Marilyn Zschau singing "Allein.Weh, ganz allein" from Richard Strauss's Elektra at an opera promenade concert of the whole work. Royal Albert Hall, 1993. Conductor, Andrew Davis.
Back in the early 80s, I went to a panel discussion about Tales of Hoffman, which was being done at the LOC, with Ruth Welting, Valerie Masterson, Alfredo Kraus, and Ms. Zschau. I talked to her afterward and she was incredibly nice. She invited me backstage after the performance. The following year, she sang Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk, and remembered me so I got to go backstage again. She was incredibly sweet, without any diva personality. And she was terrific in both operas.
First and foremost THANK YOU FOR THE TRANSLATION!!!!!!! How committed she is to the character to give soooooooo MUCH in a concert setting WAW WAW WAW. This is simply unforgettable, I must admit I am very jealous of the audience that got to experience that supernatural performance by this wonderful Divine Diva, MARILYN ZSCHAU. How Delighted I am that I am able to see and experience this Masterpiece because someone recorded it and now this will live on and show singers in the future a glimpse of what one should try to strive for in their work. Thank you for posting.
It is unfortunate that I only found out about this artist on CZcams. I love her interpretation of Elektra. It's intense, fiery, passionate, sorrowful and terrifying all at the same time. I am sure she is not performing in Opera's anymore. But I wish I could have heard her Elektra live.
OMG!!!!! Just can say that!!!!!! She didn’t even need the orchestra!!!!!!! OMG!!!!!! Just possessed by Elektra…… the BEST ELEKTRA BY FAR!!!!❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I beg your pardon, Madame Zschau! Perhaps I had the details wrong? His name is Richard Cowan. I thought he said Mexico, but perhaps I was mistaken! Do you remember him?
The greatest repect for anyone who is able to sing this role in the first place. And perhaps this performance worked well in the auditorium, could very well be. But on this recording the overintonation is a bit too much for me to enjoy it....
I saw her Elektra in Seattle about 10 years ago. She was simply amazing. Perfect voice for the part. Very emotional sound. Not pretty like Alessandra Marc, but large and very expressive for this type of Strauss role. She is also an attractive woman: large enough to support the voice without being a cow.

What physical power! I mean this HAS to be one incredibly exhausting performance! She makes a great Elektra!

I did not hear her Elektra live, but I did presence her Salome live. Quite exciting and big! It's a big warm voice rather than steely.
Fabolous!
what a wonderful performance! I have only seen MZ as Musetta, but this is wonderful.
:-)
WoW!Great!
VERY STRONG!
One other thing. She totally created the character of Elektra with no set, no costumes, nothing to set the mood. Quite a feat.
I do know that she sang the role in Mexico city, with my voice teacher as Orest. He's the one who sent me this clip :)
oh my god!!!!!
