    Very interesting comments on this video. Thank you, Adriele Parker, for leaving the comments on this open. I think the recent challenges to DEI, as an institution purporting support for positive systemic change, have been very helpful at illuminating the background and unspoken aims of those supporting and framing DEI. The motte-and-bailey is being understood in the simplest ways. I hope you learn the well-reasoned perspectives of key experts of what you may wittingly or unwittingly support… I think the detractors of DEI run amok have done an excellent job exposing the underbelly of an institution that works tirelessly to appear innocuous. Think; James Lindsay, Bret Weinstein, Peter Boghossian, Jordan Peterson, Nicholas Christakis and countless others. Thanks to DEI overreach, the population is sitting up and taking notice. A story of a man who fought for equality. I found Chief Judge of the Ottoman Empire Mullah Ali (late sixteenth to early seventeenth centuries). A truly exceptional man.
    A native of Ethiopia, he was enslaved at a young age and later presented to the first chief harem eunuch (term 1574-1591) who manumitted him and set him on the path to a judicial career. In his treaties, drawing heavily on Arabophone authors of earlier centuries who addressed this topic, Mullah Ali attempts to counter widespread popular belief in the "curse of Ham", which had been adapted by early Muslim theologians from the story in the Torah book of Genesis. According to the Muslim version of the story, Noah's son Ham mocks Noah for exposing his nakedness during a drunken stupor; on awakening, Noah curses Ham with black skin and declares that his descendants will serve those of his two brothers, Shem and Japheth, as slaves. Mullah Ali takes pains to demonstrate that the skin colors of the world's various peoples were created equal, and that piety and good deeds measure a person's worth.
    He rose to such power that a French ambassador described him as the person who truly ran the empire.

    Why the need for DEI in other words what is the problem we are trying to fix ,and secondly what is the measurement for a sucessfull DEI organization

    • @AdrieleParker
      @AdrieleParker  Před rokem +1

      The problems and solutions vary. For example, it could be a lack of representation in an org that's leading to them creating products that are exclusionary because they lack diverse perspectives. Or it could be a company has hired a diverse group of people, but the systems and process that currently exist were designed by and for a homogenous group. Which is one of the reasons why we need DEI...
      We need DEI because a lot of existing systems and processes were designed by and for majority groups.
      There is a world in which we don't need "DEI" as a standalone. For example a brand new company could, from jump, think about hiring different types of people & taking on different types of clients/customers. They could think about fairness and inclusion as they design and implement their structures, internally and externally. But rarely does that happen.
      DEI should be integrated, but for a lot of orgs, especially existing orgs, it's much easier for them to throw some DEI "initiatives" at existing problems, vs create comprehensive strategies to integrate DEI thinking/design into existing problems.

    • @codymegehee299
      @codymegehee299 Před 3 měsíci +1

      It assumes that because whites were the majority, then they built systems that only favor whites, and thus are over-represented. Their goal is to have fewer white males in spaces, regardless of merit, because they want to be more inclusive.
      They will never protect a white man. They will never advocate for a white man. To them, you are part of a monolith of oppressors that have it all handed to them and get preference in everything you do, and that it's systemic and has to be dismantled. It assumes any grievance you have with this philosophy is due to "losing social status and power", no matter if you were born in the last 20 years and are just now coming into adulthood. Because (some) of your ancestors may have had it better, you will be excluded and rejected to make up for it.
      You're being punished for the sins of your fathers, whether or not they actually committed them, because they view you as an oppressor. The problem. The enemy.

    “There are a number of different DEI variations out there“…
    DEI is reinterpreted in many different ways depending on the person, organization, and context.
    Your description of DEI Sounds good. There certainly are people who are treated unfairly. Burn victims, the ugly, even left-handers are all at a disadvantage.
    But that’s not what I see coming from different organizations. What I see is the promotion of race, sex, and sexual proclivities.
    I see very little psychological or intellectual diversity welcome. In fact, I feel very unwelcome and very hated by the mere fact that I disagreed with the vast majority of DEI agendas.
    Diversity and inclusion is the exact opposite of its words. It’s applied as to identify those matching underrepresented criteria then divide the rest into allies and enemies.
    Equity usually means equality of outcome. That is the exact opposite of being fair to all.
    I want never to be hired on the basis of any underrepresented characteristic any more than I wish to be excluded for such. I want to be hired only for my merits and what I can bring.
    But when I wrote that on LinkedIn, I received only vitriolic replies, including the admonishment no one should hire me ever.

      The fact that DEI is open to interpretation is part of the grift. They will never define consistently what they mean in order to allow for any manipulation or bait and switches. Having multiple meanings of words allows you to do things while simultaneously pretending you are doing something else. Because if they were to consistently define what they mean then:
      1. the benefits of DEI are so miniscule and common sense that nobody would bother wasting money on it
      2. The ugly side of DEI, which outweighs the pretty, would instantly repel people from hiring such positions.

    I get a different sense of equity by how you phrased it - I like the bike analogy. It won’t mean that all the different bikes will allow the same speed of travel, or the same distance traveled - we just need to give each person the bike that allows them to travel optimally as far and fast as they can. Would that be a proper understanding of what you’re getting across?

