These NATO trained forces were being prepared for a longer partisan/guerilla action... however, the centrally planned/controlled Russian army collapsed. One of the Canadians leading this effort of changing the Ukrainian force structure was a woman. The Canadian Defense Minster today is a woman, who is also cleaning up disciplinary issues within Canada's high command, and just before that it was a Sikh officer who was with Canadian forces in Afghanistan. So, you are correct, the inclusive way of training worked, as Ukrainian women are now part of their military... if the data on open source sites are correct, Putin no longer has a viable tank force, losing most of his experienced crews. If these sources are correct, the main supplier of weapons to Ukraine was Putin's own military, who left their armored vehicles and ammo for the Ukrainians.