    • @AdrieleParker
      @AdrieleParker  Před 10 měsíci +1

      When I use the bike analogy, I'm usually leaning more so on the usability of the bike and less so about the speed or distance traveled.
      Let's say that there's a group of 4 of us going on a bike tour. The bike rental store only has one type of bike (they're the same exact frame size) and we're all told to make it work. If someone of a small stature or larger stature attempts to ride the bike, it's likely going to be a challenge for them, if not impossible. And then let's say that one of us uses a wheelchair for mobility. Using that standard bike is absolutely impossible as is. That approach is equality.
      If we want to leverage equity, we would take into consideration the physical needs of each person. A smaller bike frame for the person that needs it, larger bike frame for the person that needs it, and a hand-pedaled bike for the person who uses a wheelchair for mobility. So it's still fair, we're all receiving the same thing-a bike-, just one that works for us individually.
      Hope this helps!

    Equity and Diversity is based off Critical race theory and Social Justice Theory - neither is based in research. They are theories that are based of personal experience and political ideas. The idea of "justice" is rooted in well researched philosophy and linked to internal rationalisation but "Social" justice takes the individual responsibility and replaces it with whatever social/political feelings within society at any given time. True justice is an internal construct. Most companies, universities, schools have OUTSOURCED these racist programmes to companies who are politically motivated or earning money of Equity and Diversity Programmes. The minute you start throwing statistics about in terms of inclusivity, you are being RACIST. You do not have the RIGHT to be included because of your race. You earn your place because or your skills, experience. It is not only BLACK people that should have the right to bring, "their authentic selves" to work! Ask any white person who comes to work and emotionally manipulated, threatened and abusively put through these programmes. Soon these organizations will feel the shame of going down these routes to please the single minded people who believe they are victims and have a right to privilege based off race. What rights do white people today have that Black people don't? In my opinion making a lot of noise and threatening to expose someone as racist to climb the ladder has a deep flaw : self-esteem does not strengthen off the back of . These "personal minded" pursuits propel the individual but let down the group. Just look how self-entitled and victim minded many black people have become since these programmes have taken off. Look how much worse race relations have become. We should look beyond race at the human being. But of course these racist/political programmes suggest that "structural bias" and "unconscious bias" can not be measured but exist because it suits their weak claims not to be challenged. Suddenly, the statistics they throw about are not needed! They reject "racial blindness" as a term because they WANT to focus on race rather than the person/human. This whole POLITICAL movement has entered schools, universities, companies and has been made possible by ABUSIVELY pushing the buttons (white guilt) of people who have NO ADVANTAGES to them today and people who have been difunctionally made to feel responsible for injustices they were not part of. "No white man is a slave owner in America today and no black man is picking cotton". This gravy train is going to derail soon!

I really enjoy paying for the sins of those that came before me, thankful the one life I have to life can be spent homeless and being told how privileged I am while if I were literally any minority or other gender I would qualify for grants and subsidies. Instead, I only had meritocracy scholarships, and no rich parents to help.
      And knowing it's people like you going around and poisoning the well is very reassuring. I'm sure that if you ever saw a board of execs, or really any workplace, that entirely lacked white men, it would be celebrated. You would see a group of all female, all brown, all dressed the same, but that's "diversity", and it's a "good thing"

  • @paulaustinmurphy
    @paulaustinmurphy Před 5 měsíci +1

    "Diversity" - but not diversity of thought........ "Inclusion" - which systematically excludes people with the wrong political views ... ......"Equity" - which is a commitment to (what's seen as a positive variety of) racial essentialism, but which fosters much worse racist attitudes (due to DEI's commitment to race politics and even a mild and non-violent version of a race war)..... Ultimately, DEI is about political power, creating DEI jobs and sustaining them (as this particular video shows), and moral grandstanding.

I personally believe that the two most powerful tools that we possess as humans to combat discrimination, bias, and prejudice are the capacity for deep communication and empathy. While no two persons are the same, and we will never know what is like to live their lives, we can get closer through empathy. Empathy allows you to walk in the shoes of another person, it empowers you to see beyond your own bias and take on a different perspective. This is an important attribute to possess as a marketer because there are market segments that interpret data differently than we might. It is important to be conscious and sensitive to intersections and foster diversity and inclusion with the choices we make and for the consumer.

    Hire the best most qualified person for the job. Period. DEI is either there or it is not. If DEI is your focus then you will MAYBE get the average somewhat qualified candidate for the job.

      That is by the assumption the interviewer treats all the candidates from all backgrounds the same. The truth is, the minorities and women were not given fair treatment at the beginning in a lot of cases. Watch the test of how a person with exactly the same resume content gets a totally different number of calls and requests for interviews when using a minority name vs a common white person's name. This is one of the issues the DEI program trying to solve.

    The correct term I believe is D.I.E. it's where our culture and education system goes to die.
    DEI uses racist ideologies in order to 'fight racism'. You have to use favouritism for some and inequity and biast partiality for others in order to artificially force equal outcomes (wow how 'inclusive').
    People of colour are allowed to be proud and celebrate their culture, ethnicity and race whereas people without colour (also known as white people) are only permitted to express shame for their race, their culture and the achievements of their ancestors.
